A Dalit leader on Sunday, alleged that a couple of non-Hindu youth were making derogatory comments against Dalits on social media platforms and sought immediate action against them. City Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal asked him to file a police plaint to take action.
Participating in the monthly SC/ST grievances redressal meeting at the City Police Commissionerate, Sadashiva Urwastore said the youth had posted a statement, “Dalits should be separated from caste Hindus; that Dalit women should be made wear burqa,” and such other statements. These statements, Mr. Urwastore said, would create enmity between communities besides offending the Dalit community. He sought immediate action against the culprits.
Mr. Urwastore appreciated the Ullal Police gesture in cautioning a person who had donned Guliga Daiva vesha during the recent Ganapati immersion procession and behaved indecently. He said the Police Inspector had summonned the person, Dinesh Neermarga, the organisers, Mr. Urwastore and others to the station where Mr. Neermarga apologised for his behaviour.
Navaratri Vesha
Another Dalit leader Kiran Kumar highlighted the nuisance being created by people wearing different veshas (costumes) visiting households and collecting money during the Navaratri season. Many wear bear costumes which is easy to do, he said, adding that there should be some regulation in place. Such people might pose safety threats to residents too, he felt. Others at the meeting suggested registering such persons with the jurisdictional police before they hit the streets.
Mr. Agrawal asked officials to contemplate some measures, at least for the next season.
Parking woes
Mr. Urwastore also highlighted the plight of visitors to the District Government Wenlock Hospital in parking their vehicles. Even ambulances that bring patients are not allowed to park on the premises, he said citing the recent skirmish involving Asif Apatbandhava, who brought two patients in his ambulance. Others too said parking was available only for doctors and other staff while general public are denied the facility. The Commissioner directed the jurisdictional police to immediately sort out the issue.
Regarding complaints about the non-visibility of beat constables, Mr. Agrawal said soon, names and details of beat constables would be put out at a prominent place in every street. On Dalit leader S.P. Anand’s complaint of the new Ambedkar Bhavan at Ganjimut put to disuse, the Commissioner asked the concerned to get in touch with the gram panchayat to put it to use.

TNN / UPDATED: OCT 23, 2023, 19:20 IST
A 17-year-old girl who had eloped with her Dalit friend and was rescued by the police was allegedly killed by her father in Bengaluru. The father, who also attacked his wife and brother-in-law, surrendered to the police. The girl, named Pallavi, belonged to the Gowda community and was in love with a boy from the Scheduled Caste. The father claimed that his reputation was being tarnished because of his daughter's romantic involvement and attempts to elope. The injured are receiving treatment and are out of danger.
BENGALURU: A 17-year-old girl who had eloped with her Dalit friend and rescued by police was killed allegedly by her father at Doctors Layout in Naganathapura, near Parappana Agrahara, on Saturday.
Accused Ganesha, 50, a resident of Kalihundi in HD Kote in Mysuru, who also attacked his wife and brother-in-law, surrendered before the Parappana Agrahara police later in the evening. The deceased was identified as Pallavi and the injured are Ganesha's wife Sharadha and Shantha Kumar, husband of Sharadha's sister Geetha.
Pallavi, who is from the Gowda community, was studying PU in HD Kote and was said to be in love with a boy from Scheduled Caste, who worked in a shop in HD Kote.
The two were friends from their schooldays. Two months ago, she reportedly eloped with her boyfriend. Police traced her and handed over to the family. Ganesha, a farmer, then left Pallavi in Geetha's care at Doctors Layout. Pallavi fled Geetha's house on October 14. A complaint of kidnapping was registered on October 18. Police traced her on October 20 and left her at Geetha's house. On Saturday morning, Ganesha came to the house.
He told his daughter his reputation was being tarnished in their village because of her romantic involvement and attempts to elope.
Ganesha then got into an argument with his wife Sharadha, blaming her for not keeping a watch on their daughter's activities. He took a machete and attacked Pallavi, inflicting multiple blows on her neck and head. When Sharadha tried to stop Ganesha, she, too, was attacked. He left the house with the machete.
Kumar, Geetha's husband, bumped into Ganesha. He accused Kumar, too, of not keeping an eye on his daughter. He attacked him with the machete and escaped.
Later, he surrendered before police and admitted to the crime. The injured are undergoing treatment atVictoria Hospital and are out of danger, said doctors. Ganesha told police that it wasn't the boy's caste that upset him as much as his daughter not focusing on her studies.

Dalit school principal ends life in Gujarat, 5 booked for abetment
TNN / UPDATED: OCT 22, 2023, 07:55 IST
A 52-year-old principal of a government school in Gujarat died by suicide, blaming five people, including three teachers and the sarpanch, for insulting him over his caste. The principal, Kanti Chauhan, alleged that he was being harassed and subjected to casteist slurs. He also accused the sarpanch of pressuring him and spreading negative messages about him on social media. Chauhan had been removed from his position as principal, but he continued to be in charge. The police have booked the accused and are conducting an investigation.
Dalits gathered outside Bagasara police station on Saturday to protest against the death of the principal
RAJKOT: A 52-year-old in-charge principal of a government school died by suicide in Janjariya village of Amreli's Bagasara taluka, blaming five people including three teachers and the sarpanch for heaping insults on him over his caste.
Kanti Chauhan, a Dalit, consumed poison during school hours on Friday, and he was hospitalized after he informed his wife about the extreme step. He was referred to the Junagadh Civil Hospital where he succumbed.
Police booked sarpanch Mukesh Borisagar, three teachers - Ranjan Lathiya, Hansa Tank, and Bhavna - and another person named Vipul Kyada for abetment of suicide. Before ending his life, Chauhan circulated a video message in which he alleged that he was being insulted by the accused and they frequently hurled casteist slurs at him.
He also accused Borisagar of pressuring him to hand over the government grants and instigating villagers and children against him by demonizing him. The principal also alleged that Borisagar circulated messages on social media groups talking ill about him and his caste. "I belong to a lower caste but I am in the profession of teaching. Please don't snatch this away from me. You are trying to malign us using our caste as a weapon, which is shameful for you as a sarpanch," he said in the message.
He also expressed fear of going to school, apprehending that the sarpanch would get him killed.
Chauhan alleged that he was pressured to divert the government grants disbursed through the school management committee (SMC) for using it for other purposes in the village. In the complaint, his wife stated that for the benefit of students, Chauhan had started giving two hours of extra time before school hours. One of the students used to remain absent and Chauhan scolded him and asked him to come early to the school.
This did not go down well with his parents and pressure mounted on him not to hold extra classes.
Police said Chauhan was removed from the principal's post and this was allegedly conspired by Borisagar and Kyada. He continued to be in charge. On Saturday, Dalits gathered at the Bagasara police station and refused to accept his body until the accused were arrested. JP Bhanderi, deputy superintendent of police, Amreli said, "We have formed 10 teams of 90 policemen to nab the accused who are on the run."
Himkar Singh, superintendent of police, Amreli district told TOI: "We will conduct a free and fair investigation in the case and probe deep to ascertain what exactly led to him to suicide."

A Dalit man's suicide note, naming three police officers including the circle inspector, has sparked protests in Karwar. Maruti Naik, a Dalit activist, accused the officers of torturing him after he filmed a non-Hindu Dalit activist allegedly abusing Hindu gods. An FIR has been lodged against the activist and two others, but the accused police officers have not been named.

KARWAR: The death of a Dalit man who in his suicide note named three police officers, including the circle inspector of Karwar rural police station, sparked a protest by locals demanding action against the police personnel.
Maruti Naik, a Dalit activist, died by suicide on Friday leaving behind a death note. He was in the news last month after he captured a video of non-Hindu Dalit activist, Elisha Elakapati, while the latter was allegedly abusing Hindu gods.
In his three-page death note, Naik said after the video incident, Rural CPIKusumadhar, PSI Devaraj, and other police personnel tortured him. Further, the policemen repeatedly called him to the station and thrashed him.
The death note states that Devaraj had come to Naik's house and beat him up, leaving him with a bleeding nose and mouth.
Kusumadhar even warned him that nobody would come to his rescue if he were killed, Naik wrote in the note. Naik had complained against Elakapati over his alleged comments on Hindu gods. Although Elakapati was arrested, he was released on bail after a few days. Naik's family alleged that Elakapati's relatives then came to their house and stabbed Naik.
When Naik went to the police station and tried to file a complaint of "attempt to murder", police allegedly did not respond positively, the family said. Instead, Naik's family alleged that police dismissed the incident as a fight over drinking water and filed cases against both the parties.
Naik was under constant fear and took his own life, his wife said. Police lodged an FIR in connection with the suicide against Elakapati and two others named in the death note, but did not name the three police officers whom Naik accused as having beaten him up.
