India’s publishing world has ‘hardly any diversity’. Dalit writers are changing that

  • For decades, writers from India’s ‘lowest’ caste say their voices have been erased, softened or controlled by mainstream publishers
  • But their stories are starting to be heard as Dalits open independent publishing houses to strengthen the community’s inclusion in modern Indian literature

Memory, author Yogesh Maitreya writes, is the only thing that cannot be taken from Dalits, India’s lowest Hindu caste born into a lifetime of discrimination.

Caste-society otherwise “has the heinous power to make a Dalit forget who they … are because they are made to hate themselves”, he says in his new memoir, Water in a Broken Pot.

The book is among a small, but growing canon of modern Dalit literature, many published independently by small houses in defiance of a literary establishment dominated by higher-caste Indians, who Dalit authors say have erased, softened or controlled the voices of India’s “lowest” people for decades.

India publishes around 90,000 books a year. Among these, around 150 titles in 2017, less than half a per cent, were by established Dalit authors, according to Frankfurter Buchmesse, which runs one of the world’s largest book markets.

The BJP on January 27 accused the Congress of being “anti-Dalit”, sharing a screenshot of a now-deleted tweet by Indian Overseas Congress chief Sam Pitroda endorsing Sudheendra Kulkarni’s article posted on social media platform X that former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s contributions to the Indian Constitution were more than that of B.R. Ambedkar’s.

Mr. Kulkarni, a former close aide of BJP veteran L.K. Advani, has in the article said that B.R. Ambedkar was not the maker of India’s Constitution and the contribution of late Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was far greater in its framing than that of Ambedkar.

Female Sanitation Worker Assaulted in Jabalpur, Colleagues Gherao Police Station

POSTED ON JANUARY 29, 2024

In a powerful display of dissent, the angered sanitation workers ceased their work and initiated a strike. Police arrested the two accused.

Ankit Pachauri

Jabalpur- In a shocking incident in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, a female cleaner fell victim to assault by a shop owner. The infuriated sanitation workers took swift action, surrounding the Ranjhi police station on Thursday, demanding justice. Responding promptly, the police registered a case and apprehended the accused.

The victim, a temporary cleaning worker employed by the Municipal Corporation, was performing her morning duties in the Bada Patthar area. The operator of Sai Traders allegedly called her into the shop, where he, along with his son, subjected her to physical assault. The situation escalated when the supervisor attempted to intervene and was also subjected to violence.

Upon learning about the assault on the female sweeper, fellow sanitation workers swiftly gathered at the police station to express their outrage. Demanding justice, they protested vehemently and urged the immediate registration of a First Information Report (FIR). Determined to stand in solidarity, the employees declared their refusal to resume cleaning duties until decisive action was taken against the accused.

In a powerful display of dissent, the angered sanitation workers ceased their work and initiated a strike. They emphasized that unless the police took concrete measures against the perpetrator who assaulted their colleague, the entire sanitation system would remain paralyzed.

They received assurances and had the complaint officially registered. However, frustrations escalated when no visible actions were taken in response. In protest, employees from all wards of the Ranjhi zone converged at the police station on Thursday. The standstill of sanitation workers led to a halt in both cleaning and garbage collection across all wards.

Expressing disappointment, the workers emphasized that the police had failed to make an arrest even 24 hours after their initial complaint. Their collective demand remained clear: the accused must be apprehended without delay.

Jabalpur Superintendent of Police, Aditya Pratap Singh, acknowledged the severity of the incident in a conversation with The Mooknayak. He confirmed that a case of assault and atrocity committed against a female cleaning worker had been registered against the shop operator based on the victim’s complaint. The two accused have been arrested, the cop said.

Rajasthan: FIR Against Dalit Teacher for Elevating Savitri over Saraswati, as ‘Goddess of Education’

POSTED ON JANUARY 29, 2024

The controversy deepened when the teacher accused villagers of harassment and caste-based discrimination. The teacher asserted that during the Republic Day function, individuals from the village obstructed her official duties, harassed her for not keeping Saraswati image and used caste indicators, threatening her job security.

Geetha Sunil Pillai, Abdul Mahir

Bara- In a defiant stand against conventional norms, Hemlata Bairwa, a government school teacher, has ignited a social media storm with her bold assertion that “Savitri Bhai Phule, and not Saraswati, is the Goddess of education.” This resolute stand has thrust her into the spotlight after she courageously faced dissent from a group of men at Government School Lakdai in Nahargarh, Rajasthan, during a Republic Day celebration on January 26.

Bairwa’s perspective has garnered widespread attention, prompting vocal support from numerous members of the Dalit community. Simultaneously, it has triggered a backlash from right-wing factions, who perceive it as an affront to their religious sentiments, leading to fervent calls for legal action. The incident has culminated in the filing of cross FIRs by both parties, and local police are now earnestly investigating the matter.

The clash of perspectives in this seemingly ordinary event has morphed into a contentious issue, emblematic of the delicate balance between freedom of expression and the protection of religious sentiments in contemporary India.

On Republic Day, Hemlata Bairwa, the teacher at the Government Higher Primary School in Lakdai was officially organising a cultural program by the students. She had put up pictures of Baba Saheb BR Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi on the stage. Two teachers reportedly forced her to keep Goddess Saraswati’s picture on the table. Hemlata refused to allow the placement of Saraswati’s image on the stage alongside those of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi. The teachers sided up with some villagers who exerted pressure on the teacher. ” I asked them what is the contribution of Saraswati in the field of education? It is Savitri Bai Phule who is the Goddess of education for children and no one else. Moreover, it was the Republic day celebration and not any religious event. It is against the constitutional principles to observe any religious event in a government setup” Bairwa said to The Mooknayak.

The incident escalated into a verbal altercation, leading to an inquiry by the Education Department and local police. The ensuing uproar prompted the registration of three cases, with complaints lodged by the teacher, a villager, and other members of the school staff.

The controversy deepened when the teacher, belonging to the Scheduled Caste category, accused villagers of harassment and caste-based discrimination. The teacher asserted that during the Republic Day function, individuals from the village obstructed her official duties, harassed her for not keeping Saraswati image and used caste indicators, threatening her job security. The FIR further claims a violation of the teacher’s fundamental right to freedom of expression and the desecration of women’s honour.

In response, the accused villagers, including Hansraj Nagar, Phoolsingh Gurjar, Radheshyam Nagar, and Chandra Gurjar, filed a counter-complaint. They alleged that the teacher, Hemlata Bairwa, had removed the Saraswati picture from the program and made derogatory remarks, causing hurt sentiments. The villagers also accused the teacher’s family members of threatening people of a particular religion.

Video footage of the confrontation has surfaced, showcasing the intensity of the argument between the villagers and the teacher.

Shahbad’s Deputy Superintendent of Police, Hemant Gautam, leading the investigation into the incident, provided insight into the ongoing legal proceedings. Speaking to The Mooknayak, he disclosed that reciprocal First Information Reports (FIRs) had been lodged — one against the female teacher and another against the villagers involved. As the investigative process unfolds, Gautam emphasized that only after a thorough examination of the evidence would culpability be established, shedding light on the intricate details of the confrontation.

Bhim Army Baran District President Piyush Verma weighed in on the matter, condemning the pressure on the Dalit female teacher to place Saraswati image during the Republic Day celebrations in a government school. The Bhim Army asserts that Republic Day celebrations are meant to commemorate the Constitution’s implementation, not to favour any particular religion. They have declared their opposition to the FIR against the female teacher, threatening protests if justice is not served.

In response to Mooknayak’s discussions on the matter, most academicians opted for a neutral standpoint. They acknowledged that in the Indian mindset, it is deeply ingrained that Laxmi is the goddess of wealth, and Saraswati is revered as the goddess of knowledge. However, academics also pointed out the crucial fact that these designations are based on fictional stories with no concrete evidence.

Adding another layer to the discussion, the academicians highlighted the significance of Savitribai Phule, who is held in high regard for her sacrifices and efforts towards girls’ education. In contrast to mythical goddesses, Savitribai Phule’s contributions are grounded in historical records, making her an inspiring figure for her tangible impact on the advancement of education, particularly for girls. The nuanced perspective offered by academicians emphasise the intersection of cultural beliefs, mythology, and historical realities in the ongoing discourse surrounding the controversy.

As the legal proceedings continue and tensions persist, the case has become a focal point for advocates of constitutional rights, sparking a wider debate on the intersection of religious practices and the responsibilities of public servants within government institutions. The unfolding narrative encapsulates the delicate balance between individual freedoms and the adherence to constitutional principles in the vibrant tapestry of India’s diverse social landscape.

Adivasi Ekta Parishad comes to the rescue of Goa STs

Vows to take up issue on political reservation with Centre, President and Governor

Team Herald

MARGAO: In a major boost to Mission Political Reservation for Scheduled Tribes of Goa (MPRSTG), the national organisation, Adivasi Ekta Parishad, has extended their support to MPRSTG and will take up Goa group’s demands with the Central government, President of India and the Governor of Goa.

On Sunday, a meeting was held with the senior leaders of the Parishad including its national Secretary Ashok Chaudhary with senior leaders of MPRSTG including its President Adv Joao Fernandes.

After Fernandes submitted a memorandum to Chaudhary, the Parishad assured MPRSTG that they would raise this issue with the Central and State government and question why the Scheduled Tribes (STs) of Goa are still being denied reservation, which is their constitutional right. MPRSTG also reiterated that they are going ahead with the protest march to the Goa Assembly on February 5 to protest the State government’s failure to stick to assurances given during the previous assembly session.

“The entire ST community was very hopeful to get the above constitutional right when Goa Assembly on July 21, 2023 unanimously passed a private members resolution moved by Ganesh Gaonkar, a ST MLA to recommend and urge the Central Government to reserve seats for STs in the Legislative Assembly,” Fernandes recalled.

Questioning the delay, Fernandes recalled that the Parliamentary Committee on the Welfare of Scheduled Caste & STs headed by Professor Kirit Premjibhai Solanki during their visit to Goa on January 19, 2023 had given directions to Goa Government to submit proposal to constitute Delimitation Commission to give Political reservation to STs for the purpose of delimitation of Assembly and parliamentary constituencies in state of Goa.
