Upper caste women should be grateful to Savitribai Phule

In 1863, the Phule couple started a child murder prevention home. Any widow could come here and give birth to her child. Her name was kept secret. Posters of this child murder prevention home were put up everywhere. It was written on these posters, “Widows! Give birth to your child here anonymously without any hindrance. Take your child with you or keep it here; it will depend on your wish.

Savitribai Phule was born on 03 January, 1831 in Naigaon, Western Maharashtra. Everyone knows the work she did for the education revolution along with her husband Jyotirao Phule. But along with this, the Phule couple also started paying attention to other problems of the society. Especially for women’s liberation.
In that era, the condition of widows was the worst. Most of them were from upper caste Brahmin families. Often, girls were married at a young age to men much older than them. In such a situation, many girls became widows. In these so-called upper castes, these widows could not remarry. The society looked down upon them. They were considered inauspicious and a woman of bad omen. They often wore white or saffron sarees. Their hair was shaved off.
The purpose of all this was that they should not be attracted to other men, nor should any man be attracted to them. The feeling of love should not arise in them. But many times they would get attracted to someone. If they were able to escape from outside men, many times these widows became victims of the lust of their own relatives. In such a situation, if they became pregnant, they had no option but to commit suicide or kill the child after birth.
A similar incident happened with Brahmin widow Kashi Bai. She became pregnant after coming in contact with someone. She gave birth to a child. Forced by public shame, she threw that child in a well. A murder case was filed against him and in 1863 he was sentenced to life imprisonment.
This incident shook Savitribai Phule and Jyotirao Phule to the core. In 1863, the Phule couple started a child murder prevention home. Any widow could come here and give birth to her child. Her name was kept secret. Posters of this child murder prevention home were put up everywhere. It was written on these posters that “Widows! Give birth to your child here anonymously without any hindrance. Take your child with you or keep it here; it will depend on your wish. Otherwise the orphanage will take care of those children. This was the first home of this kind in India for widows. Savitribai Phule herself took care of the women coming to the child murder prevention home and the children born to them.
One night in 1874, while walking on the banks of the Mootha river, Jyotirao’s eyes fell on a woman who was ready to jump into the river to end her life. Jotirao rushed to stop her. The woman told them that she was a widow and had been raped. She was six months pregnant. Jotirao consoled her and took her home. Savitribai welcomed the woman into her home with open arms. The woman gave birth to a baby boy, who was named Yashwant. The Phule couple adopted Yashwant and declared him their legal heir. They educated Yashwant and he went on to become a doctor.
Jotirao and Savitribai not only arranged for her delivery but also adopted her son Yashwant. The fact that the Phule couple decided to adopt a child from an unknown woman instead of giving birth to a child themselves shows their deep commitment to their principles and ideas. By doing so, they openly challenged the prevailing orthodox beliefs about caste, lineage, motherhood, fatherhood, etc. So this was Mata Savitribai Phule. Every woman in India should be indebted to her.

Rohit Vemula’s suicide on 17 January 2016, which was called institutional murder, and Payal Tadvi’s suicide on 22 May 2019 started a big debate on casteism with Dalit and tribal students in big educational institutions. The suicide of Rohit Vemula and Payal Tadvi was in the headlines. Their mothers had filed a PIL in the Supreme Court complaining of caste discrimination in higher educational institutions. Regarding this, the Supreme Court has now sought a reply from UGC on 3 January 2025.
The bench of Justice Suryakant and Justice Ujjwal Bhuiyan has given important instructions in this regard. He also said that he will create an effective mechanism to deal with casteism in educational institutions across the country.

Government will give 5000 rupees to tribal students in Odisha for studies

According to UNICEF report, a large number of children in tribal community of Odisha leave going to school and about 50% girls get married at a young age.
Siddharth Gautam
Discontinuation of studies of tribal youth has been a big problem. The family is unable to bear the expenses of studies and the result is that most of the students’ studies remain incomplete. Odisha government has taken a big step in view of this. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has made a big announcement in this direction while inaugurating the annual tribal fair on January 5.
During this, he launched Shaheed Madho Singh Hath Kharcha Yojana. Under this scheme, the government will give assistance of five thousand rupees to each tribal student studying in class 9th and 11th in government and aided schools across the state. While launching the scheme, the Chief Minister gave financial assistance of Rs 80 crore to 1.6 lakh tribal students. Chief Minister Majhi announced that the state government will provide financial incentives to about two lakh tribal students every year.
Let us tell you that about one fourth (23%) of the total population of Odisha is from the Scheduled Tribe / Tribal community. This is about 8% of the total population of India. After independence, many committees were formed to improve the condition of the tribals. The main ones among them were Renuka Roy in 1959 and Verrier Elwin Committee in 1960. It gave many recommendations for the development of education among the tribals as well as their overall development. But the plans of all these committees remained in vain. According to the report published in the website of UNICEF, a large number of children in the tribal community of Odisha leave going to school and about 50% of the girls get married at an early age.
Now it has to be seen how much this decision of the Odisha government is implemented on the ground. And how much the level of education among the tribals improves due to this. As far as Shaheed Madho Singh Hath Kharch Yojana is concerned, online applications have started to avail its benefits. You can apply for this by visiting www.scholarship.odisha.gov.in.

Ambedkarites took to the streets against Amit Shah in America

Apart from Dalit community, people from minority community also participated in this protest. They made it clear that India cannot be imagined without Babasaheb Ambedkar. During this, Ambedkarites made it clear that this protest will not stop until Amit Shah apologizes.
After this, anger has erupted among Ambedkarites in America as well. After the protest by Ambedkarites in New York recently, now Ambedkarites fiercely attacked Amit Shah on January 4 in Dallas, Texas, America. More than a hundred Ambedkarites gathered together in the City Hall here and raised slogans against Amit Shah.
It is clear that the way Amit Shah commented on Babasaheb during the discussion on the Constitution in Parliament, Ambedkarites living not only in India but all over the world have opened a front against him. And they are in no mood to forgive Amit Shah under any circumstances.
The special thing was that apart from the Dalit community, people from the minority community also participated in this protest. They made it clear that India cannot be imagined without Babasaheb Ambedkar. During this, Ambedkarites made it clear that this protest is not going to stop until Amit Shah apologizes.

A case for quotas in school

Children from marginalised backgrounds often lack support, such as involvement of parents in addressing caste discrimination & challenging prejudices of teachers
Rajesh Ranjan
The Karnataka State Education Policy Commission constituted by the government of Karnataka is considering implementing reservations for scheduled caste, scheduled tribe, and other backward classes students in schools.
Under the current reservation system, seats are allocated to students from these communities in Kendriya Vidyalayas as well as in private unaided schools as per Section 12 of the Right to Education Act, 2009. In this article, I argue the case for reservation in schools along with different ways to tackle discrimination against children belonging to marginalised communities.
Students from marginalised communities face discrimination from teachers and other students. Prima facie it may look like these acts of violence are new. But historical accounts reveal that although the nature and the form of violence have changed, discrimination has remained the same.
Access to education for Dalits, STs, and minorities has remained a daunting challenge. In response to questions in the Rajya Sabha, the Centre informed that the dropout rate among minority community students at the secondary level is 24.4 %. As per data from 2020, 1/4th and 1/5th of tribal and Dalit students, respectively, quit Class IX and Class X. These statistics highlight the impact of violence on marginalised communities, further hindering their access to education. A UNICEF report has also argued that violence in school can reduce attendance, lower academic performance, and increase drop-out rates. Children from marginalised backgrounds often lack institutional support, such as the involvement of parents in addressing caste discrimination and challenging the prejudices of teachers to treat Dalit and tribal students with dignity, further perpetuating structural violence against these students.
Therefore, it is imperative to devise different mechanisms to make schools inclusive. One mechanism could be reservation for students from these communities to ensure adequate representation. Reservation in schools may not eradicate discrimination but it will certainly help in reducing it. In his book, The Foresighted Ambedkar,
Anurag Bhaskar has shown that princely states like “Mysore in south India and Baroda and Kolhapur in western India took considerable interest in the awakening and advancement of the minorities and deprived sections of society”. Some of these were the introduction of reservation policies and quotas in their respective provinces.
Reservation in school will ensure the representation of children from marginalised segments and help in community building and in resisting discrimination against such students.
In India, the discourse on affirmative action policies is largely limited to quota or reservation systems. To tackle discrimination at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels, we must think beyond it. This requires regular consultation with and counselling of students from marginalised communities. The shunning of casteist language, inclusion of human rights, democratic citizenship, anti-caste education and intercultural education in the curriculum, promotion of students’ voices, involving students in peer education and peer mediation activities, welcoming parents and involving them in school decision-making, and forming partnerships with different community organisations and groups working on caste can help in tackling discrimination in schools.
