Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya had to leave an election campaign event Sunday after investors who lost money in the multi-crore scam involving the Guru Raghavendra Sahakara Bank Niyamitha – a co-operative bank at Basavangudi in the city – sought answers from the parliamentarian and heckled him.

Depositors, miffed about the delay in compensation for the losses they had suffered, demanded answers from the MP and other leaders like Basavanagudi BJP legislator L A Ravi Subramanya.

Although the leaders tried to pacify the investors, they were unhappy with the responses.

Visuals of the event, organised by the MP at Laxmanrao Imandar auditorium, showed Surya being escorted out of the venue by his security and on his way out, he was seen arguing with a few investors, who walked up to him and questioned him.

Karnataka Congress tweeted a video of the event and took a dig at Surya, saying that he had escaped from the event through an “emergency exit door”.

“Victims who lost money in Guru Raghavendra Co-operative Bank have expressed their anger as Tejasvi Surya did not listen to their grievances even for a day,” the Congress said on X.

The Karnataka Congress has decided to file a complaint against Surya and Subramanya for allegedly instructing “their men to physically handle the depositors and even beat up the election agents who were recording (the event)”.

As the video went viral, Surya’s office released a statement, accusing Congress workers of disrupting the meeting.

“By disrupting BJP meetings and sector-wise community gatherings, Congress is trying desperately to grab headlines for their lacklustre campaign. Making video calls directly to Congress leaders from the scene, Congress workers resorting to pushing and shoving attendees, including senior citizens showing clear disregard for civility, and after all this, they continue to shamelessly distort facts to advance their narrative,” the statement read.

“Congress strategy in Bengaluru South is to create ruckus, confusion, and distract attention from the positive development oriented campaign that we are running,” the statement added.

The alleged Rs 2,500-crore scam came to light in 2020 when the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) imposed withdrawal restrictions on the bank. More than 45,000 depositors had deposited money in the bank and most of them received Rs 5 lakh insurance amount from the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation.

Till date, over 15,000 depositors with deposits exceeding Rs 6 lakh have not been fully compensated. The Enforcement Directorate, which investigated the fraud, had attached the bank’s properties worth Rs 159 crore. The bank management, allegedly in connivance with others, have been accused of syphoning off huge funds.

In December last year, the Karnataka government decided to hand over the probe to the CBI.
