Dehradun, Dec 11 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi began new experiments to steer Scheduled Castes, Dalits and tribal communities on the path of development while governments before 2014 lacked the political will to work to uplift these sections, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said on Monday.
“Under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, not only the Centre but also state governments are making schemes with the interest of these sections in mind,” Dhami said at a conference of Scheduled Caste people’s representatives.
The budgetary allocation for Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) welfare has increased year after year, Dhami said at the event.
Villages with 50 per cent SC/ST population were adopted to be developed as model villages and given priority in schemes such as the Ujjwala Yojana and Ayushman Bharat Yojana, the Uttarakhand chief minister added.
“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, their vision is being turned into reality. The next chief minister of Chhattisgarh also represents a tribal area. It is respecting India’s democratic values and ideals,” Dhami said. PTI ALM SZM

The Tripura Left Front Committee has strongly condemned and opposed the demand of Janajati Suraksha Mancha (JSM) for the delisting of tribals who have converted to Christianity from the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category and termed it 'unconstitutional'.
In a press statement, the Left Front Committee expressed deep concern over an organization called Janajati Suraksha Mancha announcing an agitation demanding the exclusion of Scheduled Tribe converts to Christianity from the list of Scheduled Tribes.
"The country's constitution and no laws mandate the identification of scheduled castes or tribes based on religion. The country's secular constitution gives every Indian citizen the right to adopt a religion of his/her own choice. This demand of Janajati Suraksha Manch is unconstitutional and divisive. December 25th is the birthday of Jesus Christ, celebrated worldwide irrespective of caste and religion. On that day, Janajati Suraksha Mancha's demand to exclude Scheduled Tribes who converted to Christianity from the list of tribes was extremely provocative," the press statement reads.
The Left Front Committee claims that Janajati Suraksha Mancha is an organization run by RSS, and many BJP leaders are at the helm of this organization.
"RSS is determined to deprive tribal people of their rights to water, land, and forests. The Forest Rights Act seeks to take away the tribals' rights over forests, and the BJP, in the interest of corporations, has amended the Forest Rights Act for this purpose. The Tripura Left Front Committee strongly opposes the anti-constitutional and divisive claims of the BJP party and the government in the name of Janajati Suraksha Mancha. We urge people of all religions, castes, and communities to maintain peace, harmony, and brotherhood," it reads.

Vacancies Plague NCST: 4 positions out of 5 lying vacant, no Chairperson since July 2023, no Vice-Chairperson since 2019
The data provided by the union is extremely worrying and raises concerns regarding the working of the said commission as the composition of the NCST prescribes 1 chairperson, 1 vice-chairperson and three full time members. According to the data, the said commission has only one working member at present as 4 out of its 5 posts are lying vacant.

Address concerns over untouchability A legislature panel says the inhuman practice persists in parts of Karnataka
The finding does not come as a surprise because Karnataka has kept the pernicious practice of untouchability alive. So prevalent is this practice, especially in rural areas, that the previous BJP government led by Basavaraj Bommai had to launch a special awareness programme at the gram panchayat level. The scheme, Vinaya Samarasya Yojana, was named after Vinaya, a three-year-old Dalit from Koppal district, whose family was fined Rs 25,000 because he had entered a temple. Ironically, upper caste leaders ostracised the family, forcing it to abandon its house and land and leave the village. Kota Srinivasa Poojary, then social welfare minister, had informed the Assembly that crimes against the SC/ST community were common in the state, but the conviction rate was only 7%. In October 2022, hundreds of Dalits in Shorapur taluk of Yadgiri district converted to Buddhism in protest against inequalities and the untouchable tag they had to bear. Dealing with a case where a Dalit family was prevented from entering a temple, the Karnataka High Court observed in October this year, “It is rather unfortunate that despite the Constitutional abolition of any form of untouchability, it still remains and persists in rural areas. The fact that it is still prevailing shocks the conscience of the court.”
The prevalence of untouchability even seven decades after it was abolished is a blot on the fair name of Karnataka. The government should come down heavily on any form of ostracism and ensure that the guilty are dealt with with a heavy hand. Untouchability, the evil practice of discriminating against people on the basis of their caste, has no place in civil society.

MP: Baba Saheb’s Statue Vandalised, Enraged Dalits Raise Slogans Outside Police Station In Barwani
Prakash Thackeray said that the miscreants garlanded the statue of Baba Saheb with leaves and strongly condemned the action.
Khetia (Madhya Pradesh): Enraged members of the Dalit community staged a demonstration in front of the police station in Khetia village of Barwani district, demanding stern action against unidentified perpetrators who attempted to inflict damage to the statue of Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar.
Community members in large numbers reached the police station and submitted an application under the leadership of Dalit Utthan Samiti chairman Prakash Thackeray to police station in-charge and city inspector Sher Singh Baghel, demanding stern action against the miscreants.
Prakash Thackeray said that the miscreants garlanded the statue of Baba Saheb with leaves and strongly condemned the action. Community members are also angry that the statue was damaged despite being near the police station.
Dalit community district president Dr Sunil Bagle also reached the police station and demanded the arrest of the perpetrators as soon as possible. Community members were given reassurances of an investigation into the matter by the city inspector.
In the 1930s, Ambedkar initiated organized campaigns for the rights of Dalits. He insisted on the freedom of all castes to access temples and the availability of public drinking water sources. He organized symbolic protests to enter the Kalaram Temple in Nashik and publicly denounced Hindu texts that support bigotry.
He used a variety of strategies to protect Dalit rights. By influencing public opinion through his works in several publications, including Mook Nayak, Vahishkrit Bharat, and Equality Janta, which he founded for the defense of Dalit rights, Ambedkar initiated a movement against Dalit prejudice.

Gopalganj Dalit headmistress assaulted, case registered
Bihar News Desk: A young man under the influence of alcohol abused and assaulted Lakshmi Devi, the headmistress of the primary school, Nathanpura, Aanti Panchayat, located in the Kadirganj OP area of the district.
The incident is said to have happened in the school premises. The headmistress is said to be from a Dalit family and is a resident of Anti. It is alleged that during school hours, Rishiraj Singh of Nathanpura village reached the school under the influence of alcohol and started misbehaving with the headmistress. Meanwhile, the headmistress informed her husband and son about the incident over phone. When son Sahil reached there to rescue his mother, the accused beat him up too. Meanwhile, he mentally harassed the headmistress by using caste related words.
FIR lodged
According to Kadirganj OPD President Neeraj Kumar, after getting information about the incident from the headmistress, the police reached the school. By that time the accused had left from there. On the application of the headmistress, an FIR has been registered against the accused. The headmistress has complained about the matter to the education department and other senior officials and has demanded action against the accused.
