Chandan Verma is currently the prime suspect accused of killing the Dalit family, after it was found that a complaint had been filed against him earlier under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 19 by Ram Gopal's daughter-in law Poonam.

A preliminary probe by the police revealed that Poonam had lodged a complaint against Chandan Verma for harassing her. The police are yet to determine if the two cases are linked however, Poonam had stated in her complaint, “If anything happens to me or my family, Verma should be held responsible for it,” said Amethi superintendent of police Anoop Kumar Singh on Thursday.

A three-member team of doctors conducted the post mortem of the bodies in Amethi under videography and five police teams have been deployed to investigate the case.

Bereaved father,Ram Gopal has taken all four bodies to his native village, Sudamapur, in Rae Bareli's Unchaer.

Ram Gopal spoke to reporters outside the mortuary on Friday and said, “The way my son has gone, they (killers) should go the same way.”

He also expressed his concerns over being the sole breadwinner of the household, “With my son gone, I am left with no one to take care of the house. I am over 60 years old and I have one more son, who lives separately. If he can get a job, it would be good.”

He also claimed that he did not know who Chandan Verma was or what his caste was, however he did remember Poonam lodging a complaint against him.

“Had any action been taken, this would not have happened today,” Ram Gopal said.

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath paid his condolences in a post on and said, “The incident that happened in Amethi district today is highly condemnable and unforgivable. The Uttar Pradesh government stands with the victim's family in this hour of grief. The culprits of this incident will not be spared at any cost, strictest legal action will be taken against them.”

The Fight Against Discrimination by the First Irular Woman Panchayat President in a Tamil Nadu Village

Sangeetha expresses deep despair over her treatment as Panchayat president, feeling marginalized and degraded by her colleagues. Despite raising her concerns with higher authorities, she is repeatedly advised to avoid conflict due to the political connections of those mistreating her.
Following the Dalit panchayat president's demonstration, police registered a case against her under the BNS Act, citing a recent directive that mandates permission for protests outside Collectorate campus.
Following the Dalit panchayat president's demonstration, police registered a case against her under the BNS Act, citing a recent directive that mandates permission for protests outside Collectorate campus.
Villupuram/Tamil Nadu- E. Sangeetha, the first Irular woman Panchayat president of Anangur village in Gingee taluk, Villupuram district, has been booked under multiple sections of the BNS Act following her protest at the District Collectorate on Wednesday.

She was demanding action against alleged caste-based discrimination and harassment by her deputy, Chitra Gunasekaran, and her husband, Gunasekaran, a local DMK branch secretary.

Sangeetha has filed formal complaints to the District Collector in July and August, accusing Chitra and her husband of obstructing her official duties since she assumed office three years ago. Despite her efforts, no action has been taken against the couple. In her complaints, Sangeetha alleges that they have denied her access to essential digital tools necessary for her role, used her tribal identity to demean her in public, and threatened her with violence. Chitra has reportedly stated that Sangeetha does not deserve her position due to her caste.

Although the District Collector ordered an inquiry in August and instructed Chitra to grant Sangeetha access to the digital key, no direct communication or inspection has occurred since. Sangeetha continues to face verbal abuse and threats, prompting her to protest. Following her demonstration, police registered a case against her under the BNS Act, citing a recent directive that mandates permission for protests outside Collectorate campuses.uperintendent of Police Deepak Siwach commented on the situation, stating, “We are looking into the issue and will verify the facts.”

In an emotional conversation, with a local media 'Junior Vikatan' Sangeetha shared, "I belong to the Irular tribe, a tribal community. The vice president never allows me to perform my duties. His husband interferes in the administration and makes all the decisions. His brother also meddles in this. It's been three years since I won the election. The first time I attended a village council meeting after my victory, they didn’t even let me sit on a chair. They made me sit on the floor. Whatever the work is, they do it themselves, and they tell me that everything must be done as they say. During the recent Independence Day celebration, I was told that only Panchayat Presidents are supposed to hoist the flag, and if there were any issues, I should inform the police. I told them I had no problems, but when I went to hoist the flag, the vice president came over and insisted that we both do it together. They wouldn't even let me hoist the flag alone.

Whenever I raise these issues with higher authorities, they just tell me not to stir up conflict since the other side has connections with many politicians. They always suggest that I make peace. For the past three years, I have been treated this way. There is also a ward member who speaks to me in a degrading manner. They say things like, 'You're an illiterate leader; you don’t deserve to sit in this chair,' and they insult me using caste names. They even say, 'We are the ones who voted you in, you owe it to us.'

A

But I always respond that it was the people who elected me. These arguments happen even in the workplace. They mockingly say, 'Even though you are the leader, you cannot do anything, only we can do everything.' Even when I file complaints about this, all the higher authorities side with them. I've submitted petitions to the Department of Rural Development, the District Collector, and the Chief Minister. But no action has been taken. That’s why I boycotted the village council meetings and participated in a protest. I've lodged complaints against them, and now I am being pressured by higher authorities to withdraw my complaint. But I haven’t, and I won’t. I will continue to fight,” Sangeetha concluded.

This incident has sparked outrage among various social and political groups, who argue that Sangeetha's treatment reflects a broader issue of caste discrimination and injustice faced by Dalit leaders in Tamil Nadu. Edappadi Palaniswami, General Secretary of the AIADMK, criticized the ruling DMK party for failing to address these injustices while professing to uphold social justice.

Amethi: Police shoot man accused of gunning down entire Dalit family

Posted On October 5, 2024

In defence, Inspector Sachchidanand Rai fired a gunshot which hit Chandan Verma in his right leg

Police shot a 27-year-old man accused of gunning down an entire Dalit family in Amethi in his leg early Saturday while they were recovering the pistol used in the killing at his instance.

According to police, the incident happened when Sub-Inspector Madan Kumar Singh of Shivratanganj Police Station was taking possession of the pistol found near a canal track.Just when Singh was inspecting the pistol and its magazine, Chandan Verma, the accused, snatched Singh’s gun from his holster and fired at him intending to kill him, police in a statement said.

In defence, Inspector Sachchidanand Rai fired a gunshot which hit Verma in his right leg, they said.

Verma was arrested near a toll plaza in Noida Friday night while fleeing to Delhi.

Sunil Kumar, 35, a government school teacher, his 32-year-old wife Poonam, and the couple’s two daughters Drishti and Suni, aged six and one, were shot dead in the Ahorwa Bhawani area of Amethi.

Poonam had once accused Verma of harassing her and also filed a police complaint against him.

Police have seized the country-made pistol and the motorcycle, a black Enfield Bullet, used in the crime.

Meanwhile, Amethi Chief Medical Officer Dr Anshuman Singh said Verma was referred to the district hospital from the community health centre in Tiloi.

“He had sustained bullet injuries on his right leg. He is out of danger,” the CMO said.

Dr Shubham Pandey, a physician posted at the Amethi district hospital, said Verma was brought to the facility between 5.30 am and 5.45 am.

According to Superintendent of Police Anoop Kumar Singh, Verma’s attack on the family was a fallout of an affair he was having with Poonam, one of the victims.

The SP said Verma had been seeing the teacher’s wife for the past 18 months.

Verma fired 10 shots and also tried to shoot himself, but the gun failed, the officer said.

Ahead of the Thursday rampage, Verma posted an update on a messaging app that there were going to be five deaths — his being the fifth.

Earlier police had found that Poonam had complained against Verma in Rae Bareli on August 18 under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, and for harassment.

“If anything happens to me or my family, Verma should be held responsible,” she wrote in the complaint.

“Chandan Verma is a resident of Rae Bareli district. It appears that he reached the house of the victim and got enraged due to some reason after which he began shooting the family members, killing all of them,” the SP said at a press conference here.

In the wake of the incident, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath paid his condolences to the victims’ kin, while the opposition launched a sharp attack against the BJP government over the law and order situation in the state.

Dalit, Woman factors weigh In favour Of Kumari Selja As Haryana CM

Posted On October 5, 2024

It’s no secret that there’s little love lost between Congress leaders Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Kumari Selja, despite the former calling the latter his sister.

By Kanika Sharma

It’s no secret that there’s little love lost between Congress leaders Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Kumari Selja, despite the former calling the latter his sister.

The 77-year-old Hooda, a Jat, dominates Congress affairs in Haryana, and has been a two-time chief minister of the state from 2005 to 2014, when the Narendra Modi wave swept away the Congress and installed the first Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state, with Manohar Lal Khattar becoming the chief minister.

While the BJP’s popularity in the state has dimmed, which prompted the central leadership to replace Khattar with Nayab Singh Saini, the Congress is also battling factionalism.

Reports suggest that Hooda, a powerful satrap, had a say in distribution of more than 75 tickets for the 90-seat Haryana assembly. Should the Congress win the assembly elections, either Hooda is likely to become the next CM, or somebody of his choice will take the reins of the state. This dominance upset Kumari Selja, a dalit, enough for her to skip the initial part of the campaigning, before she was persuaded to join the battle by Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha.

Interestingly, Kumari Selja on Thursday, October 3, met Sonia Gandhi on a day when Ashok Tanwar, who had quit the party exactly five years ago due to intense rivalry with Hooda, and flirted with Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress, Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party, and the BJP, returned to the Congress fold in Rahul Gandhi’s presence in Mahendragarh.

Like Selja, Tanwar too is a Dalit, and has been a member of Lok Sabha in the past from Haryana’s Sirsa constituency.

There is intense speculation that Bhupinder Singh Hooda would like to see his son Deepender become the next Haryana CM and solidify his base in the state, whose politics revolves around the powerful Jat community. Hooda junior is a five-time member of parliament, and is a Congress Lok Sabha member from Haryana’s Rohtak.

The powerful Hooda senior is known for his independent streak, and it would be difficult for the Congress central leadership to ignore his wishes.

At the same time, Kumari Selja, 62, is an old Gandhi family loyalist. And the fact that she’s a dalit and a woman – Haryana never had a woman chief minister – could go in her favour. Kumari Selja hogged the limelight in August 2013, when she was seen accompanying Sonia Gandhi from the Lok Sabha to AIIMS when the then Congress president took ill.

However, Kumari Selja, a Lok Sabha member from Sirsa after defeating Tanwar, who had fought on a BJP ticket, does not enjoy a wide support base, and therefore it would be difficult for her to become the state’s CM, unless the Gandhis directly intervene, and install her on the top post.

At the same time, by meeting Kumari Selja, and re-inducting Tanwar, the Congress high command may have made the going tough for the Hoodas.

Chitralekha, Dalit woman who battled CPM-led caste oppression, dies.

Posted On October 5, 2024

KANNUR: Chitralekha (48), a prominent Dalit social activist, who fought a lone battle against the atrocious dictum of CPM, passed away on Saturday. She was under treatment for cancer. For a long, Chitralekha vociferously stood against CPM alleging the party’s caste-based persecution.

Chitralekha, a native of Edat, invited the wrath of CPM after she opposed the CITU dictum that didn’t allow her to drive an auto rickshaw for a living. The lone battle also had its perils as assailants put fire on her auto both in 2005 and 2013.

Chitralekha’s protest had garnered national attention. In the 2016 assembly elections, she contested as a BSP candidate in Aruvikkara constituency. The cremation will take place on Sunday morning at Payyambalam.

Nizamabad: State Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Commission Chairman Bakki Venkataiah directed the District Collector and Superintendent of Police to take appropriate measures to clear pending cases concerning the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act in the district.

Venkataiah, who held a review meeting on SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act cases on Friday, said the officials should specially review the matter and resolve the pending cases expeditiously.

Efforts should be made to clear all the pending cases within one month, he said, adding that if necessary a special drive should be organised to resolve the issue within the stipulated time.

Expressing displeasure over Village Development Committee members issuing orders boycotting and penalising weaker sections, he said stringent action would be taken against committee members if they tried to take law into their own hands.

Stringent action would be taken against police officials who try to harass people belonging to SC/ST communities, he warned.
