29-year-old Dalit woman in UP stripped while trying to save kin

Posted On January 18, 2025

PILIBHIT: A 29-year-old Dalit woman was allegedly stripped in front of several villagers in a sugarcane field when she tried to rescue her husband’s younger brother from the clutches of his attackers, who were brutally beating him over some dispute. Six accused were booked following a complaint.

The victim, belonging to a village under Kheri police station, alleged that the accused persons also attacked her with a sharp-edged weapon that caused deep wounds on her right arm. Another man who intervened to save the woman lost a finger on his left hand after he was attacked with a scythe.

The incident took place on Wednesday evening, and FIR was lodged on Thursday.

SHO Santosh Kumar Singh said an FIR was lodged against the accused under BNS section 191 (2) (rioting), 191 (3) (rioting, being armed with a deadly weapon), 115 (2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 76 (assault or use of criminal force against a woman with the intent to disrobe her), and sections of the SC/ST Act. The SHO said the accused were absconding.

I’m a Dalit, why can’t I become CM: Karnataka minister RB Timmapur.

Posted On January 18, 2025

HUBBALLI: Barely 24 hours after AICC general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala, who is party in charge of the state, urged Congress members to refrain from publicly discussing leadership matters, the issue continues to rumble with excise minister RB Timmapur Tuesday insisting that he too was fit to become CM.

Timmapur, a Dalit, questioned why someone from his community couldn’t hold the top post in the state. “Why shouldn’t Dalits make it to the post of CM? Why shouldn’t I become the chief minister? Who will object if I become the CM?” he asked reporters in Hubballi.

Timmapur said that while he “wasn’t sure” if the Congress Legislature Party would approve his name, he would follow the high command’s decision. “Many factors will be taken into consideration. But if the high command decides, I will become the CM,” he said.

He insisted that the party has not cancelled the dinner meeting convened by home minister G Parameshwara, also a Dalit. “We have only postponed the meeting of Dalit functionaries. The woes of Dalits need to be heard. I have spoken about the sacrifice… The high command will decide on a change of CM,” he said, but added that he wasn’t aware of any plans to change the CM or a rotational deal on the issue.

On statewide demonstrations proposed by BJP to protest the cow attack incident in Chamarajpet in Bengaluru, Timmapur said: “Did BJP protest when Dalit’s were murdered? The culprits who mutilated cows should be dealt with. Such incidents should not be politicised. People will teach BJP a lesson if they do not keep away from petty politics.”

Former minister SR Patil also weighed in, expressing support for a member from North Karnataka to take over the CM’s post. “Every MLA aspires to become the CM. No one is a sage. It is natural to demand the coveted post,” he said, adding that the high command would ultimately decide the matter.

Meanwhile, BJP criticised the infighting, calling Congress a “divided house”. “The fight is now over the CM’s chair,” R Ashoka, opposition leader, said. BJP state president BY Vijayendra added, “More than eight Congress functionaries are waiting to become CM. The infighting will soon spill onto the streets.”

Remembering Rohit Vemula: Why it’s time for new law against caste discrimination

Posted On January 18, 2025.

The absence of legal recognition of institutionalised caste discrimination and harassment has thwarted the development of discrimination jurisprudence in India.

17th January, 2025, marks the ninth year since Rohith Vemula’s institutional murder. Dalits and Adivasis across India continue his fight, the latest being the struggle waged by Gopal Das against the Indian Institute of Management, Bengaluru (IIM-B). The reportage around the legal processes availed in the battle between Gopal Das, an Associate Professor of marketing, and IIM-B reveal the roadblocks to justice that leaves thousands of Dalits and Adivasis helpless within the existing legal framework.

It started with the Director of IIM-B, Rishikesha T Krishnan disclosing the caste status of Gopal Das, in a mass email. The thoughtless act, according to Gopal, turned the workplace environment hostile and humiliating for Das. He complained that he was denied opportunities, excluded from institutional activities, forced to withdraw elective courses and PhD programs, and restricted from accessing institutional resources. Further, his applications for promotion were also withheld due to pending inquiry into complaints of harassment.

Convoluted legal strategies  in absence of appropriate laws

In the absence of any straightforward legal remedies, in 2023, Das challenged the withholding of his promotions in a case that remains pending before the High Court of Karnataka.

After trying multiple avenues to challenge the harassment and discrimination, Das sent a formal letter to the Office of the President of India detailing his experiences. The President’s Office directed the Chief Secretary, Government of Karnataka, to initiate a formal investigation. Following this, the Directorate Civil Rights Enforcement (DCRE) was directed to begin its probe in March 2024.

The IIM-B management in its defence has alleged that promotion of Das was stayed due to complaints of harassment received from doctoral students. After the DCRE began the investigation, the institute has also initiated a probe into financial impropriety in raising travel claim bills. Das invoked the High Court’s writ jurisdiction to obtain a stay on this inquiry.  Parallely, the Director and Dean of faculty, IIM-B, has also filed a civil suit for an injunction to prevent Das from making public statements through the media.

In November, the DCRE completed its inquiry and submitted a detailed report to the Principal Secretary of the Social Welfare Department, confirming that there was a disclosure of the caste status of Das, and that the Director, Dean and other faculty members of IIM-B have contributed to workplace discrimination by denying him equal opportunities. It also found that IIM-B had failed to comply with statutory norms by not establishing an institutional mechanism to address grievances of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe employees.

Subsequently, the Social Welfare Commissioner issued a direction to the Bangalore Police Commissioner to register an FIR against the Director, Dean (Faculty), and six other faculty members of IIM-B for insults and abuses under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The High Court of Karnataka, was quick to stay the proceedings arising out of the DCRE inquiry against the faculty members accused of discrimination and harassment. It held that DCRE lacks the jurisdiction and authority to inquire into allegations of harassment of persons belonging to SC/ST communities.

The court did not consider the fact that the DCRE was initially set up as a Civil Rights Enforcement Cell by the Government of Karnataka to monitor and supervise the enforcement of the Untouchability (Abolition) Act, 1955 (later renamed as Protection  of Civil Rights Act, 1955).

As noted by the High Court of Karnataka in S. B. Walikar v. State of Karnataka, the function of the cell includes coordinating the work of all agencies entrusted with the task of taking action on complaints of harassment, ill-treatment, social boycott and atrocities, etc., on the members of Scheduled Caste; and also to investigate instances where the legal rights and entitlements of SC/STs are either violated or not implemented or were only partially implemented.

In the case involving Das, it’s important to understand that justice has been rendered unnecessarily expensive, tiresome and complex by the lack of statutory framework that addresses systemic caste discrimination/harassment.

Systemic casteism: death by a thousand cuts

The ordeal that Gopal Das was put through at IIM-B is referred to as systemic or institutionalised discrimination and harassment. Discouraged by the criminalisation of certain forms of untouchability and caste atrocities, the oppressor castes have resorted to using more sophisticated institutional norms, processes and policies designed to maintain hegemony and exclude Dalits/Adivasis .

Simply put, it is no longer necessary for Savarnas to resort to horrific violence to nudge Dalits/Adivasis out of education and gold-collar professions, towards scavenging and slavery for survival. The seemingly impersonal, indirect institutional mechanisms suffice to maintain the caste order, even as individuals may continue to present an affable personal demeanour.

Although subtle and invisible, such casteism is acutely felt by targeted individuals. They are designed to frustrate and infuriate the targets and make them appear to be overreacting to nothing or exaggerating. Over time these translucent barbs and barriers demoralise Dalits/Adivasis. Their performance takes a hit. It dissuades them from socialising and participating in decision making processes. This institutional setup makes many quit and some, like Rohith Vemula end up losing their life.

Even considering the absence of conscious ill-will, institutional discrimination might be a function of routine, normalised or subconscious motivations, as argued by Lu-in Wang in her work ‘Discrimination by Default: How Racism Becomes Routine’. She argues in the context of black oppression in America that when individuals at the helm  of operating institutions are ignorant of how their decisions or actions may empower or disempower individuals from oppressed communities, it is discrimination by default rather than design.

Regardless, of whether caused by ignorance or ill-will, the harms and impediments that Dalits/Adivasis continue to suffer—everyday microaggressions, nitpicking, loss of opportunities, financial set-backs, improper evaluation of work, arbitrary exercise of discretion, discrimination in task assignments, etc.—need to be recognised and accounted for.

Limits of criminal justice system in addressing systemic casteism

The Protection of Civil Rights Act, 1955 (“civil rights law”)  and SC/STs (Prevention of Atrocities Act), 1989 (“atrocities law”) are the primary laws governing certain overt forms of caste discrimination and harassment in India, by placing criminal liability on individuals.

The main object of the Civil Rights Act and the Atrocities Act is to prevent overtly inhumane and gruesome forms of casteism by penalising individuals. It does little to eradicate caste, root and shoot. It is time to question the relevance of such laws for the socio-economically mobile Dalits/Adivasis, operating in the urban economy—as they are more likely to confront caste as institutional barriers or subtle snubs.

Besides, certain expressions of caste are too onerous to be proved in a criminal trial as noted by the Centre for Law and Policy Research (CLPR), in its policy brief ‘Tackling Caste through Law’. For example, how do you criminalise Savarnas for performing purification rituals after a Dalit person leaves a room. How do you stop people from perpetuating the caste denialist rhetoric against reservations saying that Dalits/Adivasis are lazy incompetent and lack merit. How do you establish that institutional norms and processes are often a guise to deny Dalits/Adivasis opportunities to grow, improve and accumulate capital? Is there a way to document how easily the same rules are bent for Savarnas? How does one account for the appropriation of Dalit/Adivasis knowledge systems by savarnas in academia? It is practically impossible to document such acts given their fleeting yet pervasive nature.

Moreover, penal provisions may be disproportionately retributive in the context of systemic discrimination without meaningfully compensating for the harms suffered and losses incurred. Even though the Atrocity laws provide for compensation for loss of life, limb and property, it is intended for specific and explicit acts of violence defined as ‘atrocities’ by the statute.

For instance, in the case of Kshipra Kamlesh and Shiv Shankar Das, two highly qualified academicians belonging to the SC community, lost years of research work to a calculated theft. The Bombay High Court has held that ‘property’ under the Atrocity laws includes ‘intellectual property’ and directed the Government of Maharashtra to assess the damages and grant appropriate relief to Kamalesh and Das. Instead of celebrating the court’s judgement and siding with the cause of the marginalised, the state government has approached the apex court challenging the said Bombay High Court’s order on the ground that there is no provision in the atrocity laws to provide such reliefs.

The need to reimagine rights and remedies

The existing anti-caste legal framework treats Dalits/Adivasis as mere objects of beneficial/protective legislations. While that has been useful in some regard, it is also crucial to think about how caste functions in the seemingly neutral and casteless arena of private/ civil laws—which govern rights, and liabilities arising between individuals out of contractual or familial relationships.

This is all the more important in light of the shrinking public sector and the neoliberalisation of the Indian economy without annihilation of caste. BR Ambedkar forwarns us against in ‘What the Congress and Gandhi have done to the Untouchables’: “[Untouchables] can be used as shock-absorbers in slumps and deadweights in booms, for in slumps it is the Untouchable who is fired first and the Hindu is fired last and in booms the Hindu is employed first and the Untouchable is employed last.”

Beyond the formal sector, comprising less than 10% of the economy, Dalits/Adivasis remain vulnerable in an informal and unorganised economy strongly determined by caste. Negotiating contractual relationships with Savarnas in such a context is highly inequitable. There is no way to stop a big fish from swallowing a small fish in the wild. But humanity is supposed to answer to a higher calling. What mechanisms can a civilised state put in place to prevent this inequity in contracts between the ruling castes and the oppressed castes?

Studies show that the economic participation of SC/STs has been possible only when absolutely necessary by circumstance or by law. For example, Dalits/Adivasis may be employed at Rs 20 only because a Brahmin would cost Rs 100 for the same employment. Once recruited, the latitudes offered to Brahmins are rarely accorded to Dalits/Adivasis. Additionally, it is completely lawful in India for private establishments to publish discriminatory adverts which offer employment or/and house rentals for “Brahmins only”.

One wonders how reasonable it is to expect Dalits/Adivasis to function and thrive in such an economy, as free and equal business agents?

There is also very little scholarship on caste in the context of private laws on the lines of Dylan C Penningroth’s article ‘Race in Contract Law’ which delves into the role of race in the development of contract law jurisprudence in America. Penningroth frames Black/coloured people as legal actors or users of law who pushed the contours of contract laws in their fight against subordination. Such work becomes useful to draw an account of the law’s role in ‘constructing, naturalizing, and justifying inequality’.

The ongoing case of Echo Recording and Studio v. Illaiyaraja, is a popular case in point. Regardless of his success and talent as a musician, Illaiyaraja’s ability to negotiate a contract to safeguard his interest seems to be unequal to that of his Savarna counterparts. That’s a function privilege. It is of course easy to assert that caste has nothing to do with such individual carelessness, but those of us who know, know.

This is how caste-blind private laws enable indirect perpetuation of caste privilege, rendering the constitutional promise of ‘equal protection of laws’ a hoax for the Dalits/Adivasis.

Could compensating for stigma discourage prejudice?

Ambedkar’s studied remark on the economic advantages of caste in ‘What the Congress and Gandhi have done to the Untouchables’, remains relevant, he writes:

“As an economic system it permits exploitation without obligation. Untouchability is not only a system of unmitigated economic exploitation, but it is also a system of uncontrolled economic exploitation. That is because there is no independent public opinion to condemn it and there is no impartial machinery of administration to restrain it. There is no appeal to public opinion, for whatever public opinion there is it is the opinion of the Hindus who belong to the exploiting class and as such favour exploitation. There is no check from the police or the judiciary for the simple reason that they are all drawn from the Hindus, and take the side of the Exploiters.

Those who believe that Untouchability will soon vanish do not seem to have paid attention to the economic advantages which it gives to the Hindus. Untouchable cannot do anything to get rid of his untouchability. It does not arise out of any personal fault on his part. Untouchability is an attitude of the Hindu. For Untouchability to vanish, it is the Hindu who must change. Will he change ?”

The CLPR Policy brief recommends that caste discrimination be recognised as civil wrong with specific reliefs such as monetary compensation or directive orders, enforceable through courts. Although certain kinds of losses borne by Dalits/Adivasis are perhaps unquantifiable. For instance, Gopal Das has suffered various hostilities since his caste location was disclosed in a mass email, including set-backs to his illustrious career as an academician. How does one think of justice when such a disclosure might mean more opportunities and reverence for a Brahmin, but mean contempt and humiliation for a Dalit?

What sort of additional consideration for SC/STs might off-set the stigma and artificial barriers imposed by the Chaturvarna social order? What would a proportionate, yet adequate consequence be for persons who cause such harms or perpetuate stigma? Would mandatory caste sensitisation programmes help create a more harmonious institutional environment and foster fraternity?

And would making institutions financially liable discourage prejudice and complicity in perpetuating caste on behalf of individuals?

Call for a law against caste discrimination and harassment

The absence of legal recognition of institutionalised caste discrimination and harassment has thwarted the development of discrimination jurisprudence in India. It is also why there is a dearth of qualitative data on the same. For instance, is the person performing the purification ritual to cleanse the space occupied by a Dalit observing his religion or practicing discrimination? What compels authorities to recognize such an act as a form of humiliation?

There have been long standing demands for such a law, popularised as Rohith Act, since Rohith Vehmula’s institutional murder. There have been multiple attempts to draft such a law by the National Campaign on Dalit Human Rights (NCDHR) and the SC department of All India Congress Committee (AICC-SC). There have also been political promises by the Indian National Congress to enact such a law. However, these drafts have not been shared in public for a discourse on the aims, objectives and framework of such a law—possible definitions, guiding principles, rights, duties, responsibilities, remedies, mechanisms, enforcement mechanisms etc.

One hopes that the legal quandaries discussed above, serve as an impetus for rekindling the  conversation on a law against caste discrimination and harassment. For without such a law the arbitrary wishes of Savarnas will remain law for Avarnas, to paraphrase Ambedkar.

Chilling details emerge in Dalit athlete gangrape case: Began with childhood friend, leading to abuse by 57 others

Posted On January 18, 2025

The abuse of the Kerala athlete began when she was just 13 years old, allegedly at the hands of her childhood friend

The probe also found that the Kerala girl was taken by a youth to a rubber plantation in Ranni, where he raped her along with three others

Days after the shocking revelation of a Kerala athlete’s gangrape, chilling details have surfaced as police arrest 44 men in connection with the case. The Kerala Police has so far identified 58 men for allegedly sexually assaulting the teenager for five years, starting from a childhood friend. The arrested men are reportedly from the settlement where the girl lived and neighbouring areas.

The abuse of the Kerala athlete began when she was just 13 years old, allegedly at the hands of her childhood friend, Subin. The boy, also a teenager at the time, sexually assaulted the girl and recorded photos, and videos of her. He later used the footage to threaten her into giving sexual favours to his friend.

According to a News Minute report, this friend brought in more men who sexually assaulted the girl. Over the next few years, daily wage labourers, some men from the same locality abused the girl.

Threatening the girl with her pictures and videos, several accused met the girl at a private bus stand in Pathanamthitta. She was then taken to various locations in vehicles and subjected to abuse, the investigation so far has revealed.

The probe also found that the girl, while she was studying class XII last year, was taken by a youth who was acquainted with her through Instagram to a rubber plantation in Ranni, where he raped her along with three others. There are five instances of gangrape. The Dalit girl was sexually assaulted inside a car and at the Pathanamthitta General Hospital in January 2024.

The report mentioned that the girl’s photos and videos circulated among men and even minors. Some accused have been identified as some students from her college and are her classmates from her school. The accused contacted the girl through WhatsApp and Instagram. Two accused are currently out of India.

“Word may have spread from one man to another, to their circle of friends or colleagues. Quite a lot of the accused are from her neighbourhood and daily wage labourers, but there are others too. We were shocked to hear her name so many men,” N Rajeev, chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), told TNM.

“Two of the accused are absconding. They are abroad at present. We are considering issuing Look out Circulars for them. We are also planning to issue a Red Corner notice for them through Interpol,” DIG S Ajeetha Begum, who is overseeing the investigation in the Kerala athelete’s gangrape case, said.

How did the matter of Kerala athlete’s gangrape came to light?

The gangrape came to light when the girl was councelled by the Child Welfare Committee, after the victim’s teachers at an educational institution informed the panel about noticeable changes in her behaviour. The Committee, subsequently, notified the police and an investigation is on.

Prayagraj Dalit BJP Leader Beating Case: The issue of beating of Dalit leader in Prayagraj police station has heated up. In this case, the Scheduled Caste unit of the party has shown a tough attitude. The unit has clearly said that the Morcha will not sit silent in this matter. At the same time, action has started against the accused policemen.

Curated by Rahul Parashar

  • Manoj Pasi is the co-treasurer of the state unit of BJP SC Morcha
  • Manoj Pasi was beaten up in Jhunsi police station of Prayagraj
  • SC Morcha president heated up in the matter of beating of BJP Dalit leader
  • Demanded action against SHO and other accused police officers

Prayagraj: The issue of beating of Dalit leader of Bharatiya Janata Party in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh has become quite heated. A case of attack on Manoj Pasi, co-treasurer of the state unit of BJP Scheduled Caste Morcha, in the police station has come to light. Manoj Pasi has alleged that SHO Upendra Pratap Singh and six other policemen assaulted him. Dalit functionary of SC Morcha alleged an alleged attack inside Jhunsi police station. BJP SC Morcha has come forward on this. The Morcha said that we will not sit quiet in such a case.

What is the matter?

A case of assault on Manoj Pasi has come to light in Jhunsi police station. He alleges that he had gone to the police station to get information about the construction work stopped by the police at his brother’s house. Manoj Pasi alleges that during this time SHO Upendra Pratap Singh, sub-inspector and four other constables assaulted him.

On getting information about the incident, all the senior leaders of the party including local MLA, mayor, officials of various cells of BJP reached the police station and Manoj’s house. BJP leaders demanded immediate action against the guilty policemen.

Four suspended

Prayagraj DCP City Abhishek Bharti has suspended four policemen including three sub-inspectors and a constable in this case. No action has been taken against the SHO yet. There has been no statement from Prayagraj Commissioner Tarun Gauba and DCP Abhishek Bharti in this matter yet. ACP Jhunsi Vinal Kishore Mishra has said that four policemen have been suspended with immediate effect.

Regarding the allegations of assault on Manoj Pasi, the ACP said that it will be confirmed in the investigation. On the question whether the investigation of the case has been handed over to any officer? The ACP said that it has not been handed over to any officer yet.

Manoj gave information

Manoj Pasi, while talking to the Indian Express about the whole matter, said that his brother Roshan Lal had bought land near his house four years ago. He was getting a boundary wall constructed on his land. His neighbor objected to this and complained to the police. He said that the policemen came and stopped the construction work. They also abused me and my brother. I went to the police station around 12 noon on Wednesday.

I was asking the SHO and local outpost Chamanganj in-charge Santosh Singh if there was any written order to stop the work? Let the SDM decide the matter, as it is a matter related to revenue. I also asked them why were they abusing me?

On hearing this, SHO Upendra Pratap Singh, sub-inspector Santosh Singh and four other policemen dragged me into a room in the police station. I was brutally assaulted. I fainted. I later came to know that some policemen rushed me to the hospital, Manoj Pasi said.

He complained to DCP Abhishek Bharti about the assault on Wednesday night, but no FIR has been filed yet, he said. He said four policemen have been suspended, but no action has been taken against the SHO yet. The DCP told me that the SHO is not being removed due to Maha Kumbh duty.

SC Morcha President condemned

State BJP SC Morcha President Ramchandra Kanaujia condemned the assault. He said that until action is taken against the guilty policemen. A case is not registered against them for harassing a Dalit, we will not sit quiet. Manoj Pasi had not committed any crime, but he was beaten up in a way that even a hardcore criminal is not treated like this.

The president said that Manoj was seriously injured. He was not even able to speak properly. Manoj Pasi’s wife Sanno Devi also alleged that when she heard about the assault and went to the police station, the policemen also misbehaved with her. She alleged that when I asked whether my husband was killed inside the police station?

Sanno Devi said that no one was telling me about my husband’s whereabouts. On hearing my question, Sub Inspector Vipin Yadav twisted my hand and snatched my mobile phone. He also abused me. Now this whole matter has been taken very seriously by the BJP SC Morcha.

The Wire shields Islamists after UP Police arrest them for attempting to convert a Dalit family by promising ‘healing’ and financial inducements

The Wire religious conversion UP Hamirpur
The Wire recently published an article seeking to shield Islamists arrested for religious conversion

Far-left propaganda portal The Wire recently published an article showcasing the Uttar Pradesh Police in a bad light for arresting a group of 5 Muslim men who hoodwinked a Dalit family with superstitious claims of curing their illness by praying to their Muslim ‘saint’.

Family vacation packages

The men were arrested in the Hamirpur district of Uttar Pradesh on charges of unlawful religious conversion after they organised a commemorative prayer ceremony for a Muslim spiritual leader’s death anniversary at a Dalit family’s residence.

The individuals—Nooruddin (55), Meraj Hasan (32), Khalif (42), Irfan (46), and Mohammad Hanif (52)—were charged with criminal intimidation and violations under Sections 3 and 5(1) of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021.

The Wire published a report seeking to shield perpetrators of religious conversion
Family vacation packages

The accused also got the Dalit family to build a mazar inside their residence. They persuaded the unsuspecting victims to pray to their saint to mitigate the health issues of Urmila, one of the members of the Dalit family, and alleviate their hardships.

According to a report published in the Times of India, the accused were arrested after Urmila filed a complaint that she was coerced to change her religion under threats while being promised treatment for her illness and involvement of Hindu advocacy groups that amplified her assertions and forced police to act.

According to Urmila Verma from Mohalla Purvi Tarous Baki Talaiya, Maudaha, she had been suffering from an illness for about two years. During this period, she met a person from Mohalla Chipathari in the Banda district, who introduced her to Nooruddin, an alleged cleric from Mohalla Kasoda Mathura Mandir in Maudaha. Nooruddin assured her that visiting a shrine would cure her condition.

Subsequently, Nooruddin and his nephews Merajul Hasan and Khaliq from Mohalla Ragaul visited Urmila’s home. They suggested constructing a shrine in a corner of her room and conducting prayers and a Urs ceremony. They allegedly discussed religious conversion with her family members.

On January 10, at around 2:30 a.m., Nooruddin, Khaliq, and Irfan Ahmad from Hussainia, along with Hanif Shah from Baki Talaiya, arrived at her residence. They performed the Urs ceremony and led prayers. The ceremony was reportedly halted for a brazen attempt to convert a Dalit Hindu family into Islam by promises of healing and financial inducements.

While The Wire mentioned in its report that the accused offered allurements and promises of curing her illness to get Urmila and her family to embrace Islam, the far-left publication did all it could to brand the accused as victims and the Hindu advocacy group, namely Bajrang Dal in this case, as the aggressor responsible for the predicament of the 5 Muslim men arrested for religious conversion.

The headline of the article “Uttar Pradesh Police Arrest 5 Muslim Men After Bajrang Dal Alleges ‘Conversion’ Plan” suggests that Bajrang Dal brought about the arrest of the 5 Muslim men and not the criminal activities they were involved in. The men were arrested on the complaint filed by the victim, yet The Wire crafted a headline that spotlights Bajrang Dal, a Hindu advocacy group that steadfastly supports Hindus around the country and is often the thorn in the side of the Islamists wanting to paint the society with its radicalising colours.

Arfa Khanum Sherwani, a propagandist with a penchant for supporting Islamist causes and who is a senior editor at The Wire, posted a tweet seeking to advance the portal’s attempt to demonise the police for doing its job and stopping Muslim zealots who consider bringing non-Muslims into the fold of Islam as their bounden duty, often employing a range of tools, including inducements, intimidation, and gaslighting, to achieve their goals.

Taking to alarmism, which she often does, presumably to keep Muslims in a state of perpetual fear, Arfa hyperbolically tweeted, “In Hindu Rashtra, simply being Muslim is a crime. You don’t need to break laws or commit any crime. All it takes is existing, breathing, & being who you are—and that alone makes you a target.”

She added, “This is the ugly truth of a regime that criminalizes Muslims for daring to live as they are”, for the arrest of men who took advantage of the misery of a Dalit family and attempted to convert them to Islam.

However, this is but one case where The Wire has subtly tried to shield Islamists using unfair means to indulge in religious conversions. In many instances in the past, the far-left publication has resorted to every trick in its propaganda playbook—from lying to gaslighting to conjuring up fictitious scares such as the Tek Fog and Meta fictional stories—as a part of its agenda to discredit the government and contribute towards its longstanding goal at effecting regime change.
