Karnataka: Dalits get a raw deal in BJP, feel leaders

POSTED ON JUNE 24, 2024

Some Dalits in BJP compare their party’s overtures to Dalits with that of Congress.

Bansy Kalappa

BENGALURU: All parties, including BJP, fight for Dalit votes. But despite supporting the saffron party, many Dalits are asking as to why they are getting a raw deal in the party organisation.

There is discontent among BJP’s Dalit leaders, who worked hard to get votes in Karnataka, despite an onslaught from Congress. But Congress claims to be taking care of its Dalit leaders, the prime example being Mallikarjun Khage, AICC president. Dalit leaders recall that there was panic among Dalit voters ahead of the Lok Sabha polls when BJP ex-MP Ananthkumar Hegde said the party could change the Constitution if it returns to power.

Dalit leaders said, “SCs and STs account for 24-25% of the state’s population, which translates to around 1.5 crore. Around 30% backed BJP. But some of them ask what has the community got despite 40-45 lakh Dalits voting for BJP.”

Some Dalits in BJP compare their party’s overtures to Dalits with that of Congress. They point out that the present Congress government has six Dalit ministers — Dr G Parameshwara, Dr HC Mahadevappa, KH Muniyappa, Priyank Kharge, RB Timmapur and Shivaraj Thangadagi. Until recently, the Siddaramaiah ministry had three Scheduled Tribe ministers in Satish Jarkiholi, KN Rajanna and B Nagendra, who quit recently. But during the previous BJP government, only Govind Karjol and Prabhu Chavan, who are SCs, and B Sriramulu, an ST, were ministers.

They said, “We were expecting Dalit leaders from Karnataka — seven-time MP Ramesh Jigajinagi and former DCM Govind Karjol, who is a first-time MP — to get ministerial berths in the Union cabinet, but they got nothing.” They said they cannot understand the state party unit’s obsession with upper castes — Lingayats and Vokkaligas.

The party president is a Lingayat, the Assembly Opposition leader is a Vokkaliga, and the post of LoP in the Council, which was till now occupied by a backward class, is now going to CT Ravi, a Vokkaliga. “Till the party convinces Dalits that it is not obsessed with upper castes, how will it reach the magic mark of 113 seats in Karnataka on its own,” they asked.

BJP has not managed to cross the halfway mark in any Assembly election, even when it was the single-largest party in 2008 and 2018.

Some Dalit leaders pointed out that in the Lok Sabha election, BJP lost Gulbarga (SC), Chamarajanagar (SC), Raichur (ST) and Bellary (ST) to Congress. “This proves that we are not able to convince Dalit voters. Remember, the same voters had elected BJP in 2019,” they added.

The anti-Dalit face of the government of deliberately depriving the reserved category of adequate reservation in HCS recruitment has been exposed

POSTED ON JUNE 24, 2024

Various organizations expressed anger over not giving proper reservation to SC BC in HCS recruitment – demanded high level investigation in the matter. There is a serious matter of gross neglect of reservation policy in HCS recruitment process 2023

In the serious matter of open violation of constitutional rights by depriving the Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes of reservation in the result of HCS declared by Haryana Public Service Commission on June 14, 2024, a protest meeting was organized by various organizations at Guru Ravidas Temple under the aegis of Sarva Scheduled Caste Sangharsh Samiti under the joint chairmanship of Saini Sabha President Bishan Kumar Saini, National Organization Secretary and former President of Rashtriya Kumhar Mahasabha Kishanlal Luhaniwal and Guru Ravidas Mahasabha President Balbir Singh Baberwal. In the meeting, all the organizations expressed their anger and strongly condemned the government and sent a joint signed letter in this matter to the President, National Scheduled Caste Commission, Governor, Chief Minister and Chief Secretary of Haryana Government demanding that a high level in-depth investigation of this serious matter be conducted and strict action be taken against the guilty officers.

In the meeting, strong slogans were raised while demonstrating anger against the government. While conducting the meeting, General Secretary of Sangharsh Samiti and Chief Advisor of Kabir Samajik Utthan Sanstha Delhi, Birdi Chand Gothwal, while giving detailed information in the matter, said that in the HCS recruitments done by the government from the year 2019 to 2024, the government has openly violated the constitutional rights by ignoring proper reservation to the youth of Scheduled Caste and Backward Classes. In the HCS recruitment process 2022, out of the 20 reserved posts for the Scheduled Castes, only 06 youths were called for interview, whereas as per three times of 20, 60 youths should have been called, but instead of doing so, only 06 youths were selected and the remaining 14 posts were left vacant. The same situation was repeated by the government in the HCS recruitment process 2023 as well, in which out of the 31 reserved posts for the Scheduled Castes, only 22 youths were called for interview, whereas as per three times of 31, 93 youths should have been called. Here it is surprising that out of 31 posts, the government recruited only 22 posts and left 09 posts vacant. At the same time, in the backward class also, only 19 youths of the reserved category were called for interview, whereas as per the rules, three times more should be called. In this way, only 19 youths of the backward class were recruited, which is a blatant violation of reservation. Chandan Singh Jalwan, head of Sarva Anu Jati Sangharsh Samiti, Dr. Shivtaj Singh, vice-president and former principal of Haryana Awaaz Foundation, Anil Phandan, head of Haryana Pradesh Chamar Mahasabha etc. criticised the government in their joint statement and said that from the above facts it is evident that only those SC/BC youths who had a setting or were favourites of the government were called for interview and recruited in HCS and the rest of the youths were left to wander from door to door, which automatically exposes the casteist and anti-reservation ill-will of the government, which is a serious matter. It is worth mentioning here that instead of filling all the seats of the reserved category, some seats have been left vacant and they are later filled from the general category as a part of a well-planned strategy, but it is worth mentioning and regretting here that till date no seat of the general category has ever been left vacant. The youth and various organizations of the reserved category have been making the government aware of these irregularities, but despite this, the government is adamant on its discrimination-ridden stubbornness, which is not justified. In anger, Vice President of All India Reservation Bachao Sangharsh Samiti and former Tehsildar Lalaram Nahar said that in this matter, a case has also been filed in the Hon’ble High Court in the last period by CWP No. 10749 of 2023 Satish Kumar vs Haryana Government and others. There is great anger in all SC and BC society of Haryana due to this malicious anti-reservation and anti-constitution working style of the government and all Bahujan organizations strongly condemn this impractical working style of the government and also warn the government that the government should stop anti-reservation discrimination and take strict action against the guilty officers so that such irregularities are not repeated in future. In the event of not getting justice, all the Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes of Haryana will be forced to make a strategy of protest, demonstration and dharna etc.

On this occasion, President of Dharamshala Khatik Sabha Dr. Satvir Singh Chauhan, Shivnarayan Morwal of Dhanak Samaj, State Auditor of Ravidas and Ambedkar Mahasabha Federation Ramkumar Dhainwal, Head and Principal of Empowerment Amar Singh Nimhoria, Vice President of Sangharsh Samiti and Rajesh Chawriya of Valmiki Sabha, Head of Dr. Ambedkar Jan Jagruti Manch Jaswant Bhati, Head of Block Ateli Prabhu Dayal and Treasurer Dayanand Sanwaria, Head of Dr. Ambedkar Youth Committee Anil Mahayach, General Secretary Mainpal Mahayach, Legal Advisor and Advocate of Bar Association Gajanand Dochaniya, Pyarelal Chavan of Kabir Samajik Utthan Sanstha Delhi, Secretary of Samajik Parivartan Sangh Sumer Singh Gothwal, General Secretary of Haryana Pradesh Chamar Mahasabha Gurdayal Singh Nahar, Ramchandra Gothwal, former Manager Jaipal Singh, former Chief Manager Madanlal Dadaiya and Vijay Siroha, former Vigilance Inspector Atar Singh Khinchi, former Head RC Grover, Hariram Siroha, Secretary Hazarilal Khatawala, Amarnath Siroha, Ramniwas, Kartar Singh Jaidia of Valmiki community, Rajendra Singh Jalwan, Kanhaiyalal Kaloria, Syotaj Singh Kothalkhurd, Mamanram, Nambardar Sadhuram, Balbir Singh, Advocate Subhash Comrade, Mohanlal and many other dignitaries were present.

Mahayuti needs to accommodate Dalits, minorities to win assembly polls, says Athawale

POSTED ON JUNE 23, 2024

Mumbai, Jun 22 (PTI) Union minister Ramdas Athawale on Saturday advised the ruling ‘Mahayuti’ alliance in Maharashtra to accommodate Dalits and minorities to win the assembly elections.

Talking to reporters here, Athawale said his Republican Party of India (Athawale) would seek eight to ten seats for the state polls due in October. Maharashtra has 288 assembly seats.

The ruling alliance comprises the BJP, Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and NCP headed by Ajit Pawar.

“We also want one MLC seat in the biennial elections to the legislative council scheduled next month,” he said.

In the proposed cabinet expansion in the state, RPI (A) should get a ministerial berth, the Dalit leader said.

Athawale said Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had assured him that his demands would be considered. “I hope he seriously considers our demands,” he said.

Athawale, who was retained as a minister of state in the third term of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said he expected a Cabinet berth, but many other allies also needed to be accommodated.

“Being a minister at the Centre for the last eight years, I have been able to expand my party elsewhere in the country,” he said.

Athawale said he wanted his party to contest from Shirdi and Solapur in the Lok Sabha polls but the BJP did not consider their request.

“We (BJP-led NDA) expected 40 seats (in Maharashtra) but got 17 in the Lok Sabha elections,” he said.

He said the opposition’s narrative that the BJP would change the Constitution if it got over 400 seats misled Dalit voters, referring to the NDA’s subpar performance in the general elections.

There is not much difference between the vote shares of the opposition bloc Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) and Mahayuti, he said.

“Dalits and minorities need to be brought into the fold of Mahayuti to win assembly polls. I will put this point in the meeting of Mahayuti leaders,” he said, stressing that the ruling alliance can win the polls if there is unity.

He said Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar had the backing of most MLAs, hence the Election Commission ruled their groups as real Shiv Sena and NCP, respectively.

Maratha and OBC quotas, which are currently under the spotlight, are important issues, said the RPI (A) head, adding that Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange should be invited to the all-party meeting next week.

He also rued that his efforts for Dalit unity had not succeeded. “If Prakash Ambedkar of Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) agrees, I am ready to work under him,” he said. PTI MR NR

MP: Dalit Family’s Hut Demolished Amid Bribery, Immoral Demand Allegations

POSTED ON JUNE 23, 2024

Woman claims hut demolished over refusal to pay Rs. 2 lakh bribe. She alleged that the sarpanch and district panchayat member threatened them with eviction and used casteist slurs. Despite reporting the issue to local authorities, no action was taken to prevent the demolition.

Jaiprakash Telkar

Pipaliya Station (Madhya Pradesh): A Dalit woman from Kangatti village of Malhargar tehsil in Mandsaur district has accused the village authorities of demolishing her hut and imprisoning her husband over refusal to pay a Rs 2 lakh bribe and rejecting immoral demands.

Karibai, the complainant, stated that she and her husband, Dashrath Bawari, have been living below the poverty line with their five daughters in a hut on Malhargarh Road for the past 20 years. She alleged that the sarpanch and district panchayat member threatened them with eviction and used casteist slurs. Despite reporting the issue to local authorities, no action was taken to prevent the demolition.

Meanwhile, the sarpanch and the district panchayat member dismissed the allegations as false, stating that the demolition was a result of an order to remove illegal encroachments, issued eight months prior due to complaints from the villagers. They assert that the location is intended for a Saraswati Shishu Mandir and that Dashrath Bawari had encroached on multiple government properties.

Farmer leader condemns action

Farmer leader Shyamlal Jokchand criticised the government’s actions, stating that the administration’s claims of supporting the poor and farmers are hollow. He alleged that the authorities selectively target the poor, while ignoring encroachments by influential individuals. Jokchand demanded that the Chief Minister take action against the officials responsible for demolishing the labourer’s hut.

Husband jailed

Pipaliyamandi police station in-charge Neeraj Sarwan confirmed that the tehsildar’s team removed the encroachment on Thursday and upon receiving a complaint, the police arrested Dashrath Bawari under section 151, subsequently presenting him in tehsil court and sending him to jail. Attempts to contact Malhargarh tehsildar Brajesh Malviya were unsuccessful.

SGPC Files Complaint Against Dalit Woman for Yoga at Golden Temple.
SGPC Files Complaint Against Dalit Woman for Yoga at Golden Temple

Amritsar: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has lodged a complaint against a Dalit woman for performing Yoga inside the premises of Sri Darbar Sahib, also known as the Golden Temple, located in Amritsar. This action follows the circulation of visuals on social media showing the Instagram influencer practicing Yoga at Sri Darbar Sahib Prakrama on International Yoga Day, June 21.

SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami expressed strong disapproval, emphasizing that such actions contravene the sanctity of Guru Mati at Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib. He lamented that despite the historical significance and sacredness of the place, some individuals disregard these aspects and engage in inappropriate behavior.

Dhami disclosed that the Sikh community felt deeply offended by the conduct of Archana Makwana, the Dalit woman in question, leading to the filing of a formal complaint against her. He noted that Makwana had already issued an apology for her actions, urging against behaviors that necessitate subsequent apologies.

In response to the incident, Sri Darbar Sahib's General Manager Bhagwant Singh Dhangera confirmed that CCTV footage was reviewed to verify the incident after images surfaced on social media. The footage revealed that Makwana had assumed a Yoga pose for a brief period of approximately 5 seconds within the premises.

Consequently, disciplinary measures have been initiated against three employees—Gaganpal Singh, Harjinder Singh, and Palwinder Singh—accused of neglecting their duties. Two employees have been suspended, while one has been fined ₹5,000 and transferred to Gurdwara Garhi Sahib Gurdas Nangal.

Dhangera emphasized that the conduct of the woman had deeply hurt Sikh sentiments, prompting the SGPC to lodge a police complaint against her. Makwana has since removed the photos and videos from her Instagram account. The incident has sparked controversy and raised concerns about maintaining the sanctity of religious places and respecting community sentiments.

Yoga is banned inside Golden temple premises. Here's a video of MusIims performing Namaz there. So Namaz is acceptable? And Yoga is unacceptable? SGPC is openly promoting hatred towards Hindus & working on the ISI agenda... They openly promote KhaIistan movement as well.

CPM's first tribal minister to take oath today; Radhakrishnan rejects row over Devaswom portfolio

Thiruvananthapuram: CPM MLA OR Kelu will take oath as a minister in the Pinarayi Vijayan cabinet on Sunday evening at a special ceremony in Raj Bhavan. He will  replace newly elected MP K Radhakrishnan in the cabinet. Though CPM is getting its first tribal minister, the LDF government has come under fire for not giving devaswom portfolio to Kelu.

The Wayanad MLA is likely to get the portfolio of Welfare of Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castres and Backward Classes. Parliamentary affairs and Devaswom portfolios, handled previously by Radhakrishnan, have been assigned to ministers MB Rajesh and V N Vasavan, respectively. The LDF government's decision had triggered heated debates alleging caste discrimination in the portfolio allocation.

Radhakrishnan on Sunday justified the Left Democratic Front's (LDF) decision and argued that priority should be given to the entry of a minister from tribal community to the cabinet. Radhakrishnan had resigned as a minister for Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, Parliamentary Affairs and Devaswom after being elected to the Lok Sabha from the Alathur constituency.

Talking to a Manorama News, Radhakrishnan said: "It is for the first time that a person belonging to the tribal community is becoming a minister. We should see that merit first," he said.

He also said there might be differences in the portfolio but what is more important is that he could become a minister from Wayanad. Radhakrishnan said newcomers should become capable of handling the portfolios assigned to them and the present portfolio is entrusted with Kelu with an expectation that he would handle it well.

The 54-year-old CPM leader from a tribal community in Wayanad, Kelu was recently recommended by the CPM state committee to be inducted as a minister in the LDF cabinet. He is the second tribal minister in Kerala; PK Jayalakshmi in Oommen Chandy's cabinet holds the credit of being the first minister from tribal community. Although there is a clear indication that Kelu will get the portfolio of Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, sources said there would be a minor shuffle in the portfolios previously held by Radhakrishnan. The Congress-led opposition UDF on Saturday said it was a wrong decision on the part of the LDF government to not give the Devaswom portfolio to Kelu.

Leader of Opposition in the Assembly VD Satheesan said Chief Minister Vijayan, who rightly opposed the non-appointment of Congress MP Kodikunnil Suresh as pro-tem Speaker in the Lok Sabha, took a different stand when it came to Kelu. "That is a wrong decision. The state government showed the same attitude in Kelu's case as the Centre did when it did not make Suresh, the senior most MP in the Lok Sabha, the pro-tem Speaker," he said.
