Dalit prisoner’s death case: His friend who was released from jail told how he died, will be investigated by magistrate

POSTED ON JUNE 28, 2024

A Dalit youth who was caught on the charge of bike theft in Firozabad died in the district jail. There was a lot of uproar in this case. Many leaders also cornered the government on this. Now in this case, the deceased’s friend has made a big disclosure.

Firozabad: A new twist has come in the case of the death of a Dalit prisoner in the jail on 21st June in the district. The other prisoner who went to jail with the deceased alleges that he was tortured in the district jail for not paying the dues. The deceased’s friend also claimed that the deceased himself had told him this and he was also trying to get his barrack changed. However, the jail administration claims that the investigation going on in this case will reveal everything.

Let us tell you that on 21st June, Dalit youth Akash son of Veeri Singh resident of Nagla Pachiya police station South, who was lodged in the district jail, died. Akash was arrested on June 18 for bike theft. The jail administration claimed that Akash suddenly had stomach pain. He was sent to the district hospital where he died. People angry with this incident created a ruckus. The family members alleged that Akash died due to beating. The family members blocked the road. The protesters clashed with the police who went to clear the jam. Many people were injured in the case of stone pelting, firing and arson.

The administration pacified the matter by giving a cheque of Rs 5 lakh. A case has also been registered against 117 people for creating a ruckus. A new twist came in this case when the post-mortem report confirmed that Akash had 14 injury marks on his body. He had head injury and injury marks below the eye, neck and shoulder. After the post-mortem report, the father has once again alleged that his son has been murdered. Strict action should be taken against the guilty policemen. This case took another turn when Aakash’s friend Shivam, who was released from jail, claimed that Aakash died due to beating and he was beaten in jail. Aakash was being pressurized for hard work. When he did not give money, he was beaten. Shivam also told that Aakash himself told him this the next day. Aakash was very upset and was demanding to change the barrack. Now the police is also in a defensive position. The jail officials are avoiding saying anything directly. Jail Superintendent A.K. Singh says that everything will be clear after the magisterial inquiry of this case.

About Ramdas Athawale Bandu

Who is Ramdas Athawale Bandu?

Known for his unique sense of humour and unorthodox style of giving media bytes, Ramdas Athawale Bandu is quite a popular figure in Indian politics. Born in 1959, Athawale is President of the Republican Party of India (Athawale), which has a limited presence in Maharashtra and is popular among a section of the state's Buddhist Dalits. In the past, the Sangli-born politician has even donned the hat of trade unionist, social activist, editor, and even that of an actor as well. He shot to massive fame when a video of him chanting "Go Corona. Corona Go..." went viral on social media in 2020.

Presently, in 2024, Athawale is a Rajya Sabha MP from Maharashtra and MoS for Social Justice and Empowerment.

Early Life
Athawale, who did his undergrad from Maharashtra, was born in a Dalit family and is a Buddhist practitioner. He is a staunch supporter of Dr BR Ambedkar. Before getting into full-time politics, Athawale was an editor of a weekly magazine and has played roles in several Marathi films.

Political Career
Athawale's career kickstarted when he joined the Dalit Panthers' movement in the seventies. However, it was only in 1990, when the Dalit leader became a member of Maharashtra Legislative Council. In the nineties, he also became a Cabinet minister in the Maharashtra govt.

Athawale has sided with both Congress-led UPA and BJP-led NDA in his decades-long political career.

In 1998, he first became an LS MP from Mumbai North Central constituency. Then he won two back-to-back terms (1999 and 2004) from the erstwhile Pandharpur constituency in Maharashtra. During this period, he was in an alliance with the Congress-led UPA.

However, in 2011, he broke his alliance with the UPA and joined hands with the NDA.

In 2014, he was elected to Rajya Sabha with BJP's support and then in 2016, he was made MoS for Social Justice and Empowerment. Since then, he has remained an MoS with the same portfolio. Notably, in 2020, he was re-elected to Rajya Sabha unopposed from Maharashtra.

Athawale is quite vocal about Dalit rights and never minces words when speaking on any Dalit atrocity incident.

The collective consciousness of India now is Ambedkarism

in India

ambedkar dalit

The recently viral video of opposition candidates greeting with the slogan of “Jai Bhim” or mentioning Ambedkar, the Constitution or Samvidhan, while taking oath as Member of Parliament, has clearly indicated a transition in the outlook towards Ambedkar, his followers and at large the principles and values Ambedkar stood for. These leaders also held a copy of the Indian Constitution in their hands while taking the oath. ‘Jai Bhim’ is a symbol of struggle, it is synonymous with cultural and political identity, while it also indicates affiliation with the Ambedkarite movement.

L R Balley[1] in one of his interviews states “When I started working in 1956, it was too risky to take Dr Ambedkar’s name…Those were the years we were not allowed to organise meetings. That is our success that we have pushed Ambedkar so much that even the opponents are shouting the slogan of Ambedkar.”

The Prime Minister, has tried his best to win over Dalit (Ambedkarties) voters by mentioning Ambedkar at several instances, using the “Jai Bhim” slogan often, assuring people that his party won’t change the constitution while trying to honour Ambedkar at various other instances. But strangely, people are not convinced. Neither with his words nor actions. Thanks to speeches and actions by members of his party fraternity.

On 2 October 2014, Prime Minister launched Swachh Bharat Mission, a program with prime focus on cleanliness and sanitation along with building toilets across India. It was a restructured version of the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan which was launched by the earlier government. The program was launched at Raj Ghat, on Gandhi’s anniversary and also had its logo as the signature spectacle of Gandhi. Apart from this, it has no relationship with Gandhian ideology. While Gandhi was known for cleanliness and cleaning his own toilet, globally he is the mascot for peace and non-violence. This program reduced Gandhi’s stature among the new voters and youngsters who rarely read history in depth. The Prime Minster does mention Gandhi, but rarely speaks on Gandhian ideology, he does the same with Ambedkar. The ruling establishment has its best interest in the deification of Ambedkar, covertly ignoring his ideology, principles and values.

The collective opposition, except leaders from the largest party, rarely mention Gandhi in their speeches. This was not the case decades ago. Gandhi was the unofficial mascot of India. India was known to be the land of Buddha and Gandhi, both stood for peace and non-violence. The general public discourse used to be on the lines that India has never invaded any country in its history, though this argument can be debated. Historians criticised but also glorified Gandhi, but never made him a deity. The other notable point is that Gandhi never had any ‘community’ backing to make him a deity.

Ambedkar and his most celebrated work, the Constitution of India, has taken over the discourse these days. It started with Chandrashekar Azad carrying a copy of the Constitution at Jama Masjid during the CAA NRC protests, and later various others picked up. Rahul Gandhi walked, in tune to Mahatma Gandhi’s Dandi march, across India but spoke more on Ambedkar and Constitution. It was a perfect example of how the two leaders are essential and can coexist ideologically. Nowadays, all protests we see have a blue flag or a copy of the Constitution.

In the recently held General Elections one can say with confidence that there was not a single constituency in India that didn’t have a candidate who did not talk of Ambedkar or had a blue flag bearer in his campaign. An election campaign without Ambedkar is incomplete. It’s a political, social, and cultural compulsion on all political leaders to refer Ambedkar. While their personal views and actions may be diametrically opposite.

Protest songs, raps, and revolutionary songs from the marginalised or leftist thoughts refer to the Constitution or Ambedkar. They use the blue flags, images of Ambedkar or the Constitution in abundance. Even movies have started having subtle references to Ambedkar or the signature blue flag of Ambedkarite movement. Movies that earlier referred class (to be understood as caste), now openly bring in caste. The OTT platform has been more direct and hard-hitting.

The Dalits were the early adopters of blue flag (read Ambedkarism) which was later picked up by the Adivasis. The blue flag started to coexist with the red (left) flag, slowly overpowering it. The blue flag arrived as a sign of protest in the constitutional framework, not as revolution, not as revolt, not as rebel. The blue flag demanded the rights to be ensured as per law. The Muslims, a natural ally of the marginalised, also joined hands and now their political leaders ensure blue flags at their rallies and events. The OBC’s and other communities use the blue flag to seek reservations (again in the framework of the Constitution) and other benefits. Womens’ rights movements have no flag as such, blue becomes their comfort zone.

Ambedkar, the Constitution and the blue flag have arrived. This trio is now the new tri-murti of India. Its power is here to stay for long, can’t fade in our lifetime, yet we should ensure that this trishakti retains its supremacy over the collective consciousness of India.

A recent report from World Inequality Lab titled, ‘Towards Tax Justice and Wealth Redistribution in India’, has laid bare the stark economic disparities that plague India. The findings are sobering: nearly 90 per cent of the country’s billionaire wealth is concentrated in the hands of the upper castes, highlighting a deep socio-economic divide.

Billionaire wealth dominated by upper castes

The analysis in the report unveils a staggering 88.4 per cent of India’s billionaire wealth is controlled by upper castes. In contrast, while Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) together form a significant part of India’s workforce, their representation among enterprise owners remains disproportionately low.

This discrepancy is not limited to the billionaires; the All-India Debt and Investment Survey (AIDIS) for 2018-19 indicates that upper castes hold nearly 55 per cent of the national wealth. This concentration of wealth also highlights the persistent economic inequalities rooted in India’s caste system.

Caste influences financial demographics

Caste continues to play a critical role in determining access to essential resources such as education, healthcare, social networks, and credit — all crucial for entrepreneurship and wealth creation. Historically, Dalits faced prohibitions on land ownership in many regions, severely curtailing their economic progress.
This disparity extends beyond billionaire rankings. The ‘State of Working India, 2023’ report from Azim Premji University further highlights these disparities, showing SCs and STs are underrepresented among enterprise owners relative to their workforce participation. SCs, comprising 19.3 per cent of the workforce, account for only 11.4 per cent of enterprise owners. Similarly, STs, making up 10.1 per cent of the workforce, represent just 5.4 per cent of enterprise owners.

TN Dalit man beheaded for relationship with woman from different SC community

In a brutal caste killing reported in Madurai district, a man from the Arunthathiyar community was beheaded for his relationship with a woman from the Devandra Kulla Vellalar community. Both communities are categorised as Scheduled Caste (SC). However, Devandra Kulla Vellalars believe that they rank ‘higher’ in the caste hierarchy than Arunthathiyars. The victim, Azhagendran, was in his early twenties and had reportedly been in a relationship with Rudrapriya. He was stripped, beheaded and his body left in the undergrowth near Kalligudi town.

Madurai district Superintendent of Police (SP) Arvind told TNM that Azhagendran’s body was not discovered until Thursday, June 27. The victim’s head was found buried separately in the bank of an irrigation tank nearby.

The SP also said that the couple lived in Virudhunagar district with their families, but the murder was committed in Madurai district where Azhagendran hailed from. One person, identified as Prabakaran, has been taken into custody and is under interrogation. Rudrapriya’s father, Seenivasan, is on the run. Both Seenivasan and Prabakaran have previous cases against them in Virudhunagar, the SP added.

However, when asked about these previous cases, TNM was directed to the Virudhunagar police. When TNM reached out to Virudhunagar SP Feroze Khan Abdullah, he said that the case is being handled by the Madurai police and declined to provide details.

It is also unclear whether Rudrapriya is in a safe location or still with her family, as both the Madurai and Virudhunagar SPs claimed that they do not have any information regarding this.

Activists who alerted TNM to the case said that Rudrapriya’s family had threatened to murder Azhagendran if she did not call off the relationship. They further alleged that her family had used casteist slurs on Azhagendran and tried to break the couple up, claiming their "honour" would be lost if Rudrapriya married Azhagendran, who was from a "lower" caste.

Activists also allege that Rudrapriya and Azhagendran tried to get married at a Murugan temple in Thiruparankundram (Madurai district) on June 24 but Rudrapriya’s family arrived, physically assaulted Azhagendran and abducted her from the spot.

The term ‘Devendra Kulla Vellalars’ has only come into official use recently. According to Puthiya Tamilagam party chief Krishnasamy, who has been demanding to delist the community as SC and instead include them in the Other Backward Class (OBC) list, Devendra Kula Vellalars are traditionally a wetland farming community. Claiming that the Dalit identity was ‘imposed’ on them, he argues that they are descendants of the Cheras, Cholas and Pandyas.

In 2021, ahead of the Assembly elections, the Union government agreed to the demands of seven castes–Devendrakulathan, Kudumban, Pannadi, Kaalaadi, Kadayar, Pallar and Pathariar–to recognise them under the umbrella name of Devendra Kulla Vellalars instead. BJP leader L Murugan’s elevation to Cabinet in the same year was then seen as an attempt to woo the community.

Read: PM Modi announces that Centre has accepted Devendra Kula Vellalars's demands

Earlier in 2019, Krishnasamy had led a movement demanding for the community to be removed from the Scheduled Caste list. However, the movement did not gain any momentum as several from the community disapproved of this stance since they continue to be socially and economically marginalised based on caste.

It is also worth noting that a people’s draft Bill to end ‘honour’ killings was submitted to Chief Minister MK Stalin almost a year ago. The Bill was drafted by the Dalit Human Rights Defenders Network under the leadership of A Kathir, the founder-director of the well-known Madurai-based Dalit rights organisation Evidence. The Bill seeks to close the gap in existing special laws by ensuring “justice, compensation and rehabilitation in crimes committed in the name of honour vis a vis caste, faith, age, gender, sexual orientation, language, class, race, status and tradition”.

However, on June 25, Stalin said in Assembly that, “As I’ve mentioned before, we believe it is better to conduct investigations correctly and bring perpetrators to justice using the existing laws rather than bring in any new legislation.”
