The FIR, a copy of which is with The Indian Express, further mentions that Rahul harassed the girl by calling her on telephone repeatedly and kept asking for “unethical activities”.

The Haryana police on Wednesday arrested a 25-year-old man on charges of abetment to suicide of a 19-year-old Dalit girl. According to the police, Rahul, the son of the college transporter and a resident of Shayam Kalan village in Bhiwani district of Haryana allegedly harassed the girl over phone multiple times.

According to the FIR registered by girl’s father on December 27, his daughter, a third year student of a college in Bhiwani, died by suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at their home, late on December 24.

The FIR, a copy of which is with The Indian Express, further mentions that Rahul harassed the girl by calling her on telephone repeatedly and kept asking for “unethical activities

The FIR also states that the girl couldn’t deposit the college fee on time due to the family’s poor financial condition and she was not allowed to appear for the first paper of the 5th semester on December 6. He told the police that the girl was in distress and Rahul’s continuous calls pushed her into taking the extreme step. An FIR has been registered against the college principal, college transport in-charge Hanuman, his son Rahul and his daughter.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Dalip Singh said: “Based on the FIR we have arrested Rahul and are interrogating him. Rahul had called the girl just before she died by suicide. We are examining their call records. The accused has three cases of cyber fraud registered against him and was arrested earlier too.”

However, refuting the allegations, college principal Dr Sarita told The Indian Express that the matter is not related to college fees. “The girl had appeared for all the examinations, including the last one that took place on December 17. This matter is not related to the college as no fees are charged from the students. Even the books and transportation facility is free of cost,” she said.

The DSP added that they are yet to examine the college records.

When asked, the father of the girl said that they didn’t complain to the police immediately as they were not aware of the reasons behind the suicide. “Later we found two missed calls on her phone. Her friends also told us that she was upset for over a month.”

Meanwhile, the incident has already sparked a political slugfest in the state with the Congress alleging atrocities on Dalits during the BJP’s rule.

Rajya Sabha MP and senior Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala said it’s unfortunate that a Dalit daughter had to commit suicide for not being able to pay her exam fee. “This incident is extremely shameful,” said Surjewala, seeking an in-depth probe into the case.

Congress Lok Sabha MP Kumari Selja said that incidents of Dalit oppression have increased in BJP-ruled states, and the governments have failed to prevent them. “Dalits are not even being heard. BJP-ruled states have, for some time, become laboratories for atrocities against Dalits. Reserved positions are not being filled, and announcements to woo Dalits are made only during elections. After elections, they are forgotten, and their oppression continues,” she said.

Reacting to the allegations, Haryana Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Krishan Bedi said that the opposition leaders should focus on demanding action against the culprits. He added, “By tweeting half-heartedly, these leaders are attempting to shield the culprits. They should instead work towards ensuring justice for the victim. The government stands with the victim’s family, and action will be taken against the culprits.”

Dalit organisations offer floral tributes to Ambedkar in Hubballi

    Posted On January 2, 2025

Hubballi: On Jan 1, commemorating the Bhima Koregaon Dalit Hero Victory Day of 1818 and the new year, various Dalit organisations and the Samata Sena Karnataka offered floral tributes at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar’s statue near the city’s main post office, honouring the heroes of the Veer Bhima Koregaon battle.

During the event, Samata Sena’s Gurunath Ullikashi paid respects to former PM Manmohan Singh and extended greetings for the historic struggle of Jan 1, 1818, Dalit Veer Vijayotsav Day, and senior Dalit leader Pitambrappa Bilar’s birth anniversary. The celebration was subdued due to the former PM’ passing.

Ullikashi said that before Independence, a remarkable victory was achieved when 500 soldiers of the Mahar Regiment triumphed over approximately 27,000 upper caste Peshwas, fighting alongside the British forces for equality and dignity. This historic battle represents the community’s initial struggle for equality.

Ambedkar brought this significant historical event to light, countering attempts to suppress it. Throughout his life, he visited the Bhima Koregaon (Pune) Veer Stupa annually on Jan 1 to honour the valiant soldiers, emphasising the importance of sharing this history widely, he added.

Activists of various Dalit organisations and the Samata Sena Karnataka were present on the occasion.

Atishi slams BJP over temple demolition plans: 'Dual face exposed'

    TOI News Desk / TIMESOFINDIA.COM / Jan 1, 2025, 17:07 IST
Atishi slams BJP over temple demolition plans: 'Dual face exposed'
Delhi CM Atishi accuses the BJP of double standards for planning temple demolitions, including Hindu and Buddhist temples, despite their claims of protecting Hinduism. She asserts that the BJP is circumventing her elected administration and warns of significant community repercussions. The LG’s office denies these allegations as political diversion.

NEW DELHI: Delhi chief minister Atishi intensified her criticism of the BJP, accusing the party of showing its "dual face" for its alleged involvement in the planned demolition of temples in the national capital.

Speaking on the matter, Atishi said, "The BJP central government is planning to demolish temples and Buddhist temples in different parts of Delhi. The dual face of BJP is exposed—they claim to protect Hinduism, yet they secretly order the destruction of these sacred places."
Atishi outlined the sequence of events during a press conference, pointing to a November 22 meeting of the Religious Committee. According to her, the committee decided to demolish temples in areas such as West Patel Nagar, Dilshad Garden, Seemapuri, Gokalpuri, New Usmanpur, and Sultanpuri, along with a Buddhist temple in Sundar Nagari.

She alleged that these decisions had been approved by Delhi's Lieutenant Governor (LG), Vinai Kumar Saxena.
"Yesterday, the LG’s office told the media that there is no order to demolish temples. But this is a lie," Atishi said. "The minutes of the November 22 meeting clearly document the decision to demolish these religious structures. The LG has approved these recommendations, and officials are now preparing to execute the demolitions."

Atishi argued that these actions bypass the elected government of Delhi, claiming that the BJP has manipulated governance structures to exclude her administration from the decision-making process. "Until last year, the Religious Committee came under the Home Minister of Delhi. Decisions required the approval of the Home Minister. However, the LG ordered that religious place demolitions be treated as law and order issues, placing the committee directly under his authority," she explained.

The chief minister also called attention to the broader implications of the demolition plans, particularly for communities that hold these places of worship in high regard.
"It has been decided by the Religious Committee - on your directions, and with your approval - to demolish multiple religious structures across Delhi. As you can see the list of religious structures to be demolished includes many temples, and Buddhist places of worship that are revered by the Dalit community," the Delhi CM said in a letter to the LG on Tuesday.
    'Cheap politics,' says LG's office
The LG's office dismissed Atishi's letter terming it as "cheap politics," and denied any plans to demolish religious structures. The secretariat clarified: "Neither any temples, mosques, churches, nor any other place of worship are being demolished. CM Atishi is attempting to distract from her and her predecessor’s governance failures."
The statement added that strict instructions had been given to the police to prevent politically motivated vandalism.

The LG's office cited the peaceful Christmas celebrations in Delhi as evidence of its commitment to maintaining communal harmony.
This clash comes amid escalating political tensions between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the BJP in Delhi, with Atishi repeatedly accusing the LG of acting as a proxy for the BJP, ahead of assembly elections in Delhi which are scheduled for early 2025.
