Inclusion of Christian suffix to sub-castes in draft caste list opposed

Members of the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Backward Classes District Coordination Committee has opposed the State government’s move to include sub-castes with Christian suffix in the caste list drafted by the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes ahead of the socio-educational and economic survey starting September 22.
The former Minister Baburao Chavan and committee members Avanna Myakeri and Ambaraya Ashtagi, addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, said that the Siddaramaiah-led government has added the suffix Christian to 50 sub-castes that do not exist. This has been done in a strategic way to divide the Hindus and encourage conversions, they said.
The Nagamohan Das Commission constituted to conduct a survey of 1.07 crore population of sub-castes among Scheduled Castes has taken three months for the survey. Then, how is it possible to complete the survey of seven crore population comprising 1,400 sub-castes in just 15 days, Mr. Myakeri asked.
Mr. Ashtagi said that Mr. Siddaramaiah uses the caste census and survey to distract people whenever his position (Chief Minister) is under threat.
The socio-economic and education survey report launched in 2015 under the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government spent nearly ₹165 crore and the report was submitted in 2024. On the directions of the Congress high command, Mr. Siddaramaiah did not implement the report and decided to conduct a fresh caste re-enumeration, as some communities have claimed that they have been excluded from the caste survey conducted a decade ago, Mr. Ashtagi said.
The committee members also submitted a memorandum addressed to the Governor through the Deputy Commissioner urging him to direct the Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission to remove the suffix Christian added to other castes from the list before conducting survey.

“BJP’s Fight to Ensure Justice for Communities Deprived of Internal Reservation”.
Bengaluru:Former Chief Minister and MP Basavaraj Bommai said that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has implemented internal reservation for political gain, violating the Supreme Court order and ignoring Justice Nagamohan Das’report, thereby committing social injustice.The BJP will fight to secure justice for the communities deprived of reservation.
Speaking at a press conference held at the BJP office on Saturday,he said the Father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi wished that all sections of society should take part in the freedom struggle.At that time,the architect of the Indian Constitution,Dr.B.R.Ambedkar questioned what the condition of the oppressed classes was.
Gandhi and Ambedkar discussed this for a week in Pune,and Gandhi agreed to several points.On some matters,Gandhi said immediate justice was difficult but could be achieved in the future.This was known as the Poona Pact.
After that,all communities participated in the freedom movement.During the drafting of the Constitution, reservation was decided based on the Poona Pact.
He said the Congress party were the beneficiaries of the freedom struggle as they focused only on their political gains and hesitated to accept the provisions included by Dr Ambedkar in the Constitution.
It was decided that reservation should be provided continuously to the relevant communities. The Congress included SC communities but never increased the reservation.
While there were six castes under the SC category earlier, now there are 101.By not increasing the reservation, Congress committed injustice, which caused discontent.A movement for internal reservation started in Andhra Pradesh and spread to Karnataka as well.
Landmark Decision:
The former CM said during the coalition government, the Justice Nagamohan Das Committee was constituted to examine the issue of increasing reservation.
Former CM Yediyurappa set a time limit for submitting the report.When he was the CM,they decided to increase reservation.Many warned him that he was putting his hand into a beehive.
He replied that even if the bees stung me, he would still give them honey. In November 2022, the previous BJP government increased SC reservation from 15% to 17% and ST reservation from 3% to 7%.This was a landmark decision.
Social Injustice:
The MP said at that time,Opposition leader in the Legislative Assembly Siddaramaiah claimed that no increase in reservation had taken place.He said a constitutional amendment was required.Even after becoming CM,he repeated the same.
Meanwhile,Prime Minister Narendra Modi,committed to social justice, directed the Solicitor General to argue in the Supreme Court in support of our decision.
Based on this, on December 1, 2024,the Supreme Court ruled that states had the authority to provide internal reservation.
The court also said accurate data must be available, backwardness must be identified,and weaker communities should not be grouped with dominant ones.
Accordingly,the state government constituted the Justice Nagamohan Das Committee.After a survey,the committee submitted its report.
However, the government ignored Justice Nagamohan Das’ report, Justice Sadashiva Commission’s report, and Madhu Swamy’s report. Instead, they classified SC communities as: SC-A (6%), SC-B (6%), and SC-C (5%) purely as a political decision.
Then why was a commission needed at all? Both Madhu Swamy and Nagamohan Das reports had recommended 1% reservation for nomadic communities.
This government, only to safeguard its vote bank, ignored that and committed social injustice by not following the Supreme Court’s order.
Bommai said the state government did not classify reservation on the basis of population. Earlier, there were categories such as Adi Andhra, Adi Karnataka, and Adi Dravida. This government discarded those and created SC-A, SC-B, and SC-C. Some communities were left out entirely.
Nomadic tribes, who live in the most miserable conditions, were denied any reservation. No one is happy with the government’s internal reservation scheme.
Even members of the SC right-hand community protested against it. By adding 59 castes along with Lambanis and Bhovis, the government has complicated the issue.
When people approached them, the government replied that it was a political decision and asked them to go to court. They have made it an unresolved knot.
Will You Apologize?
He said CM Siddaramaiah is an experienced politician. They had increased reservation earlier, which the Congress leader opposed.Now, based on the same principle, he has implemented internal reservation.
” Will you apologize to those communities now? Or will you increase it by another 1% and deliver justice to them? You speak about giving them a package. Is this some business deal? Those communities must be given permanent justice”.
Legal Battle
When asked about BJP’s demand before the government, he said their demand is that the government must accept the Nagamohan Das report.
Another 1% must be given to nomadic communities.The reservation given to Bhovis and Lambanis must be revised.
The communities of AK, AD, and AA must be given justice. Internal reservation must be implemented in education, recruitment, and employment. BJP will stand with all communities and fight to deliver justice. There is still room for the government to resolve the issue. If not, they will also wage a legal battle.
