The Maharashtra elections are a contest between the Mahayuti and the Maha Vikas Aghadi. In the midst of this, AIMIM and Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi, who claim to be the leaders of the Dalit-Muslim or Bahujan community, are looking for their place.

Amidst this web of Hindutva and secular politics, there are some other parties which are trying to establish their foothold in the politics of Maharashtra. In particular, the Dalit-Muslim or Bahujan vote bank is considered decisive in many constituencies. In such a situation, once again in Maharashtra, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), representing the Muslim and Dalit community, are trying their luck.
While the competition between the Mahayuti and Maha Vikas Aghadi is considered to be tough in the entire state, how are the Bahujan and Muslim candidates from these two parties campaigning and what challenges are they facing. AIMIM candidate Advocate Atiq Ahmed Khan told The Wire Hindi that this time the Majlis will get great success.
Atiq Ahmed is contesting from Maharashtra’s high profile seat Mankhurd-Shivajinagar, where he is pitted against Maharashtra’s strong leader Abu Asim Azmi and former minister Nawab Malik. There are a total of 5 Muslim candidates on this seat including Atiq. Atiq Ahmed further says that the education system and drug trade are in full swing in the area, which is his election issue. When asked about the division of Muslim vote bank, Atiq Ahmed replied that the people of the area are upset with the traditional leaders, due to which they are seeing him as an alternative by supporting him.
Atiq Ahmed also told that this is his first election, which is somewhat challenging but he is getting the support of the people, due to which his confidence in victory is getting stronger.
It is known that AIMIM is contesting on 16 seats, in which there are 12 Muslim candidates while on 4 seats tickets have been given to the Dalit community.
On the other hand, Prakash Ambedkar’s Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) is also in this election with 190 candidates. Anand Jadhav, a candidate of VBA, said that his party has fielded a total of 10 Muslim candidates. Anand Jadhav himself is contesting from Chembur assembly seat in Mumbai. Jadhav says that unlike other mainstream parties, he does not have wealth, property, or big cars, etc., but he has the love and support of the people. When asked why Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi does not join any mainstream alliance, he said, ‘In the politics of Maharashtra in the last few years, the public is fooled, leaders take votes and join some other party. VBA respects the vote of the public.’ Jadhav also said that the voter of Vanchit does not vote to see that Vanchit comes to power with his vote, rather it is the priority of our voter that the issues of people coming from Bahujan, Dalit, Muslim community and other backward classes of the society should be properly represented. Jadhav also added that even during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi had put a condition before the ‘India’ alliance that the alliance partners should give in writing that after winning the elections, they will not go with the BJP, which some of the alliance parties had refused. Due to this, the VBA had decided to contest the elections alone.
What do the voters think
Anil Baghat, a resident of Thane district, comes from the Buddhist community and is a staunch supporter of Bahujan politics.
He says that the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi does not back down from its ideology. The Vanchit voter always votes on the basis of morality. We have always opposed divisive politics.
When asked about Dalit-Muslim politics, he said that the Dalit, Bahujan and Muslim community should vote thoughtfully for those leaders who can become their voice in the House. But the Muslim and Dalit vote bank is divided to a great extent, due to which the right candidates who can represent them are not able to reach the Assembly. If the Dalit, Bahujan and Muslim communities vote together, the situation in the state will be different.

महाराष्ट्र चुनाव में महायुति और महा विकास अघाड़ी के बीच मुकाबला है। इन सबके बीच दलित-मुस्लिम या बहुजन समुदाय के नेता होने का दावा करने वाली AIMIM और वंचित बहुजन अघाड़ी अपनी जगह तलाश रही हैं.
मुंबई: महाराष्ट्र चुनाव 2024 अपने अंतिम चरण में पहुंच गया है. 20 नवंबर को वोटिंग होनी है, जबकि 23 नवंबर को नतीजों का दिन होगा. पिछले कुछ सालों में महाराष्ट्र की राजनीति इतनी बदल गई है कि मतदाताओं के लिए यह सुनिश्चित करना मुश्किल हो गया है कि वे जिसे वोट दें, वह पाला न बदल ले. पिछली विधानसभा के लिए चुनी गई पार्टियों के बंटवारे के बाद यह पहला विधानसभा चुनाव होने जा रहा है. जहां एक तरफ बीजेपी के नेतृत्व वाली महायुति चुनावी मैदान में है तो वहीं दूसरी तरफ कांग्रेस के नेतृत्व वाली महा विकास अघाड़ी चुनाव लड़ रही है.
हिंदुत्व और सेक्युलर राजनीति के इस जाल के बीच कुछ और पार्टियां भी हैं जो महाराष्ट्र की राजनीति में अपना पैर जमाने की कोशिश कर रही हैं. खास तौर पर दलित-मुस्लिम या बहुजन वोट बैंक कई सीटों पर निर्णायक माना जाता है. ऐसे में एक बार फिर महाराष्ट्र में मुस्लिम और दलित समुदाय का प्रतिनिधित्व करने वाली ऑल इंडिया मजलिस-ए-इत्तेहादुल मुस्लिमीन (एआईएमआईएम) और वंचित बहुजन अघाड़ी (वीबीए) अपनी किस्मत आजमा रही हैं.
हालांकि पूरे राज्य में महायुति और महा विकास अघाड़ी के बीच मुकाबला कड़ा माना जा रहा है, लेकिन इन दोनों पार्टियों के बहुजन और मुस्लिम उम्मीदवार किस तरह प्रचार कर रहे हैं और उन्हें किन चुनौतियों का सामना करना पड़ रहा है. एआईएमआईएम प्रत्याशी एडवोकेट अतीक अहमद खान ने द वायर हिंदी को बताया कि इस बार मजलिस को बड़ी सफलता मिलेगी.
अतीक अहमद महाराष्ट्र की हाई प्रोफाइल सीट मानखुर्द-शिवाजीनगर से चुनाव लड़ रहे हैं, जहां उनका मुकाबला महाराष्ट्र के कद्दावर नेता अबू आसिम आजमी और पूर्व मंत्री नवाब मलिक से है। इस सीट पर अतीक समेत कुल 5 मुस्लिम उम्मीदवार हैं. अतीक अहमद आगे कहते हैं कि इलाके में शिक्षा व्यवस्था और नशे का कारोबार जोरों पर है, जो उनका चुनावी मुद्दा है. मुस्लिम वोट बैंक के बंटवारे के बारे में पूछे जाने पर अतीक अहमद ने कहा कि इलाके की जनता परंपरागत नेताओं से नाराज है, जिसके चलते वे उन्हें समर्थन देकर एक विकल्प के तौर पर देख रहे हैं.
अतीक अहमद ने यह भी बताया कि यह उनका पहला चुनाव है, जो थोड़ा चुनौतीपूर्ण है लेकिन उन्हें लोगों का समर्थन मिल रहा है, जिससे उनकी जीत का भरोसा मजबूत हो रहा है.
मालूम हो कि एआईएमआईएम 16 सीटों पर चुनाव लड़ रही है, जिसमें 12 मुस्लिम उम्मीदवार हैं जबकि 4 सीटों पर दलित समुदाय को टिकट दिया गया है.
दूसरी ओर, प्रकाश अंबेडकर की वंचित बहुजन अघाड़ी (वीबीए) भी 190 उम्मीदवारों के साथ इस चुनाव में है। वीबीए के उम्मीदवार आनंद जाधव ने कहा कि उनकी पार्टी ने कुल 10 मुस्लिम उम्मीदवार मैदान में उतारे हैं. आनंद जाधव खुद मुंबई की चेंबूर विधानसभा सीट से चुनाव लड़ रहे हैं. जाधव का कहना है कि अन्य मुख्यधारा पार्टियों की तरह उनके पास धन, संपत्ति या बड़ी कारें आदि नहीं हैं, लेकिन उनके पास लोगों का प्यार और समर्थन है। जब उनसे पूछा गया कि वंचित बहुजन अघाड़ी किसी मुख्यधारा के गठबंधन में क्यों नहीं शामिल होती है, तो उन्होंने कहा, 'पिछले कुछ वर्षों में महाराष्ट्र की राजनीति में जनता को बेवकूफ बनाया जाता है, नेता वोट लेते हैं और किसी अन्य पार्टी में शामिल हो जाते हैं। वीबीए जनता के वोट का सम्मान करता है.' मुस्लिम समुदाय और समाज के अन्य पिछड़े वर्गों का उचित प्रतिनिधित्व किया जाना चाहिए। जाधव ने यह भी कहा कि 2024 के लोकसभा चुनाव के दौरान भी वंचित बहुजन अघाड़ी ने 'भारत' गठबंधन के सामने शर्त रखी थी कि गठबंधन के साथी लिखित में दें कि चुनाव जीतने के बाद वे बीजेपी के साथ नहीं जाएंगे, जो कुछ गठबंधन की पार्टियों ने मना कर दिया था. इसके चलते वीबीए ने अकेले चुनाव लड़ने का फैसला किया था.
मतदाता क्या सोचते हैं
ठाणे जिले के रहने वाले अनिल बघाट बौद्ध समुदाय से आते हैं और बहुजन राजनीति के कट्टर समर्थक हैं।
उनका कहना है कि वंचित बहुजन अघाड़ी अपनी विचारधारा से पीछे नहीं हटती है. वंचित मतदाता हमेशा नैतिकता के आधार पर वोट करता है। हमने हमेशा विभाजनकारी राजनीति का विरोध किया है।
कबदलित-मुस्लिम राजनीति के बारे में पूछे जाने पर उन्होंने कहा कि दलित, बहुजन और मुस्लिम समुदाय को सोच-समझकर उन नेताओं को वोट देना चाहिए जो सदन में उनकी आवाज बन सकें. लेकिन मुस्लिम और दलित वोट बैंक काफी हद तक बंटा हुआ है, जिसके कारण उनका प्रतिनिधित्व करने वाले सही उम्मीदवार विधानसभा नहीं पहुंच पाते हैं. अगर दलित, बहुजन और मुस्लिम समुदाय एक साथ वोट करें तो राज्य की स्थिति अलग होगी.

मथुरा में 50 रुपये के लिए दबंगों ने एक दलित युवक को बेरहमी से पीटा. इस दौरान उसे बचाने आई उसकी बहन को भी पीटा गया. मामले की शिकायत लेकर भीम आर्मी के पदाधिकारी एसएसपी कार्यालय पहुंचे।
मथुरा के मगोर्रा थाना क्षेत्र के कस्बे सौंख में दबंगों ने 50 रुपये उधार न देने पर एक दलित युवक की पिटाई कर दी। युवक को बचाने आई युवती को भी दबंगों ने नहीं बख्शा और उसकी भी पिटाई कर दी. भीम आर्मी के पदाधिकारी पीड़ित भाई-बहन को लेकर एसएसपी कार्यालय पहुंचे, लेकिन उनकी मुलाकात नहीं हो सकी।
सौंख निवासी सुंदर रविवार को क्षेत्र के एक वाहन धुलाई सेंटर पर गया था। यहां उन्होंने कर्मचारियों से अपनी बाइक धुलवाने को कहा। बताया जाता है कि सुंदर पर वाशिंग सेंटर के मालिक का 50 रुपये बकाया था. उसने धोने से पहले अपने 50 रुपये मांगे। इस पर दोनों के बीच विवाद हो गया। आरोप है कि लॉन्ड्री सेंटर के मालिक और उसके कर्मचारियों ने दलित युवक की पिटाई कर दी. इसी बीच युवक की बहन वहां पहुंच गई। जब उसने अपने भाई को बचाने की कोशिश की तो उसे भी पीटा गया. जातिसूचक अपशब्दों का भी प्रयोग किया गया। सोमवार को भीम आर्मी की फतेहपुर सीकरी टीम के विधानसभा महासचिव भूपेन्द्र गौतम पीड़िता को लेकर एसएसपी कार्यालय पहुंचे, लेकिन एसएसपी से मुलाकात नहीं हो सकी। उन्होंने कहा कि यदि पीड़िता को न्याय नहीं मिला तो विरोध प्रदर्शन किया जायेगा. इस दौरान भीम आर्मी के सेक्टर अध्यक्ष सत्यपाल सिंह, राजकुमार भारती, जय किशन, नितेश, रिंकू, पिंटो, धीरज, मोनू कर्दम, भोलो, प्रदीप आदि मौजूद रहे।

Published on: Born on July 17, 1932, in Vontibettu, Karnataka, Rajshekar was a towering figure in India’s anti-caste movement. After spending over two decades with The Indian Express, where he honed his journalistic skills, Rajshekar launched Dalit Voice in 1981. The magazine quickly gained prominence as “India’s most widely circulated Dalit journal,” according to Human Rights Watch, and became an essential platform for voicing the concerns and aspirations of marginalized communities.
Rajshekar’s writings in Dalit Voice often sparked nationwide debates, cementing his reputation as a staunch critic of caste-based oppression, Brahmanism, and the Sangh Parivar. His outspoken views came with significant personal costs: in 1986, his passport was confiscated for alleged “anti-Hindu” writings, and he was arrested under the Terrorist and Anti-Disruptive Activities (TADA) Act in Bengaluru. The arrest stemmed from an editorial he had penned in Dalit Voice, which another writer had republished. Over the years, Rajshekar faced charges under the Sedition Act and various sections of the Indian Penal Code for allegedly inciting disaffection between communities.
Despite these challenges, Rajshekar remained unwavering in his commitment to social justice. His prolific writing included numerous books on caste, oppression, and social equity. In 2005, he was honored with the London Institute of South Asia (LISA) Book of the Year Award, and in 2018, he received the Mukundan C. Menon Award, instituted by the National Confederation of Human Rights Organizations (NCHRO).
Even after Dalit Voice ceased publication in 2011, its impact continued to resonate, influencing generations of activists and thinkers. Rajshekar’s contributions extended beyond journalism; he played a pivotal role in shaping the intellectual discourse of the anti-caste movement in India and abroad.
He is survived by his son, Salil Shetty, a global human rights advocate who served as the Secretary General of Amnesty International.

Dalit Professor Receives Notice from Allahabad University Over Remarks on Hindu Deities, Responds Unapologetically
The notice comes after social media uproar over Prof. Harijan’s earlier remarks, which allegedly offended religious sentiments. Despite the warning, the Dalit academic remains steadfast in his views, vowing to continue addressing issues of caste-based discrimination and superstition across all religions.
The Controversy and University’s Action
The controversy began when Prof. Harijan made a social media post criticizing certain aspects of Hindu deities, which he claimed perpetuate caste-based discrimination and superstition. The post quickly went viral, drawing sharp criticism from various groups who accused him of hurting religious sentiments. Although Prof. Harijan later issued a public apology, the uproar did not subside, prompting the university to take action.
In a meeting held on October 3, the Executive Council of Allahabad University, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sangita Srivastava, deliberated on measures to address the incident. The council resolved to implement strict guidelines for university employees, stating that any activity tarnishing the university’s image could lead to denial of gratuity benefits upon retirement. It was also decided that faculty members must seek prior approval from the Vice-Chancellor before posting content related to the university on social media.
On November 14, Registrar Prof. Ashish Khare issued a formal warning to Prof. Harijan. The notice stated that the Executive Council has warned him to refrain from engaging in such activities in the future. Making provocative comments on sensitive issues like religion and culture on public or social media platforms could damage the university’s reputation. If such behavior continues, the university will be compelled to take strict disciplinary action against him as per procedural norms.
Speaking exclusively to The Mooknayak, Prof. Harijan remained unapologetic about his stance.
He said: "If religion and caste promote superstition and discrimination, I will speak out against them, and I will continue to do so. Receiving a notice has not deterred me."
He clarified that his criticism is not limited to Hinduism alone but extends to all religions that he believes perpetuate caste hierarchies. “I speak against all religions that encourage discrimination, whether it is Hinduism, Islam, or Sikhism. My focus is on marginalized communities who remain excluded across all religious frameworks,” he said.
Prof. Harijan also highlighted his academic contributions, mentioning a course he developed titled ‘Religion and Marginal Communities.’ “This segment critically examines how marginalized communities are excluded in religious texts and practices. I use my platform to bring these discussions into the academic sphere,” he added.
Chhattisgarh Bans ‘Moolvasi Bachao Manch’; Sparks Outrage Among Tribal Communities
The ban stems from the organization’s consistent opposition to the establishment of security camps in Maoist-affected areas and alleged incitement of public dissent. The government considers these activities a threat to state security and public peace.
The government’s decision has drawn sharp criticism from tribal organizations and activists. Social workers in Bastar argue that this ban is an attempt to suppress the organization’s activism on issues related to jal, jungle, and zameen (water, forest, and land).
Soni Sori, a prominent tribal activist from Dantewada, condemned the move in an interview with The Mooknayak. She remarked, “The government fears the unification of groups like Moolvasi Bachao Manch, which fight for tribal rights. This ban is a deliberate strategy to silence opposition to its plans of handing over forests to corporate entities.”
Sori further questioned the rationale behind the decision, stating, “What exactly has the Moolvasi Bachao Manch done to be labeled anti-security? The government must clarify the grounds for such a draconian action.”
Charges Against the Organization
According to the government notification, the Moolvasi Bachao Manch has been actively opposing the establishment of security camps in Maoist-affected regions and allegedly provoking local communities against these measures. The government claims that the organization’s activities have disrupted public order and endangered civilian safety. It further accuses the group of interfering with judicial processes and encouraging defiance against legally established institutions.
The one-year ban has been enforced under the Chhattisgarh Special Public Security Act, 2005. Section 3 of this Act grants the state the authority to prohibit organizations whose activities jeopardize security or public order. The ban takes effect from the date of the notification.
Tribal Leaders Decry Suppression of Rights
Tribal leaders from Bastar have denounced the ban as a direct attack on the rights and interests of indigenous communities. They argue that the move is aimed at weakening the community’s fight to protect their natural resources.
A tribal leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, remarked, “The government is suppressing the voices of indigenous people to favor industrialists and large corporations. This ban is part of a broader strategy to prevent tribals from protecting their land and resources.”
