The result of UPSC exam comes once a year and is a big deal. Because its concern is not limited to just numbers and ranks. There are many stories in it. Stories of struggle through which a person cracks the UPSC exam after struggling for years. One such story is that of Pawan Kumar (UPSC Pawan Kumar), whose financial crisis is such that his family does not even have a permanent house to live in.
Pawan Kumar is a resident of Raghunathpur village of Bulandshahr. The house made of thatch and poles that you saw in the video above, belongs to him. Two or three cots are lying on the raw ground in the courtyard of the house. A bursin cutting machine is kept. Two cattle are tied.
Mukul Sharma told in his report that Pawan’s house has electricity but no modern amenities. Pawan’s family consists of his mother, father and three sisters. Father does farming. Mother Suman is a housewife. The eldest sister Goldie has been teaching in a private school since passing her BA. Younger sister Srishti is currently appearing for BA exam. And younger sister Sonia is in class 12.
Regarding Pawan’s early education, his father Mukesh Kumar says,
‘Pawan received his early education from a school in his maternal home, Rupwas Pachgai village. This village is in Bulandshahr itself. Pawan studied in this school from class 1 to class 8. But then he got admission in Navodaya Vidyalaya located in Buklana village in class 9. Where he completed his studies from class 9th to 12th.
Regarding Pawan’s higher education and UPSC preparation, his father says,
‘After passing 12th in the year 2017, Pawan took admission in Allahabad University. From here Pawan passed BA in Geography and Political Science. Then came to Delhi for further preparations. Lived in Mukherjee Nagar, Delhi for two years. And prepared for civil services by taking UPSC coaching. Took the help of internet for coaching of some subjects. After living in Delhi for two years, he came to the village and completed his studies by staying here.
The father further said,
‘All the family members used to work hard and give money to Pawan so that he could continue his studies. The house is thatched. For us the palace is the same and the house is also the same. Even if it rains two drops, the water comes down from the roof. There was no light in the house, so we had to study with the light of the mobile because there was no kerosene to light the lamp.
Mukesh tells an incident related to son Pawan’s phone. They said,
‘An Android smartphone was needed to read Pawan. So all the people collected money for him by working as laborers and then a few years ago, they got him a second hand Android mobile phone worth Rs 3200. For us even these 3200 rupees were equivalent to lakhs. Gas connections were distributed in the district but we don’t even have Rs 1000 to fill our cylinders. Cylinders are not being filled for children’s education. Have to make do with the stove.
The father told that this was Pawan’s third attempt. After the results, there was a crowd of people congratulating him at his house. Pawan’s sister Goldie says that the entire village is happy with Pawan’s success.

BBAU Ambedkar Jayanthi row: “Students initiated violence first,” says Proctor on Dalit students being attacked

The proctor said the university celebrated Ambedkar Jayanti in a grand manner on April 14. However, SFI, BAPSA and AUDSU were seeking permission to celebrate again on April 16 and as a conclusion of the celebrations, wanted to take a shoba yatra with DJ
Dr BR Ambedkar’s birthday is commemorated across India as Ambedkar Jayanti on April 14. Accordingly, Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU), Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh organised an event on the same day. The official notice in this regard read, “Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow is celebrating Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Jayanti & University Foundation Day on 14th April, 2024…All the University fraternity is requested to attend/participate in the programme.”
When the Ambedkar University Dalit Students Union (AUDSU), Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students Association (BAPSA-BBAU) and Students’ Federation of India (SFI) sought permission from the institute to observe the day again on April 16, they were granted permission on short notice.
“According to the university’s code of conduct, the students should seek permission for any event 15 days in advance. However, we accepted their request on short notice keeping in mind their interest,” said the proctor, adding that initially, DJ was not permitted, but later, permission was given for that as well.
The proctor says that when the students approached him to seek permission for the shobha yatra, an altercation escalated into an attack where students allegedly started beating up the security guards and the latter retaliated in their defence. “Students initiated the violence first when they came to submit the letter seeking permission,” the proctor says.
However, according to a joint statement issued by AUDSU, BAPSA-BBAU and SFI, four Dalit students were “brutally attacked by the guards of the university”.
Students claim that they were attacked by the personnel when they visited the proctor near the vice-chancellor’s residence to express disagreement regarding Akhil Bharatiya Vidhya Parishad (ABVP) bringing a sound system inside the campus without any permission to celebrate Ram Navami, on April 17.
Now, what’s this event all about?
Presence of ABVP
Proctor disclosed that followers of Lord Ram and several students celebrated Ram Navami in the varsity on April 17 in a peaceful manner.
Refusing to comment on the allegation of bringing speakers to the campus without permission, a member of ABVP’s cultural wing Rashtriya Kala Manch, Vertika Tiwari, claimed, “We organised a pooja near the temple behind the residential quarters of staff members and it was student-led.”It may be noted that the bringing of speakers without permission was the main bone of contention that the left student groups wanted to bring up with the proctor.
“We strongly oppose the statement issued by AUDSU, SFI and BAPSA. Whatever happened is wrong, unlawful and illegal. Therefore, we demand strong action from the administration,” she told EdexLive.
FIR lodged, students injured
In the statement issued by the SFI, AUDSU and BAPSA, the students claim that one student suffered head injuries and a false First Investigation Report (FIR) was lodged against the four Dalit students.
The affected students of the alleged attack have gathered at the VC residence today, April 19 at 4 pm demanding the “removal of the proctor and security in-charge from their administrative posts and registration of FIR under the SC/ST Act against the guard supervisor and guards who ordered the attack on the Dalit students”, the statement read.
