“Mesmerising to win EFLU Student Union polls”: Newly elected Dalit President Raghuvardhan

The Student Union elections were held on Wednesday, March 27 with INSAF — Inclusive Students’ Allied Front — emerging victorious for all the posts
Harsha Tallapragada
“It is truly mesmerising,” said the newly elected President of The English and Foreign Languages University Student Union (EFLU SU) Rathod Raghuvardhan.
Recalling the time when a tribal student was denied admission to EFLU, Rathod told EdexLive, “Coming from a Dalit and a tribal community, we face many challenges. Therefore, this victory of a tribal and Dalit student is a significant achievement.”
The Student Union elections were held on Wednesday, March 27 with INSAF — Inclusive Students’ Allied Front — emerging victorious for all the posts. The voting for SU was conducted for various posts of President, Vice-President, General Secretary, Joint Secretary, Cultural Secretary and Sports Secretary.
To recall, EFLU SU elections were last held in 2019.
According to the president representing the INSAF alliance comprising Telangana Students Forum (TSF), Fraternity Movement, National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), Muslim Students Federation (MSF) and PRISM EFLU; INSAF candidates emerged in the first position in all posts. The president won with a majority of 730 votes, added NSUI representative Ibrahim Khan.
The Inclusive Alliance for Social Justice had issued a 21-point manifesto before the elections. It said the alliance’s efforts are directed towards working on students’ concerns like scholarships, SWAYAM courses, mess facilities, opening up of campus spaces, central funds, Non-National Eligibility Test (NET) funds and others.
INSAF manifesto
Here are a few highlights from the manifesto, which EdexLive has access to:
Ensuring students’ representation on the Academic Council
The efficient and smooth running of the CoE (Center of Excellence), DSW (Dean of Student Welfare) and other administrative offices
Address challenges faced by students to enrol in SWAYAM courses and push administration towards subsidisation of registration fees
Tackle the difficulties of Merit-Cum-Means Scholarship (MCM) and National Scholarship Portal (NSP)
24*7 accessibility to library spaces
To ensure that the university provides a comprehensive course handbook
Withdrawal of falsely framed police complaints and show cause notices issued against the students
Working towards the possibility of opening all campus gates 24/7 for increased convenience
President’s plan-of-action
Speaking to EdexLive, the president of the newly elected SU, Rathod said that first and foremost, he would work towards opening up the campus for all. “We have three gates but only Gate 2 is open for the students. Therefore, I will work towards opening up all gates for the students 24*7,” he said, adding that this facility will enable students to have multiple pathways to enter Osmania University (OU) feasibly, buy groceries, receive food delivery packages and others.
Secondly, pursuing SWAYAM courses under National Educational Policy (NEP) is the onus of many students, the INSAF representatives opine. Adding more to this, Rathod claims that every student has to enroll for more than one SWAYAM course, as against NEP’s regulation of one per semester. And each course costs Rs 1,000, he added.
“Therefore, we demand either subsidisation of registration fees or reduction in the number of courses a student should enroll for,” Rathod stressed.
Rathod was also keen on advocating and pushing for 24*7 library hours for the benefit of students. “Now, the library is open from 10 am to 8 pm on weekdays and 10 am to 6 pm on weekends. Therefore, to ensure that students can have access to resources at any time, we demand that the library be open 24*7.”
Another point the manifesto highlights is the ‘Withdrawal of falsely framed police complaints and Show Cause notices issued against the students.’ This pertains to the November 2023 protests against the sexual harassment of a student and the non-functionality of the Gender Sensitisation Committee Against Sexual Harassment (GSCASH), many students were issued show-cause notices along with police detainment.
EFLU is yet to issue a press statement regarding the Student Union.

Gaya College teacher students shine in the film ‘Thaur’: The movie is based on the resistance of Dalit community; Shooting took place in Gaya itself

The film “Thaur”, based on the cunningness of the upper caste community and the resistance of the Dalit community during the elections, is making waves on the YouTube channel – Mitropur Junction these days. The special thing is that all the characters, writers and directors of this film are associated with Gaya College. Some are professors, some are employees and some are students.
Everyone has shown their creative talent very well. The special thing is that the film script is a part of the story which was written by a student of Gaya College and that story came into discussion after it was published in the annual issue of the literary magazine.
Although the language of this film is Hindi, it has a touch of indigenousness of Magahi language. Also songs and music with folk tunes in Magahi tone. Recently, this film was screened in Premchand Auditorium of Gaya College. This film has been directed by Dr. Sridhar Karunanidhi, Assistant Professor, Department of Hindi, Gaya College, Gaya.
The producers of the film are Dr. Abhay Narayan Singh, current Head of the Department of Hindi, Gaya College, Gaya and former Head of the Department and Controller of Examinations, Dr. Anand Kumar Singh. Students and research scholars of South Bihar Central University, Gaya also have important contribution in this film.
The film’s director Dr. Sridhar Karunanidhi says that the entire journey of this film is an example of an exciting experience. No member associated with the production of this film was trained. The idea of film production came when Hindi department student Twinkle Rakshita’s story ‘Kaminiya’ was published and discussed in the special issue of the literary magazine Diwali in 2022.
Due to the Magahi tone, the teachers of the Hindi department liked this story very much and from here the idea of making a film on it also came. Neyajipur village located near Kujapi, Gaya was chosen for its shooting. The villagers there cooperated a lot in this. Apart from this, the location of the hill at Bodhgaya, Sikariya Mor was also used in it.
The farmer’s field located in Neyajipur was used for harvesting. Shooting took place for about 15 days. Then the work of dubbing etc. was completed in the studio of Patna. The entire script of this film, with slight changes from the story of Twinkle Rakshita, focuses on a dynamic woman from a Dalit Bhuiya community.
In the film, Panchayat elections, going to any extent for dominance, the use of money power, shortcomings, the condition of workers, their physical and mental oppression and the cunningness of the Golden Society, its collusion with the administration and its efforts to maintain its dominance. The inter-stories like efforts etc. have been shown effectively through each and every shot of the film.
The resistance of the Dalit community is also recorded in the film. The violence of acid attack on the face has often been used only against women, but in this film a woman carries out an acid attack against a feudal man and his mentality.

Unemployment rate in India doubles among educated youth: Former CEA Kaushik Basu says, ‘Change is coming’

I’m optimistic ordinary people can see this & change is coming,’ said former Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) Kaushik Basu
Sounak Mukhopadhyay
Economist Kaushik Basu has commented on the massive rise of unemployment in India over the last couple of decades. The remarks by the former Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) to the Government of India are about the India Employment Report 2024, published by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the Institute of Human Development (IHD).
Describing it as a “new worry for educated youth in India”, Basu wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Share of those with secondary & more education in total unemployed youth has jumped from 35.2% (2000) to 65.7% (2022). Shows what cronyism & the erosion of trust are doing.”
He added, “I’m optimistic ordinary people can see this & change is coming.”
The report says the share of young people with at least a secondary education among the unemployed has nearly doubled from 35.2% in 2000 to 65.7% in 2022. Also, 83% of the total unemployed people in India are young individuals.
Also, many students leave school after secondary education, especially in less wealthy areas and among disadvantaged groups. Even though more people are going to college, there are still worries about the quality of education. The report indicates significant disparities between what students are taught and what they actually learn in schools and colleges.
On March 27, the Congress accused the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre of trying to “distort, distract, and divert.” The Grand Old Party insisted that unemployment among the youth remains a defining issue to address as the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 approaches.
Rahul Gandhi slams Centre
Rahul Gandhi slammed the BJP-led NDA government after CEA V Anantha Nageswaran commented that the government would not be able to solve all social and economic problems. According to Gandhi, the employment report reveals the “massive failure” of the Narendra Modi government.
“The report says there is a skill gap. We will make freshers a skilled workforce through ‘Pehli Naukri Pakki’. New jobs have to be created, says report – Our ‘Youth Light’ guarantee is bringing ?5,000 crore of support for start-ups,” he said.

Weeks Away From Lok Sabha Polls, Can INDIA Unite Over Kejriwal, Soren Arrests?

While the ground is ripe for a united mass movement, analysts feel it might be too little too late for the opposition bloc.
Rakhi Bose
The arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal ahead of Lok Sabha seemed to galvanise the Opposition leaders into action, giving the fragmenting INDIA alliance bloc an opportunity to find common ground against the ruling BJP. The Aam Aadmi Party chief was “arrested” on March 21 by the Enforcement Directorate amid ongoing investigation into an alleged liquor scam weeks after it arrested JMM leader and Jharkhand chief Hemant Soren on Feb 1 in relation to an alleged land scam.
Soon after Kejriwal’s arrest, Opposition unity was apparent on social media. Congress leaders including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, NCP chief Sharad Pawar, TMC’s Derek O’Brien, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK leader M K Stalin, Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan, RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav, Akhilesh Yadav of Samajwadi Party were among those who slammed the BJP government for using ED and arrests as a pre-poll tactic to “silence” democracy.
This is what top Opposition leaders have said since the arrest:
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said: “To try and tamper with what was supposed to be a level playing field by arresting somebody who is not just a Chief Minister of a state but also a President of an Opposition party in the fray and at the same time to freeze the bank accounts of principal Opposition party, the Congress, this is for us is completely unacceptable. It is an assault on democracy and it reveals the depths to which this BJP govt of PM Modi will sink, they would rather throw our democracy in the gutter than risk losing the election which they’re clearly afraid of losing. This is one more indication of the panic that has set in in the BJP ranks. I urge SC to take suo moto cognizance of the matter.”
Taking to Twitter, Rahul Gandhi called the ruling party a “scared dictator” while others questioned the ED’s move to arrest an Opposition leader ahead of elections when the model code of conduct has already been implemented. “Clearly, the arrest of Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal is linked to elections. Within days of the Lok Sabha polls announcement, you see a sitting CM and an important partner of opposition alliance, has been arbitrarily arrested by ED. His arrest unfortunately is a part of the process whereby the democratic institution of the country has gradually been eroded,” INDIA-bloc partner Jammu Kashmir National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah told media in Srinagar.
DMK chief MK Stalin condemned the “egregious assault” on democracy and the party’s workers have been holding protests in support of Kejriwal. Warning the BJP to get ready to “face the people’s wrath,” the TN CM posted, “Ahead of driven by fear of a decade of failures and the imminent defeat, the Fascist BJP Govt sinks to despicable depths by arresting Delhi CM (Kejriwal), following the unjust targeting of brother Hemant Soren”. He further highlighted how no BJP leaders were “facing any scrutiny” even amid “relentless persecution of opposition leaders,” which “smacks of a desperate desperate witch-hunt”.
“Their futile arrests only fuel our resolve, fortifying the #INDIAalliance’s march to victory,” Stalin added.
NCP stalwart Sharif Pawar also took to Twitter to express his solidarity with Kejriwal: “Strongly condemn the vindictive misuse of central agencies to target the opposition, especially as general elections loom. This arrest showcases the depth to which BJP will stoop for power. ‘INDIA’ stands united against this unconstitutional action against #ArvindKejriwal”
Many of these leaders including Stalin had previously come out in support of Soren. “Thiru Hemant Soren is a blatant display of political vendetta by the Union BJP Govt. Using investigative agencies to harass a tribal leader is a new low,” Stalin had stated.
Will the arrests of Kejriwal and Soren give the INDIA bloc the much needed plank it needs to unite all its ideologically differing alliance partners from across different states?
Can the INDIA bloc capitalise on this issue in time for Lok Sabha elections?
The ground is ripe, feel analysts. Nevertheless, the ground is ripe for a mass movement against the BJP. Coming in the backdrop of the electoral bonds controversy, the arrests have the potential to snowball into an ideological agreement between the various INDIA leaders. Perhaps the INDIA bloc parties can take a few lessons from the past. The 1977 electoral defeat of India Gandhi was the result of the coming together of Opposition parties across strands of ideology or politics for a common cause. The end of the Emergency period which saw several Opposition leaders and governments dissidents were indiscriminately jailed and sanctions placed on media, was followed by the nation’s first national coalition government, made up of five parties, four of which had formed the Janata Party, itself a party forged out of alliance.
Many have indeed likened the current political situation to the Emergency era. Delhi Commission of Women chief Swati Maliwal said, “Arvind Kejriwal arrested, Hemant Soren arrested, Congress Bank Accounts frozen, Election Commissioners resigning, Electoral Bonds scam not being investigated…If this is not a state of emergency, what is?”
“There is, however, a world of qualitative differences between now and then. Politicians may want to use the term ‘Emergency’ or as a slogan but they have to realise that it doesn’t work,” political analyst Rasheed Kidwai stated.
“The acts by Indira Gandhi which were deemed “unconstitutional” or illegal were proven or declared to be so by the country’s laws, intelligentsia and agencies. Gandhi’s own election was set aside by the Allahabad High Court in 1974 which her critics believe may have led to her decision to implement emergency, thereby freezing all democratic channels.
As opposed to that, most of the arrests made under Modi government are backed by law. “The arrests of leaders, even those known to have high integrity like Manish Sisodia, Soren or Kejriwal, are being carried out within the legal framework and the law seems to be against them. Therefore, they are not even able to get bail”.
There is also a shift in the attitudes of media and civil society. Much of mainstream media, which acted at a watchdog capacity in the 70s and publicly resisted censorship, has today become largely polarised and aligned with the party in power. “Moreover, they have shown not just indifference but have been rather adversarial to the Opposition’s cause,” Kidwai adds.
Political scientist Manindra N Thakur states that while the controversy over the arrest might make some of Kejriwal’s voters in Delhi question the ruling party, the on ground situation is not likely to be in favour of INDIA electorally. It would dependson how quickly and effectively the Opposition parties can marshal all their resources and mobilise their individual cadre bases to take to grounds in large numbers. “It is a question of how quickly and unitedly the parties can mobilise their cadres and ensure that their ideas reach the ground,” says political scientist Manindra N Thakur. There is also the question of ironing out ideological differences and rivalries not just at the leadership level but also between workers pf both parties.
Another important aspect, in case of Kejriwal is his own political identity and credibility among his voter bases in Delhi. Thakur, however, feels that it is unlikely as his core voters – the middle class – has been disillusioned with the party due to its apparent fall from moral high ground. A slew of controversies like the Kejriwal house renovation expenses row or the Supreme Court’s denial of bail to Sisodia, have added to loss of credibility for AAP on ground. “AAP’s other voter base which consisted of domestic workers, people with small jobs etc in areas like JJ colony has also been penetrated by the BJP,” he states. In such a scenario, massive on ground mobilisation is unlikely in Delhi.
“The setting is perfect. But the problem is, who will bell the cat? Mallikarjun Kharge, at 83, as Congress President, does not carry that kind of heft. It has to have Sachin Pilot, Priyanka Gandhi, other Opposition leaders to come to the fore and bring things to a standstill, so that the people really see that they are upset,” Kidwai states. The reaction of regional partners will also depend on political aspirations and intent of the regional parties. “The BSP, for instance, is likely to go easy against BJP this time, perhaps in return for an easier run during the assembly elections,” Thakur adds.
