Dalit leader flays Thirumavalavan for ‘objecting’ Arunthathiyar quota
Coimbatore: Athitamizhar Peravai president Athiyaman has flayed VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan for opposing the exclusive internal reservation for Aruthanthiyars within the reservation for scheduled castes.
Speaking to reporters in Coimbatore on Thursday, Athiyaman said though Thirumavalavan claimed that he was not against reservation for anyone, he is filing a review petition in the Supreme Court against the verdict upholding the internal quota for Arunthathiyars.
“His actions do not match his words,” he said.
Thirumavalavan should openly spell out if he supported the internal reservation for Arunthathiyars or not, Athiyaman said.
He said VCK has never raised its voice for the rights of Arunthathiyars in the last 20 years. He also criticised Puthiya Tamilagam president K Krishnanswamy for opposing the internal quota for Arunthathiyars.
Athiyaman said instead of opposing the internal quota for Arunthathiyars, steps should be taken to ensure that all scheduled castes get their due share of quota.
He said the govt should form a panel for this purpose. As a prerequisite, a caste census should be conducted, he added.
Athiyaman said he has floated a new outfit called Tamil Nadu Arunthathiyar Federation. On behalf of the federation, a rally will be held in Chennai on December 23 to protect the reservation for Arunthathiyars.

அதியமான், அருந்ததியர்களுக்கான உள் ஒதுக்கீட்டை எதிர்ப்பதற்குப் பதிலாக, அனைத்துப் பட்டியல் சாதியினருக்கும் உரிய இடஒதுக்கீடு கிடைப்பதை உறுதி செய்ய நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டும் என்றார்.
இதற்காக ஒரு குழுவை அரசு அமைக்க வேண்டும் என்றார். முன்நிபந்தனையாக, ஜாதிவாரி கணக்கெடுப்பு நடத்தப்பட வேண்டும், என்றார்.

दलित नेता ने अरुंथथियार कोटा पर 'आपत्ति' जताने के लिए थिरुमावलवन की आलोचना की

कोयंबटूर: अथितामिझार पेरवई के अध्यक्ष अथियामन ने अनुसूचित जाति के आरक्षण के भीतर अरुथंथियारों के लिए विशेष आंतरिक आरक्षण का विरोध करने के लिए वीसीके नेता थोल थिरुमावलवन की आलोचना की है।
गुरुवार को कोयंबटूर में पत्रकारों से बात करते हुए, अथियामन ने कहा कि हालांकि तिरुमावलवन ने दावा किया कि वह किसी के लिए आरक्षण के खिलाफ नहीं हैं, लेकिन वह अरुणथथियारों के लिए आंतरिक कोटा बरकरार रखने के फैसले के खिलाफ सुप्रीम कोर्ट में समीक्षा याचिका दायर कर रहे हैं।
उन्होंने कहा, ''उनकी हरकतें उनके शब्दों से मेल नहीं खातीं।''
अथियामन ने कहा, थिरुमावलवन को खुलकर बताना चाहिए कि क्या वह अरुंथथियारों के लिए आंतरिक आरक्षण का समर्थन करते हैं या नहीं।
उन्होंने कहा कि वीसीके ने पिछले 20 वर्षों में कभी भी अरुंथथियारों के अधिकारों के लिए आवाज नहीं उठाई है। उन्होंने अरुंथथियारों के लिए आंतरिक कोटा का विरोध करने के लिए पुथिया तमिलगम के अध्यक्ष के कृष्णनस्वामी की भी आलोचना की।
अथियामन ने कहा कि अरुणथथियारों के लिए आंतरिक कोटा का विरोध करने के बजाय, यह सुनिश्चित करने के लिए कदम उठाए जाने चाहिए कि सभी अनुसूचित जातियों को कोटा का उचित हिस्सा मिले।
उन्होंने कहा कि सरकार को इस उद्देश्य के लिए एक पैनल बनाना चाहिए। उन्होंने कहा कि एक शर्त के तौर पर जाति जनगणना कराई जानी चाहिए।
अथियामन ने कहा कि उन्होंने तमिलनाडु अरुंथथियार फेडरेशन नाम से एक नया संगठन बनाया है। महासंघ की ओर से अरुंथथियारों के आरक्षण की रक्षा के लिए 23 दिसंबर को चेन्नई में एक रैली आयोजित की जाएगी.

Life term for 98 of 110 in Marukumbi Dalit atrocity case

KOPPAL: The Principal District and Sessions Court on Thursday awarded life imprisonment to 98 accused in the Marukumbi Dalit atrocity case in Gangavati, Koppal district. Three accused, who belong to the SC and ST communities, got a five-year imprisonment term.
This judgment is among the rare as 98 accused were sentenced to life imprisonment at a time. Many victims’ family members have been waiting for this decision for the past ten years. A total of 101 accused were arrested on Monday, and the judgment was reserved for October 24. The public prosecutor said a case was booked against 117 people, of whom 101 were awarded punishment, while 16 accused are dead.
When the court decision was announced, relatives and family members of the 98 convicts started crying aloud in distress, while the victims’ family members heaved a sigh of relief.
Manjunath K, Ramesh Kolur and other Dalit leaders from Koppal said they were happy that the court had announced life imprisonment for 98 accused in the Marukumbi case. “We have been waiting for this decision for ten years. Many Dalit leaders supported the families after the incident, and the victims’ family members are also happy with the decision,” they said.
The quarrel started in 2014 when some Dalit youths went to watch a film in a theatre. The quarrel continued, and led to clashes when some Dalits were not allowed into barber shops and hotels. In 2014, some people from other communities set ablaze many huts of Dalits in Marukumbi village of Gangavati taluk, in Koppal district. The case became famous and many Dalit leaders took out a padayatra from Koppal district to Bengaluru.
In 2014, hundreds of people entered the Dalit residents’ area in Marukumbi village and assaulted them, a clash erupted and belonging of Dalits were set on fire. The reason for the clash was said to be denial of entry to Dalits in the village’s barber shops and hotels. Police kept a tight vigil in Marukumbi village for three months.

Lucknow: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday posted a file photo with Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on his X handle to underline the resolve to make India the country that Mahatma Gandhi, BR Ambedkar and Ram Manohar Lohia had dreamt of. In the two-line caption of the photograph, he emphasized the two politicians’ commitment to save the Constitution, reservation and harmony in the country.
“Hume ye thana hai, samvidhan, aarakshan, sauhard bachana hai, Bapu-Babasaheb-Lohia ke sapnon ka desh banana hai (We are committed to save the Constitution, reservation and harmony; and make India a country of Bapu-Babasaheb-Lohia’s dreams),” read the caption under the photograph which shows both the MPs holding each other’s hands raised high. The photograph appears to be one that was snapped at a public meeting where the duo was present.
The post comes a day after it became clear that Congress will not take part in the assembly bypolls in Uttar Pradesh after Akhilesh announced that it will be INDIA bloc candidates who will contest on all nine seats on SP election symbol “bicycle”. The late Wednesday update from Akhilesh concluded with his announcement that SP and the Congress stand united for a big win against the BJP.
Though there were speculations that the Congress was unhappy with being spared only two of the nine seats by the SP in the UP bypolls, SP functionaries said the announcement by party’s president on Wednesday was made after the Congress leadership communicated to the party that the latter may go ahead and field its candidates on all nine seats. “On Wednesday, the Congress leadership was busy with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s public meeting in Wayanad where she is fray for the Lok Sabha bypoll. By late evening, they communicated to the SP that it would be better if, under the given circumstances, the SP fielded its candidates on all seats. The Congress leadership has assured that its cadres and leader will support the SP picks who are contesting as INDIA bloc candidates,” said a senior SP functionary.
The nine assembly seats going to polls are Katehari, Karhal, Mirapur, Ghaziabad, Majhawan, Sisamau, Khair, Phulpur and Kundarki. The bypolls will be held on Nov 13 and results will be announced on Nov 23.

Dalit leaders fail to make cut in BSP’s candidates list for bypolls
Lucknow: No Dalit has been included in the Bahujan Samaj Party’s (BSP) final list of eight candidates for the upcoming UP assembly bypolls, which was announced on Thursday. The party has yet to finalise its candidate for the Khair assembly seat in Aligarh district.
Despite its tradition of appointing “probable” candidates as in-charge of assembly seats where elections are scheduled, the BSP named Dalit leaders as in-charge of the Ghaziabad and Phulpur seats, though both were excluded from the final list released on Thursday.
In the final list for eight assembly seats, the BSP has chosen two OBC, two Muslim, two Brahmin, and two upper-caste candidates. The only seat where the party has decided to field a Dalit candidate is Milkipur in Ayodhya, though this seat will face bypolls at a later date.
In Phulpur, a seat dominated by SC voters, the party replaced Shivbaran Pasi with Jitendra Kumar Singh, a Thakur, who filed his nomination on Thursday. In Ghaziabad, Ravi Gautam was replaced by Parmanand Garg, a member of the Vaishya community. Garg, a political veteran, was earlier associated with both the Congress and the Samajwadi Party before joining the BSP recently.
In the Sishamau seat in Kanpur city, the BSP has fielded a Brahmin candidate, Veerendra Kumar Shukla. The constituency has over one lakh Muslim voters out of a total of 2.5 lakh voters, with SCs and Brahmins making up the second-largest caste groups in almost equal numbers.
