Bias against OBCs, SCs, STs in U.P.BJP govt. appointments, Union Minister tells Yogi

Ms. Patel’s letter, written on her party’s letterhead, comes weeks after the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) poor performance in the Lok Sabha election and is being seen as part of a tussle within the party and its allies in Uttar Pradesh.
In her letter, written on Friday, Ms. Patel said the NDA government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken steps to provide reservation for students of backward classes in the entrance examination of Kendriya Vidyalayas, Navodaya Vidyalayas, Sainik Schools and NEET to ensure their bright future.
“The candidates from OBC and SC/ST communities are constantly contacting me and saying that they are often declared ‘Not Found Suitable’ for the posts reserved for them in various competitive examinations conducted by the State government that have an interview-based recruitment process. Later, these posts are declared unreserved,” Ms. Patel wrote.
The Minister said Mr. Adityanath would agree that candidates from OBC and SC/ST communities fulfil the minimum eligibility criteria for these examinations and reach the interview on the basis of their merit. “Hence it is beyond comprehension that candidates from OBC and SC/ST communities are being repeatedly declared as ‘Not Found Suitable’ and that this should be stopped by taking effective action to stop the anger arising among the candidates from these communities,” she said.
Ms. Patel urged the Chief Minister to organise multiple rounds of interviews to fill the posts and not declare them unreserved. “It is also requested that necessary provisions be made to make it mandatory to fill the posts reserved for OBCs and SC/ST categories in competitive examinations having interview-based recruitment process, with the candidates coming from these categories only, no matter how many times the recruitment process has to be conducted for this,” she said.
Reacting to Ms. Patel’s letter, a senior BJP office bearer from Uttar Pradesh said: “At a time when the BJP is trying to overcome its loss in polls, majorly due to the Opposition’s pitch in which it almost convinced the backward sections of voters that the party will change the Constitution if given 400 seats, this letter by the party’s ally may further dent the ruling party.”
Many in the BJP, however, are seeing Ms. Patel’s letter as a ‘routine muscle flexing’ by smaller parties who want to remain relevant at a time when they could only win a single seat in the Lok Sabha election. Apna Dal has 13 MLAs in the State Assembly.

TIRUNELVELI: Members of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), led by district secretary M Muthuvalavan, submitted a petition with District Collector KP Karthikeyan and Superintendent of Police N Silambarasan here on Thursday, demanding action against the miscreants who beheaded the statues of deities at a temple in Moovirunthali Salaiputhur village.
Muthuvalavan alleged that the Devarkulam police failed to take any steps to trace the miscreants in spite of receiving a complaint from the villagers five days ago. "As many as 660 members of the SC community reside in Moovirunthali Salaiputhur village. They had installed the statues of Karuppasamy, Sudalaimadan and Pechiamman deities at the roadside temple, and have been worshipping them for decades. However, on Saturday night, some miscreants beheaded the statues of Karuppasami and Sudalaimadan deities," he said.
The petition further stated that a statue of a dog was also beheaded at the temple. "We had lodged a complaint with the Devarkulam police in this connection, but no action was taken to nab the miscreants," Muthuvalavan stated in the petition.
Speaking to TNIE, Muthuvalavan said the act of the miscreants has also created communal tension in Manur. "We came to know that some persons belonging to a dominant caste were involved in the vandalism. They should be booked under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The police should also invoke Goondas Act against them," he added.

Dalit leaders in Congress to be given priority for nominated posts in state
POSTED ON MAY 29, 20

Hyderabad: Congress leaders from the Dalit community will get priority in nominated posts to various corporations in the state as chief minister A Revanth Reddy had promised to do justice to them with Rajya Sabha, MLC and nominated posts during the Lok Sabha election campaign.
None of the Madiga leaders from the SC community got tickets to contest the May 13 Parliament elections in the state. The Dalit leaders had met the CM complaining to him that tickets were given to Madiga leaders from one of the three SC reserved constituencies of Nagarkurnool, Warangal and Peddapalli in Telangana.
The Revanth-led Congress govt has already filled up nearly 50 nominated posts and there are still over 100 vacancies in various corporations. Posts like chief whip and TGSRTC chairman are also expected to be filled up after the poll code of Lok Sabha ends.
Aspirants from SC, ST, OBC, and other communities are exerting pressure on the party leadership to fill up nominated posts immediately after the poll code ends, without waiting for BRS MLAs to join Congress.
There are also apprehensions among the aspirants that only a few corporation posts would be filled up after Lok Sabha elections, and the party leadership will throw the same bait as it did during Lok Sabha elections that all those who work hard in panchayat elections would be given the posts of corporation chairpersons.
“Any move to delay it further will not go down well with the party leaders or even leaders from other parties who joined Congress being preferred for important positions over Congress loyalists,” said a senior leader aspiring for nominated post.
However, a senior AICC leader told TOI that CM Revanth will take a decision on filling up the number of nominated posts only after a clarity emerges on the important leaders likely to shift loyalties from BRS and other parties to Congress. Many BRS MLAs are reportedly in touch with various ministers.

Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi came down heavily on the state government over the deaths in Barodia Nainagir of Khurai block of the district.
On Sunday, Rajendra Ahirwar died at Sagar medical college following a fight over an old dispute on Saturday. After the post-mortem, the family was heading towards their village, when his niece Anjana Ahirwar jumped from the ambulance midway on Monday and was seriously injured. She was admitted to a nearby hospital, where she died.
Since then, the Congress leaders have been attacking the state government on poor law and order.
On Tuesday, Patwari visited the village and met the family. Former chief minister Digvijaya Singh visited the village and joined in the last rites on Monday.
In a post on X, Rahul Gandhi said, “Narendra Modi has ended the ‘rule of law’. My heart is filled with pain and anger just thinking about what the BJP leaders have done to this Dalit family in Madhya Pradesh.” It is a matter of shame that under the BJP rule, the government is always found to be standing with the culprits instead of the victimised women, he said.
Priyanka Gandhi in her social media post said, “This incident that happened with a Dalit sister in Madhya Pradesh is heart-wrenching. The people of BJP are after the Constitution because they do not want that women of the country, dalits, tribals and backward people should live with dignity, nor their complaints heard anywhere.”

B Shyam Sundar, who is called a well-wisher of Dalits, whose achievements are limited to the pages of history today, is the hero of the 70s whom the Dalit community has not forgotten even today. He not only worked for the Dalits but also did a lot for their upliftment. It is said that he was very sad to see the condition of the Dalit class. Therefore, he put all his strength in the upliftment of the Dalit class.
By Nandani.
To instill confidence in the Dalits, he also founded an organization which even today works to stop atrocities on Dalits and protect the interests of Dalits. We are talking about ‘Bhim Sena’. This army was more popular in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. Talking about B Shyam Sundar, he was against the adoption of any other religion by Dalits. He believed that Dalits are the original inhabitants of India, so they do not need to adopt any new religion. Let us tell you in detail about B Shyam Sundar.
Early life of Shyam Sundar
B Shyam Sundar laid great emphasis on education. He believed that backwardness of the society can be removed only through education. Talking about his personal life, Shyam Sundar was born on 18 December 1908 in Hyderabad. His father was a railway employee. Shyam Sundar took a law degree from Osmania University and after that started working for the labor union.
Being from a Dalit family, Shyam Sundar was well aware of the social difficulties of the Dalit class. He was an MLA in Karnataka from 1957 to 1961 and continued to work for the upliftment of Dalits there too. Shyam Sundar was an expert and writer of Hindi, Urdu, English, Marathi and Kannada languages. His book ‘An Assessment of Five Thousand Years of History and Culture of India’ became very famous.
Political career
Shyam Sundar practiced law for some time and joined the Swadeshi movement led by Mrs. Sarojini Naidu and served as its general secretary in Andhra Pradesh. He was elected President of the Literary Society of Hyderabad. He accepted membership of the Exhibition Society of Hyderabad.
He was elected unopposed to the Hyderabad Legislative Assembly from the Graduates constituency and later served as its Vice-President. He also led a movement to form a union of minorities and Bahujans to fight for their legitimate constitutional rights.
Minority Movement
According to the information received, with the blessings of Sardar Master Tara Singh, Shyam Sundar formed the “All India Federal Minorities Union” in Hyderabad on 13 October 1956. Shyam Sundar also wrote a pamphlet that a union is necessary for Indian minorities; His demands for the minorities included enforcement of their constitutional rights, preservation of culture, electoral reforms and even nationalization of the administrative problems of the minorities of India.
His main objective was to run a nationwide educational campaign in favor of secularism, to ensure that minorities are not deprived of their constitutional rights and to get fair treatment in civil and military appointments and admission to educational and technical institutions.
Formation of Bhima Sena
Shyam Sunder formed a voluntary core force ‘Bhima Sena’ in Gulbarga district of Karnataka on 29 April 1968 on the 70th birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. He named it Bhima Sena after Ambedkar. It is a self-defense movement based on truth and non-violence. It countered the atrocities of upper caste Hindus on untouchables.
A militant army consisting of about 2,00,000 Dalits. This movement was a rebellion against the Hindu caste system. Shyam Sunder wanted to create Dalitstan, a country for untouchables and wanted an alliance between Dalits, Muslims and untouchables. This is what made Bhima Sena popular. Bhima Sena had three main objectives: twenty-five percent of villages should be assigned to them, separate electorate, separate elections and separate universities for them. However, these demands could not be met. And thus Shyam Sundar, a well-wisher of Dalits who worked for Dalits, died on May 19, 1975.

Who will win Dalit votes — BSP or Azad — in UP bypolls?

Politics over Dalit votes intensifies ahead of 10-seat UP bye-elections
Namita Bajpai
LUCKNOW : After drawing a blank in the recent Lok Sabha polls, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), in a departure from its long-standing stance, has decided to contest the upcoming assembly by-polls to 10 seats vacated during general elections in UP.
This has set the stage for a trial of strength among Dalit voters as the Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad-led Azad Samaj Party (ASP-Kanshiram) has also pulled up its socks to try its fate in bypolls which are likely to be held along with assembly elections to three states.
Emerging as a prominent Dalit leader by winning the Nagina Lok Sabha seat by a margin of over 1.5 lakh votes in his electoral debut against Om Kumar of the BJP, Chandrashekhar has appointed in-charges on four assembly seats – Khair (Aligarh), Meerapur (Muzaffarnagar), Kundarki (Moradabad) and Ghaziabad Sadar (Ghaziabad). On the rest of the seats mainly from central and eastern UP, including Milkipur (Ayodhya), Sisamau (Kanpur), Phulpur (Prayagraj), Katehri (Ambedkar Nagar), Manjhwa (Bhadohi) and Karhal (Mainpuri), he will appoint in-charges soon.
On the other hand, addressing her party leaders at a national level meeting in Lucknow recently, BSP chief Mayawati also made her intentions of contesting the assembly bypolls in Uttar Pradesh clear.
The BSP chief said that she would field candidates on all 10 seats, of which, nine fell vacant after the election of sitting legislators to the Lok Sabha and Sisamau seat in Kanpur got vacant after the disqualification of sitting MLA Irfan Solanki who was convicted and sentenced by a local court in a criminal case.
Mayawati also made it clear that the party would go it alone in the bypolls.
With Azad leading the ASP campaign, the fight for Dalit votes between both Dalit-based parties — BSP and ASP — will intensify in UP.
Buoyed by the Nagina success, the ASP has also decided to go solo in the bypolls, said the party sources. “It will give an opportunity to us to expand our base in other parts of the state as well,” says a senior ASP leader.

RSS points to breach in Dalit vote bank behind BJP's UP poll debacle
The RSS said it believed that the reason for the decrease in BJP's overall seats was the increasing anger among the youth regarding unemployment and paper leaks.

- Sangh to work on matters concerning youth, employment
- RSS looks to boost its presence in colleges, universities
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) said a breach in the Dalit and backward classes vote bank of the BJP by the Congress-Samajwadi Party alliance was behind the party's debacle in the Uttar Pradesh Lok Sabha polls, sources said.
The matter was discussed during a meeting held by the RSS, which was attended by RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale, to review the BJP's poll performance. The BJP failed to get a majority on its own and formed the government with help from its allies.
The meeting discussed several aspects of the saffron party's poll performance.
The RSS said it believed that the reason for the decrease in BJP's seats was the increasing anger among the youth regarding unemployment and paper leaks.
The Sangh has now decided to work on issues like employment and reach out to Dalits and the backward classes.
"The reason for BJP's defeat in UP is mainly considered to be the breach in the vote bank of Dalits and backward classes by the India alliance led by SP-Congress", RSS said.
"The Sangh and the BJP believe that this vote bank got scattered and fell into SP's favour. In this context, the Sangh is now focusing on the strategy of increasing penetration among Dalits and the backward classes. More of the programs and exercises are now being focused on these communities," the RSS said.
After the election results, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat was in Gorakhpur for five days in mid-June. During his visit, the current political situation and social concerns were discussed. After that, a four-day review meeting of officials of the eastern region began in Lucknow on June 26.
According to sources, the Sangh will now work on a plan to increase employment opportunities for the youth for the first time. RSS officials will hold a discussion regarding employment generation with business persons and industrialists. There will be more emphasis on cottage industries, sources said.
On the other hand, the RSS will also work to promote "swadeshi". During a meeting of the national council of the Sangh it was stressed that the 'One District One Product' (ODOP) scheme would be promoted.
RSS said work will be done to connect more and more young people with Dalits and backward classes.
In a separate meeting with the district campaigners of the Sangh, it was decided that the outfit would also boost its presence in colleges and universities.
For this, student branches will be set up in all the districts. Moreover, a contact campaign will also be expedited. For this, the Sangh will give training to new campaigners.
Caste, Capitalism, and Collaboration: A Dalitgiri Perspective on Nag Ashwin's 'Kalki 2898 AD'

Being a scholar of Dalit issues in India, I am always in search of new narratives and perspectives. Nag Ashwin is the director of the Indian Telugu-language epic science fiction film Kalki 2898 AD, produced by C. Aswani Dutt. The ensemble cast includes Deepika Padukone, Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, and Disha Patani. The trailer of Kalki 2898 AD, which I watched on June 22, 2024, piqued my curiosity.
While I am not an expert in the Mahabharata or Indian mythology, I have seen Ramanand Sagar’s television serials Ramayan and Shri Krishna in the 1990s. Additionally, I have been researching Dalit issues for a decade, particularly the various equations and layers of caste in Haryana.
My research background constantly drives me to analyze world events from a Dalit perspective.

On June 28, 2024, I watched Kalki with my friends, motivated by the trailer. Our group included individuals from scheduled castes, other backward classes, and general categories, representing various sections of society. As we entered the mall, the names Lord Krishna, Asvathama, and Karna repeatedly came to mind.
The movie begins with a scene from the Mahabharata's war. Karna (played by Prabhas) charges in on his chariot, and Lord Krishna (whose face is blurred) criticizes Asvathama (played by Amitabh Bachchan) for killing Ghatotkacha through conspiracy. Ghatotkacha, the son of Pandava Bhima and the demoness Hidimbi, is a half-human, half-demon hybrid.
In this context, I consider Ghatotkacha a Dalit, based on the theory of pure blood by extremist Hindus. Lord Krishna curses Asvathama, predicting that while the Pandavas will die, Asvathama will suffer eternally, yet in the future, he will have a duty to protect the mother of God (played by Deepika Padukone).

The movie then transitions to a new era, depicting a highly advanced civilization with artificial intelligence, driverless vehicles, and severe environmental degradation. The Ganga river is dry, and the land is barren, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable development.
Symbolism and Representation
In this movie, the three characters (Lord Krishna, Asvathama, and Karna) represent three classes of Indian society. Firstly, Hinduism or Hindutva is represented by Lord Krishna, and the director’s understanding of Hinduism/Hindutva is in-depth.
The face of Lord Krishna is blurred by the director, echoing Sashi Tharoor's idea in his book Why I Am a Hindu that the question of God's existence can have multiple acceptable answers, reflecting the inclusivity of Hindu religion. However, the most complex feature of Indian society or Hindu religion is the caste system, which creates a hierarchy in society and divides it into thousands of groups.
Asvathama, the son of Dronacharya who fought on the side of the Kauravas, represents the Savarna class in the contemporary scenario. Karna represents the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Other Backward Classes (OBC), as he faced the hidden threat of his birth identity, similar to what millions of SCs have faced for centuries.
Readers might question how he also represents the Other Backward Classes. My answer is that, despite his skill and honesty, he did not receive his rightful place in society. The Pandavas did not accept him as a Kshatriya, the traditionally governing or warrior class in Hindu India, which holds the second-highest ceremonial position among the four varnas.
Critique of Capitalism
The movie critiques hard-core capitalism, represented by the fictional "Complex" state. The ruler of this state (played by Kamal Haasan) poses as a saint but exploits women's fertility for profit. In this capitalist state, human rights and the rights of marginalized people are disregarded, and individual utility determines one's value.
The movie portrays a multicultural and multi ethnic society in the fictional Sambhla state, where surnames are irrelevant. Ultimately, Asvathama and Karna unite to save the mother (symbolizing Earth) and her unborn child, emphasizing the need for collective effort and the abolition of all forms of discrimination for human survival.
