Sant Ravidas and the Dynamics of Identity and Worship in India

POSTED ON FEBRUARY 26, 2024

The 647th birth anniversary of Sant Shiromani Ravidas was commemorated nationwide on February 24. Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked the occasion by unveiling a statue in Varanasi, the birthplace of the revered saint. Additionally, he laid the foundation stone for the Ravidas Museum during the ceremonial event held on Friday.

Pratikshit Singh

Lucknow- Exploring the multifaceted legacy of Sant Ravidas, a revered saint in India, unveils a complex tapestry of identity, worship, and political appropriation. Despite being predominantly associated with his Dalit identity, Sant Ravidas’s influence transcends caste boundaries, with his teachings resonating across diverse social strata.

However, his elevation by right-wing groups like the RSS into a broader narrative of Hinduism adds layers of complexity to his revered status, reflecting the intricate interplay between spirituality, social hierarchy, and political agendas in contemporary India.

Sant Ravidas is one of the most revered saints, born in the 13th century in a Chamar (a Dalit sub-caste primarily associated with leatherwork) at a time when the caste system was quite rigid.

However, Sant Ravidas managed to scale the heights of spirituality through his teachings, which espoused equality and simplicity and envisaged the concept of Begumpura, a town free from discrimination and suffering. Today,

Sant Ravidas is revered all over the world. Outside India, Sant Ravidas has gurudwaras in the U.S., Canada, Australia, U.K., Italy, and other European countries.

Ravidas Jayanti Celebrated Nationwide

On Saturday, Ravidas Jayanti celebrations were held all over the country. In Lucknow, a procession was taken out from Jhandewalan Park in Aminabad to the Ravidas Mandir at Bada Chandganj, Aliganj, which is also celebrating its 100th foundation year in 2024. Another significant program was organized at Sant Ravidas Math in Bara Birwa on Kanpur Road in Lucknow.

IPS officer B.P. Ashok, who spoke at the event, urged the people to follow the teachings of Sant Ravidas, which are relevant today. He said that Sant Shiromani Ravidas promoted the spirit of inquiry, which was the basis of revolution in the western world. The event had an impressive gathering, and people paid tributes to Sant Ravidas. Ram Khilawan, the president of the Sant Ravidas Sewa Samiti, which organized the event, said, “Guru Ravidas showed us the right path.”

Retired IPS officer Harish Kumar said, “Sant Ravidas did not surrender to the Islamic rulers who were pressurizing him to convert to Islam.” Vipin Kumar Gautam, who came from Hardoi to attend the event, said, “We need to take the message of Sant Ravidas to every household.”

Sant Ravidas as the Springboard of Subaltern Hinduism

In an attempt to woo the Dalit community, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a statue in Varanasi, the birthplace of the seer, on Friday and also laid the foundation of the Ravidas Museum. Last year, the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh allocated 12 acres of land for a temple and meditation center dedicated to the medieval-era saint in Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh.

In India, Sant Ravidas has been largely associated with his Dalit identity, and the upper castes rarely worship him at an individual level. However, right-wing groups like the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) have adeptly tapped into the popularity of Sant Ravidas among the members of the Scheduled Castes. Sant Ravidas fits into the agenda of RSS, as not only does he represent the Dalit cultural identity but also fulfills the agenda of subaltern Hinduism, bereft of Brahminical supremacy.

The saint, whose dohas like “Brahmin mat pujiye jo hove gudhina, pujiye Charan chandal ke jo howe gud Praveen” (don’t worship a Brahmin who is devoid of virtues, rather worship a lower-caste chandal, who is virtuous), are in crosshairs with the Vedic Hinduism supported by RSS, but the latter has very skillfully woven the saint into its larger narrative of Hinduism.

    WEST BENGAL

West Bengal: Women Victimized Amidst Power Struggle and Political Blame Games in Sandeshkhali Violence!

    POSTED ON FEBRUARY 26, 2024

Women allege that Trinamool Congress members conducted door-to-door surveys in the village. If a woman or girl was deemed attractive, they were taken to the party office and kept there for several nights, where they were sexually exploited.

    Saumya Raj

Sandeshkhali, in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, has been in the news for quite some time due to ongoing political turmoil between the TMC and the BJP. Accusations of sexual harassment and land grabbing have been levied against TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan and his associates, Shibu Prasad Hazra and Uttam Sardar, leading to massive protests that have lasted for nearly 15 days.

The protests, fueled by allegations of sexual exploitation and forced land acquisition, have garnered national attention. Local women have come forward with accusations against Shahjahan and his associates, exacerbating tensions in the area.

Recently, renewed protests erupted in various parts of Sandeshkhali, with angry locals setting fire to properties belonging to TMC leaders accused of misconduct. The unrest has persisted for nearly two weeks, underscoring deep-seated grievances within the community.

During the protests, demonstrators armed with sticks set fire to structures near a fishing yard in the Belmajur area, targeting properties associated with Shahjahan and his brother, Siraj. The escalation of violence reflects the frustration of locals who feel marginalized and ignored by the authorities.

The situation in Sandeshkhali escalated on January 5 when an Enforcement Directorate (ED) team conducting a raid at Shahjahan’s residence was attacked by a mob allegedly affiliated with the TMC. This incident further fueled public outrage, particularly among women, who have been protesting vigorously since February 7.

The authorities have taken steps to restore peace in the area, with reports indicating the arrest of 18 individuals, including Shibu Prasad Hazra. However, Shahjahan, the primary accused, remains at large, adding to the tension and uncertainty.

The political dimension of the conflict has added complexity to the situation, with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee blaming the BJP and the RSS for the unrest. In response, the BJP and Congress have accused the TMC of shielding those implicated in the alleged crimes.

According to reports, TMC leader Shahjahan is accused of several crimes ranging from money laundering to harassment. According to media reports, speaking about the Sandeshkhali protests, BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain said that there is no government in West Bengal and alleged that BJP workers are being attacked in the area.

Allegations of Sexual Harassment and Exploitation: Women Speak Out

The protesting women have leveled serious accusations against TMC leader Shahjahan Shaikh and his supporters, alleging instances of sexual harassment. They claim that individuals associated with Shahjahan Sheikh would forcibly take them away at night and release them in the morning after subjecting them to laborious tasks.

Women were coerced into attending late-night meetings under the guise of party gatherings, where they were made to cook and dine with the perpetrators. Despite lodging complaints with the police, the victims claim to have received no assistance. In fear of reprisal, none of the women were willing to speak on camera.

One woman, speaking to The Quint, revealed the longstanding pattern of sexua

l and socio-economic exploitation endured by the women of Sandeshkhali. She recounted instances where they were kept at the party office for hours, pleading to be allowed to return home to their families, only to be disregarded by their captors.

Women also allege that Trinamool Congress members conducted door-to-door surveys in the village. If a woman or girl was deemed attractive, they were taken to the party office and kept there for several nights, where they were sexually exploited. These women, making the accusations, assert that the fear instilled by Sheikh Shahjahan in the area prevented anyone from speaking out. Additionally, they have implicated TMC leaders Uttam Sardar and Shibu Hazra, who are considered close associates of Sheikh Shahjahan.

However, Shibu Hazra, an ally of Sheikh Shahjahan, has denied all allegations of sexual harassment, claiming that he is being framed as part of a conspiracy.

According to Rekha Sharma, Chairperson of the National Commission for Women, the commission has received at least 18 complaints from various women in the area as of Monday, February 19, as reported by The Quint.

Among the accusations, women have also alleged rape, land grabbing, and non-payment of dues against the accused TMC leaders. They claim that out of the 18 complaints received, two are related to rape.

Amidst Political Turmoil: Allegations and Counter-Allegations

BJP State President Sukanta Majumdar penned a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on February 9, highlighting the atrocities allegedly committed by Sheikh Shahjahan, Shibu Hazra, Uttam Sardar, and their associates. He emphasized that these actions have instilled fear and insecurity among the residents of Sandeshkhali, depriving them of their basic rights to security and dignity.

Following this, on February 10, BJP members marched from the Assembly to Raj Bhavan, urging intervention from the Governor. Notable leaders, including Shubhendu Adhikari, participated in this demonstration.

Meanwhile, in West Bengal, BJP leader and Nandigram MLA Suvendu Adhikari addressed the Sandeshkhali incident on February 11, stating, “Sheikh Shahjahan and his gang have unleashed a ‘reign of terror’, repeatedly violating the dignity and modesty of women from SC and ST communities.”

Legal Action Taken by Calcutta HC and NHRC

Calcutta High Court judge Justice Apoorva Sinha Ray took suo motu cognizance of the incident on February 13, directing the Mamata government to submit a report by February 20. Subsequently, on February 14, the High Court revoked Section 144 in Sandeshkhali and appointed a lawyer as amicus curiae. The court issued notices to the state government, police, and district administration, questioning the delay in arresting Sheikh Shahjahan. The case involves allegations of sexual harassment and forcible land occupation.

Additionally, a video surfaced wherein a woman alleged that housewives were compelled to stay with TMC workers and leaders. However, a two-judge Supreme Court bench headed by Justice BV Nagarathna dismissed a plea seeking a court-monitored probe into the violence, stating that it cannot be equated with the situation in Manipur.

The National Human Rights Commission also intervened, sending a notice to the West Bengal police chief over the unlawful detention of a journalist covering the Sandeshkhali issue.

The Commission views these allegations as serious violations of human rights and press freedom. A report has been sought from the West Bengal Director General of Police within two weeks, with an additional inquiry by its DIG (Investigation) to ascertain the facts.

During her visit to Sandeshkhali, the chairperson of the National Commission for Women received 18 complaints, including two cases of rape.

    Political Rhetoric Surrounding Sandeshkhali Incident

Union Minister Smriti Irani delivered a scathing critique of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during a press conference addressing the Sandeshkhali incident. Irani accused Banerjee of presiding over the ‘genocide of Hindus’ and permitting her party workers to perpetrate sexual violence against women.

Meanwhile, addressing the Sandeshkhali incident in the Assembly, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated, “We have taken action on the entire matter. BJP is spoiling the atmosphere by calling people from outside. BJP people are making statements on this matter wearing masks. Sandeshkhali has become a bunker of RSS. There have been riots here before as well, I have never allowed injustice to happen to anyone nor will I allow it to happen.”

Mamata Banerjee confirmed that 17 individuals have been arrested in connection with the Sandeshkhali violence case. Additionally, she announced the deployment of a women police team in Sandeshkhali to visit every household and address women’s complaints directly.

Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose visited Sandeshkhali to assess the situation following the women’s protests. Bose described the incident as horrifying and shocking.

A Legacy of Political Violence in Bengal

Over the years, West Bengal has been plagued by political violence, with the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) documenting an average of 20 political killings annually from 1999 to 2016.

Particularly alarming is the surge in violence following the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, with at least 47 political killings of workers affiliated with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the majority of which occurred in South Bengal.

Moreover, NCRB data reveals a concerning trend in missing women cases, with West Bengal ranking as the second-largest state in terms of reported missing women. Despite being less populous than Maharashtra where 33,964 women were reported missing in 2018,, West Bengal reported 31,299 missing women cases in the same year, disproportionately high for its population size. Notably, Kolkata, Nadia, Barasat, Barrackpur, and Murshidabad recorded the highest number of missing women cases, highlighting the severity of the issue.

Sandeshkhali, a region in West Bengal, reflects the state’s diverse demographic composition. Scheduled Castes (SC) constitute 30.9 percent of the population, while Scheduled Tribes (ST) make up 25.9 percent. Additionally, Hindus account for 69.19 percent, and Muslims comprise 30.42 percent of the total population in Sandeshkhali. Despite its demographic diversity, Sandeshkhali, like many other areas in West Bengal, has been marred by a history of political violence, complicating the state’s political landscape for decades.

The state’s political history is characterized by a cycle of power shifts between different parties. The Indian National Congress (INC) dominated the political scene for over two decades post-independence, followed by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), which held power for almost three decades. Currently, the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) is in power. However, regardless of the ruling party, the culture of violent clashes between political workers, especially in rural areas, has persisted, intensifying in recent years.

The proliferation of political violence has made it a central issue in public discourse and policy debates in India. The contentious nature of politics in West Bengal has often led to violent confrontations, posing significant challenges to governance and stability.

In this ongoing battle for control and political influence, the mistreatment of women is utterly unacceptable and deserves strong condemnation.

Dalit Groom’s Wedding Procession Disrupted in Rajasthan, Prompts Police Intervention

    POSTED ON FEBRUARY 26, 2024

The incident in Rajasthan bears resemblance to a similar occurrence in Gujarat’s Mansa area, where a Dalit groom faced assault and caste-related abuse while riding a mare during his wedding procession.

    Satya Prakash Bharti

Khairtal-Tijara: In Rajasthan, a Dalit youth’s wedding procession was disrupted in the Mundawar area of Khairthal-Tijara district, approximately 160 km from the capital, due to objections to horse riding.

The incident, reminiscent of a previous case in Gujarat, cast a shadow over the joyous occasion, prompting intervention from authorities to ensure the completion of the marriage ceremony.

The incident unfolded in Lamchapur village of Mundawar tehsil, where Rahul, the groom, was preparing for his wedding procession on the evening of February 24th.

However, influential individuals from the village intervened, preventing Rahul from mounting the mare designated for his ride. The ensuing turmoil prompted the involvement of Bhim Army workers and eventually the police, allowing Rahul to carry out the ritual of horse riding.

Moreover, as the procession approached a temple, the doors were locked, obstructing the scheduled rituals. Subsequently, police intervention was sought again, leading to the unlocking of the temple and the provision of security for the wedding procession.

The groom, Rahul, told The Mooknayak, “On the evening of February 24th, we were ready to go to the Kotputli area with the Baraat (wedding procession). During this time, some influential people from the village arrived. The wedding preparations were complete, and the procession was about to leave. As i was about to mount on the mare, I was stopped from doing so. There was a commotion at the spot for a long time. Our family members informed the Bhim Army members who called the police to the scene. After that, I could complete the rituals”.

Tehsildar Madan Singh confirmed receiving a complaint regarding the Dalit youth’s exclusion from riding the mare. In response, the administration, accompanied by law enforcement, facilitated Rahul’s participation in the traditional rituals, ensuring the completion of the wedding procession.

The incident in Rajasthan bears resemblance to a similar occurrence in Gujarat’s Mansa area, where a Dalit groom faced assault and caste-related abuse while riding a mare during his wedding procession. Prompt police action was taken in both cases to provide security and address the grievances of the affected parties.

Furthermore, in protest against the Gujarat incident, Dalit leader Kalpesh Parmar demonstrated by riding a mare to the SP office and submitting a memorandum, highlighting the need to address caste-related discrimination and ensure the dignity and rights of marginalized communities.

FairPoint: BJP strides ahead with Dalits/OBCs/tribals; Oppn falters

    POSTED ON FEBRUARY 26, 2024

In a milestone decade for the BJP since 2014, the party has transformed its image from an upper-caste party to one that is inclusive and representative of all sections of society. The BJP’s focus on welfare schemes, recognition of historical figures, and strategic initiatives have endeared them to the marginalized sections of society, leading to a rise in their vote percentage and electoral success across the country.

The BJP’s agenda of inclusivity is evident in their efforts to honor forgotten leaders like Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, Karpoori Thakur, Chaudhary Charan Singh, L.K. Advani, and M.S. Swaminathan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visits to places connected to revered figures like Sant Ravi Das and the renaming of Ayodhya airport after Maharishi Valmiki highlight the party’s commitment to reaching out to all sections of society.

The BJP’s success in elections, from panchayats to the Lok Sabha, has been attributed to their strategy of appealing to marginalized communities. Despite efforts by detractors to stoke caste feelings, the BJP has managed to garner support from OBCs, SCs, and STs, as seen in their victories in key states like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh.

Prime Minister Modi’s focus on upliftment and development of SCs, STs, and OBCs has resonated with voters, leading to an increase in support for the BJP among these sections. The party’s cross-caste coalition and nation-first ideology have gained momentum, with a significant rise in support from Dalits and OBCs in recent elections.

Through a range of pro-poor schemes, the Modi government has uplifted millions out of poverty, with a large portion of beneficiaries coming from marginalized communities. PM Modi’s personal background as an OBC has also helped in expanding the BJP’s appeal among various castes and communities, resonating with a growing number of individuals who seek to transcend traditional divides.

While the opposition, particularly Rahul Gandhi, continues to focus on caste politics, the BJP’s success among diverse sections of society highlights a shift towards a more inclusive and forward-thinking approach. As the BJP consolidates its support base among marginalized communities, the party’s vision for a united and prosperous India continues to gain favor among the masses.

Wife’s brother, vengeful gang join arms, murder Dalit man

    POSTED ON FEBRUARY 26, 2024

G Pravin married the girl from an OBC community despite objections from her family The youth had done a self-respect marriage with the woman from an OBC community only four months ago.

    Srikkanth Dhasarathy

CHENNAI: In yet another chilling case of honour killing, this time in the capital itself, a 22-year-old Dalit man was hacked to death by his wife’s elder brother on Saturday night at Pallikaranai. The youth had done a self-respect marriage with the woman from an OBC community only four months ago.

The police suspect that the elder brother joined hands with another gang which was waiting to exact revenge on the victim for a murder in 2022.

The deceased was identified as G Pravin alias Ashiq. On October 19 last year, he married D Sharmila (20) of Jalladanpet near Medavakkam against the wishes of her family. After remaining in hiding for a couple of months, the couple started living in Pravin’s house in Ambedkar Street, Pallikaranai. Pravin, a school dropout, assisted his father, V Gopi, a bike mechanic, while Sharmila continued her college studies.

“There were threats from the woman’s family even on the day of their wedding. Once they came to the house and we have now heard that her father and brother tried to meet Sharmila at her college last week,” said Kaviarasu, Pravin’s neighbour.

On Saturday night, Pravin left home around 8.30 pm to buy fried rice for the family.

“One of his friends came home crying. I could not understand what was happening and tried calling him. But, his phone was not reachable. Then a policeman came home and took all the details about my husband. Only then it was revealed to me that he was murdered,” Sharmila told media persons while waiting for the mortal remains of her husband to reach home.

“They (policemen) said my brother was one of the accused in the murder. Why? I am living a happy life. What is his problem with how I live,” Sharmila said. The two of them were in a relationship for seven years and Sharmila left home when her family started to look for alliances for her.

Victim’s wife points to caste as main reason

“My family gave a police complaint. I went to the station and gave in writing that I came of my own volition. There also my brothers threatened us. The threats continued, but I assumed he was doing it to vent out and things would be normal. I did not expect him to act on his threats,” Sharmila said. When asked why the family opposed their relationship, Sharmila said, “Caste”.

Sharmila’s brother, D Dinesh (23), joined hands with a gang that was waiting to exact revenge on Pravin in connection with a 2022 murder. The others arrested were identified as R Stephen Kumar (24), B Jothi Lingam (25), S Vishnu Raj (25) and N Sriram (18). Pravin was named as an accused in the murder of Bright Allwyn (22).

According to police records, Allwyn and another youth, Sasikumar, had an issue over Allwyn trying to boss over students of his college. Pravin who was known to both of them had asked Allwyn to come for a meeting and when the meet happened, Allwyn was hacked to death.

“The gang in fact used the same modus operandi in executing the murder,” said a senior police officer with Tambaram city police. “Pravin got a call from a youth, Sriram, and when he went to meet him, the other accused, who were Allwyn’s friends, murdered Pravin. Like Allwyn’s murder, Pravin, too, was hacked on the head and neck,” said a police officer.

Pallikaranai Police registered a case under section 302 (murder) of IPC and section 3 (2) (v) of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The accused were produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody
