Director Pa Ranjith holds rally seeking justice for K Armstrong’s murder in Chennai

POSTED ON JULY 22, 2024

Pa Ranjith pointed out that those elected in MLA and MP seats via reservation have not spoken up on Dalit issues in the state and added that he will protest if they were to continue their silence.

Written by:Nidharshana Raju

Director Pa Ranjith’s Neelam Cultural Centre held a ‘Rally for Justice’ in Chennai’s Egmore, on Saturday, July 20, seeking justice for late Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Tamil Nadu President K Armstrong’s murder. Over a thousand people holding banners that read, “We don’t want police encounter, we want justice” and “Dalit lives matter” marched from Langs Garden road to Rajarathinam stadium in Egmore.

Armstrong was murdered by a group of assailants outside his place of residence in Perambur, on July 4. Hours after his murder, 11 men surrendered to the police. Based on their confessions the police said that the murder could have been retaliatory on the part of late Arcot Suresh’s gang since close aides of Arcot Suresh, who was murdered in 2023, believed that Armstrong had had a part to play in the 2023 murder. Later, on July 14, the city police also killed Thiruvengadan, one of the 11 assailants in an encounter.

“Armstrong Anna (brother) was a powerful leader in Chennai city. Both politically and among the people in his community. There is a big conspiracy behind his murder. The police should investigate the case from all angles and find the real culprits,” Pa Ranjith said at the rally.

He further accused the Dalit MLAs and MPs from the state’s parties including the DMK, AIADMK and the CPI(M) of not having spoken about the issues that the Dalit community is facing in the state. “If those elected by reservation in MLA, MP seats including the Mayor’s seat, don’t speak up for Dalit issues, we will protest. How long will you disappoint us?” he asked.

Participants including Chennai-based writer and activist Shalin Maria Lawrance demanded a CBI enquiry. “The ruling DMK fought tooth and nail with Armstrong in the Kolathur and Perambur areas. So, how can we accept their investigation in this matter? It is the moral and ethical responsibility of the DMK to transfer this case to the CBI considering that he is an opposition leader. But the DMK is instead calling him a ‘rowdy’. At the end of the day, as a state president of a national party, his murder case deserves a CBI enquiry,” she said.

TNM met students who had travelled from other parts of Tamil Nadu to attend the rally. Vineeth, one such student,  who was helped by K Armstrong to pursue his education, had travelled from Bengaluru to attend the rally. “We Dalits don’t get justice if we go to the police. We are beaten up. We need to protest for justice. That is the hard truth and that is why I am here today. That is why many of us have travelled to Chennai today. To protest for one among us who was brutally killed because an attack on him is an attack on the community,” he told TNM.

BSP, Indian Republic party, Samuga Samathuva Padai and Puratchi Bharatham’s cadres, May 17 Movement, Tamil Civil rights organisation, Vyasai Thozhargal, a Non-Government Organisation (NGO) based in North Chennai’s Vyasarpadi along with common public were in attendance. Actors Mansoor Ali Khan and Attakathi Dinesh were also present at the rally.

The bitter truth of the ‘Gujarat Model’… Dalit was beaten up for wearing sunglasses! – Even earlier, Dalit youths have been beaten up for wearing good clothes…sitting on a horse.

POSTED ON JULY 22, 2024

The Gujarat model has been completely exposed. Now a bitter truth of this has come to the fore. Dalits are treated very badly there. Another incident of caste-based violence has come to light there. A Dalit youth was allegedly beaten up by so-called upper caste people in the Sabarkantha district of the state for uploading his picture wearing a traditional turban and sunglasses on his social media account.

This is not the first incident of a Dalit being beaten up for wearing sunglasses. Such an incident has happened last year as well.

According to the information received, in the month of June 2023, a 21-year-old Dalit youth and his family were attacked by upper caste people for wearing sunglasses and good clothes.

Attackers abscond after beating Dalit

On July 17, a 24-year-old Dalit youth was beaten up in a village in Himmatnagar taluka of Sabarkantha district. His crime was that he was wearing a turban on his head and sunglasses on his eyes. The police have registered an FIR in this case, but all the attackers have fled from the village.

Let us tell you that the victim Ajay Parmar drives a three-wheeler. In the FIR lodged by him on July 18, it is said that he was beaten up by four people of the Darbar community. According to the report, the accused allegedly beat him near the Navanagar bus stand for putting his photo wearing sunglasses and a turban as DP on his Instagram account.

Ajay told the media, ‘They told me that only people of the Darbar community can wear turban and sunglasses. They beat me up and asked me to remove the photo.’ He told that later people in his village also slapped him for the same reason. According to the report, the victim’s family is the only Dalit family living among the Darbar community in that village.

Four accused have been named in the FIR. Victim Ajay Parmar said that his father called the local police to save him from the attackers, but the police arrived at the spot after an hour. The report quoted Sanjay Goswami, Deputy Police Inspector of Himmatnagar Rural Police Station, as saying that the accused have fled from the village and the police are investigating the matter.

Earlier in November 2023, a 21-year-old Dalit youth was attacked in Gujarat for demanding his salary from his employer. The youth had said in his police complaint that he was made to apologize by holding the shoes of his female employer in his mouth. In February this year, a Dalit groom was attacked by four people in Gandhinagar district because he came on a horse in his wedding procession.

Four get 10-yr jail term for torturing, killing newlywed Dalit man

POSTED ON JULY 22, 2024

Agra: A special SC/ST court in Mathura has sentenced four individuals to life imprisonment for torturing and murdering a Dalit man just seven days after his marriage due to an old rivalry in Mathura in June 2020.

The court of additional district judge (special judge SC/ST Act) Manoj Kumar Mishra also imposed a fine of Rs 26,000 each on Mukesh Singh, Digambar Singh, Balram Singh alias Balla, and Bacchu Singh. Special public prosecutor Suresh Prasad Sharma said, “The four had an altercation with the victim before the incident. They first tortured him, burned him with cigarettes, strangled him with a towel, and then tried to burn his body in a field to destroy proof.”

The incident took place under the jurisdiction of Magora police station. Soran Singh’s 22-year-old son, Rakesh, left home at around 6 am and was found dead near a straw heap in Nagla Khari village at noon. Villagers said that Rakesh was killed following a long-standing land dispute with the upper-caste accused, who had previously threatened his life and attempted to disrupt his wedding. The police arrested the four accused and charged them under IPC sections 302 (murder), 506 (criminal intimidation), 34 (common intention), and section 3(2)V of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

“Seeking relaxation in punishment, the four convicts pleaded in court that they are members of the same family and have children and women to look after. And that it was their first crime. However, the court, citing the severity of the crime based on evidence and testimony of witnesses, sentenced all four to life in jail,” Sharma said.

Troubled by the harassment of the bullies, the Dalit family left the village, will change their religion if the harassment does not stop – Gwalior dalit family left village

POSTED ON JULY 22, 2024

In Gwalior’s Satau village, another Dalit family left their house due to the fear of the bullies. The victim family warned the police that if they do not get justice, they will change their religion.

Gwalior: A Dalit family in Satau village, adjacent to the city border, has become homeless due to the hooliganism of the bullies and occupation of their land and house. This family is now forced to come to the check post of Gudha Gudi and live in a rented house. Ramnivas Namdev, who lives in Satau, alleges that he has complained about this to the Jhansi Road police station and senior officials for many days. But his complaint is not being heard. On the contrary, the harassment of the bullies is increasing.

The bullies took over the house

Victim Ramnivas Namdev says, “The bullies Mansingh, Jitendra and Dharmendra Gurjar etc. got his Pataur and Madhaiya demolished with a JCB machine. When he protested, they beat him up and threw him out of the house in the village. That area is Gurjar dominated, so there are very few people from his community. Most of these people have left the village.” Ramnivas Namdev met the police officers on Sunday and said, “If he does not get justice, he will leave Hinduism and adopt another religion. Because when Hindus living among Hindus start exploiting them, force them to leave the village, then it is difficult for them to live in such a society.”

Thrown out of the village, beaten up

Ramnivas Namdev also alleges that these bullies have usurped his land and house. On July 19 too, Dharmendra and Sandeep from Mansingh’s family tried to beat him up, somehow he escaped. On July 18, he went to his ancestral home. Then the accused had instructed him not to enter the village again. A complaint was made to Jhansi Road police but they did not take any action. Additional SP Shiaz has now assured the victim’s family that he will soon take effective steps to do justice to them.

Additional SP ordered investigation

Additional SP Shiaz KM said, “The victim has complained that some people of Satau village have occupied his land. Also, he is being harassed and beaten. The complaint application has been sent to the station in-charge of Jhansi Road police station. Police have been instructed to take appropriate action. Strict action will be taken against whoever is found guilty.”
