The Maharashtra government on January 27 issued a notification to recognise as Kunbis all blood relatives of the Maratha community members whose Kunbi caste records have been found.
Kunbi, an agrarian community, falls in the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category, and Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange, who spearheads the agitation over the reservation issue, has been demanding Kunbi certificates for all Marathas.

The Ministry of Education has unveiled the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2021-2022, highlighting a substantial rise in female enrolment in higher education.
The data indicates that female enrolment surged to 2.07 crore in 2021-22 from 1.57 crore in 2014-15, marking a notable 32 per cent increase, with over 50 lakh additional female students.
The report also states that the enrolment of Scheduled Caste (SC) students witnessed significant growth, reaching 66.23 lakh in 2021-22 compared to 46.07 lakh in 2014-15, reflecting a remarkable 44 per cent increase.
The overall enrolment in higher education has also experienced an upward trajectory, reaching nearly 4.33 crore in 2021-22 from 4.14 crore in 2020-21.
The enrolment of Scheduled Tribe (ST) students also increased to 27.1 lakh in 2021-22 from 16.41 lakh in 2014-15, showcasing a noteworthy growth of 65.2 per cent.
Additionally, the enrolment of Other Backward Classes (OBC) students rose to 1.63 crore in 2021-22 from 1.13 crore in 2014-15, indicating an impressive increase of 50.8 lakh.
The survey also emphasises the surge in enrolment among Minority students, reaching 30.1 lakh in 2021-22 from 21.8 lakh in 2014-15, reflecting a substantial 38 per cent increase.
Female Minority student enrolment has risen to 15.2 lakh in 2021-22 from 10.7 lakh in 2014-15.
The AISHE report also provides insights into the academic disciplines and levels of enrolment, highlighting that about 78.9 per cent of total students are enrolled in undergraduate-level courses, with the highest enrolment in Arts (34.2 per cent), followed by Science (14.8 per cent), Commerce (13.3 per cent), and Engineering and Technology (11.8 per cent).

Dalit student beaten and injured in Deoband: Four youths abused, surrounded him while returning from school, boiling in Dalit community

In Deoband, four youths abused a Dalit student returning home from school. Using caste based words, they were beaten and injured with sticks and sharp weapons. Many people from Dalit community reached the police station to protest against the incident. The victim’s father lodged a complaint against the accused in the police station.
Rohan, son of Dharamveer, resident of village Isarpur of Deoband area, studies in Puranchand Shastri Inter College in Noorpur. It is said that when Rohan was returning to his home after leave, four youths resident of Noorpur stopped him at the Sugar Mill intersection.
Angered by the incident, victim Rohan’s father Dharamveer along with dozens of people from the Dalit community reached the police station and filed a complaint against the accused. Dalits say that at first the police was not even ready to do the medical examination of the injured student. When many people of the Dalit community under the leadership of BSP leader Majid Ali and Jitendra Bodh reached the police station, the police got the victim student medically examined. Kotwal Dharmendra Gautam said that the case is being investigated on the basis of the complaint and legal action will be taken against whoever is found guilty.

Uproar among cleaning workers in Municipal Corporation: Cleaning workers said – Councilors are putting pressure, asking for money, troubling without any reason.

Sanitation workers created ruckus in Saharanpur Municipal Corporation. The sanitation workers allege that the councilor misbehaves with them and the officials. Accused the councilors of harassing and demanding money. The sanitation workers had a scuffle with the zonal sanitary inspector.
At the same time, in the board meeting held a few days ago, questions and answers were raised by the councilors to the officials regarding the cleanliness system being poor in their respective areas. Teasing of Dalit woman in Fatehpur, on the orders of the court, police registered a case against 7 people, investigation started.

Fatehpur: Action has now been initiated in the case of molestation of a Dalit woman returning from the temple after worshiping in Fatehpur district of Uttar Pradesh. More than half a dozen bullies had assaulted the woman. During this, the accused also looted the gold chain from the woman’s neck. On the orders of the court, the police have started investigating the case by registering a case against 7 people including two real brothers and one unknown person under relevant sections of rebellion, Dalit oppression, robbery etc.
According to the information, Ramshree, 50-year-old wife of Harishankar Sonkar, resident of Koriya village of Bindki Kotwali area, belongs to the Dalit community. It is being told that the woman was returning home after performing puja from the village temple at around 6:00 pm on 12th November 2023. During this time, as soon as the woman reached in front of the house of Virendra Sonkar of the village. At the same time, Vicky Singh along with two real brothers Jatin and Sachin and Surendra Singh alias Laturi, Kailash Singh, Shivsharan alias Pandey resident of Koraiya police station Bindki and 8-10 unknown people targeted the woman.
The woman filed a case
The victim woman has filed a case against the accused in this matter. The victim alleges that all the accused came armed with sticks and pistols and attacked her using caste-related words. Also taunted about going to the temple. Not only this, the woman alleged that she was dragged. She was molested and beaten.
Gold chain also looted
When the woman raised an alarm, some villagers along with her son Subhash Chandra also ran to the spot. Started trying to intervene. The bullies also beat him up and injured him. During this, the accused also snatched the gold necklace from the woman’s neck. While leaving, he threatened using caste based words and said that if he did not agree, he would kill him.
Case registered against 7 including one unknown
On the actions of the bullies, the woman had given a complaint letter to the local police station as well as the SP, demanding action against the accused. It is alleged that the police did not take any action against the bullies. After this the woman took refuge in the court. On the orders of the court, a case has been registered against 7 criminals including an unknown person under various serious sections including Dalit oppression, rioting, robbery etc.

DSP Bindki Sushil Kumar Dubey said that a case has been registered against the accused under SC-ST Act and other relevant sections. The matter is being investigated, further legal action will be taken based on whatever facts emerge.

Five youths gang-raped a 17-year-old girl returning home, she kept pleading for help but her screams were drowned in the noise of the DJ.

The victim had gone to attend a social event, after committing the crime at night, the accused ran away leaving the girl behind, the police arrested all five accused and sent them to jail.
Jashpurnagar. Gangrape: A sensational case of gang rape of a 17-year-old girl has come to light on the night of 25 January in Jashpur district. Five youths chased a girl who was returning home after attending a social event and caught her. Then they picked her up, took her to a nearby field and raped her one by one. The screams of the victim, who was pleading to be freed from the clutches of the accused, were drowned by the noise of the DJ playing in the programme. In the morning, based on the report of the victim, the police arrested the five accused. The police have sent him to jail.
According to information received from police sources regarding the incident, a 17-year-old girl from a village in Jashpur district had gone to attend the DJ party organized near Panchayat Bhawan on the night of 25 January. At night she was returning home after dancing with the DJ. Seeing him returning alone, 5 youths from the village started chasing him and caught him at a deserted place.
It is being told that the girl tried to make noise, but her screams were drowned due to the DJ playing loudly at some distance. During this time, the accused picked her up and took her to a far away field and committed gangrape. After this the accused ran away leaving the victim on the spot.
Report filed in the morning, all 5 accused arrested
The victim came home and informed her family about the incident. She reached the police station with her family in the morning and a report of the incident was lodged. Jashpur SSP D. Ravi Shankar gave instructions to arrest the accused immediately.
On this, the police under the leadership of station in-charge Ambrish Sharma reached the village and raided different places and arrested all the 5 accused.
The police sent the accused to jail under sections 341, 363, 366, 366A, 376 and 4, 6 of the POCSO Act. Police said that the accused and the victim belong to the same village. The accused had also attended the DJ party.

TN farmer assaults Dalit youth, arrested

Chennai, (IANS): A 45-year-old farmer has been arrested on the charges of assaulting a youth, who belongs to Arunthathiyar community, near his coconut grove at Athimagulapulli village in Tamil Nadu.
The arrested farmer is identified as C.Ramesh Babu
Police said that the incident took place on Wednesday when the victim, S. Rajesh (22) who lives in the Arunthathiyar colony in the village along with his friends, had partied on a coconut grove that belongs to Babu who is a farmer.
Ramesh Babu had reached the grove to collect coconuts to transport them to the wholesale market in Vellore when he saw Rajesh and his friends on his farm.
Finding Rajesh and his friends in his coconut grove, Ramesh Babu shouted at them and hurled abuses. This led to a heated argument that led to Ramesh Babu assaulting Rajesh.
Police further said that on hearing the arguments, relatives and neighbours of Babu rushed in support of him and all of them attacked Rajesh.
Based on the alert, Umarabad police came to the spot and took the injured Rajesh to the Government Taluk Hospital in Ambur town.
Rajesh filed a complaint and police registered a case against Babu.
Babu was arrested and lodged in the sub-jail in Tirupattur town.
