Dalit family faces social boycott in Karnataka’s Mysuru

"There is no boycott of Suresh's family. The family is living in the same village, going to the same grocery store along with other villagers," said a police orfficer.

Suresh and his wife in the Srinivasapura village,

A Dalit family in Mysuru district of Karnatka has allegedly been facing a social boycott in Srinivasapura village, which is under Karnataka chief minister Siddarmaiah’s constituency, Varuna.

Local reports suggest Suresh had a fight with another person from the same village. The panchayat decided to impose a fine of Rs 16,000 on Suresh’s family.

However, when Suresh refused to pay the fine, the village decided to boycott his family. The village is predominately owned by the Madiga community

Suresh’s family has been barred from entering the temple. The villagers also stopped taking religious processions from the street where the family lives.

Police deny family’s claim

The Varuna police have denied the claims that Suresh and his family were facing a social boycott by the villagers. Speaking to Siasat.com Varuna sub inspector Chetan Veera said, “The incident stems from a financial dispute four years ago between Suresh and another villager. The matter was taken to a panchayat which was resolved.”

“There is no boycott of Suresh’s family. The family is living in the same village, going to the same grocery store along with other villagers and drawing water from the common well in the village. Suresh raised a complaint with the police and has created a story. He has also given statements in the media alleging social boycott,” Veera said.

BJP mulling Dalit face to be party’s national chief?

|Jan 5, 2025, 01:56 IST
Lucknow: A Dalit minister from the Yogi Adityanath cabinet has been at the centre-stage of BJP's deliberations for the election to the party's national president's post.
Highly placed sources said that the minister, a Jatav, the Dalit sub-caste to which BSP chief Mayawati also belongs, held a national organisational post besides being in contention for the post of deputy CM of UP in the past.
The name of the minister recently cropped up along with the names of two other Dalit leaders – Union law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and BJP's national general secretary Dushyant Gautam, sources said.
The BJP political circuit, as a matter of fact, has been abuzz with speculation over the party's plans to appoint a Dalit as a national president or as UP state chief. The election for the two top organisational posts is expected to be completed by February.
The development has attained much significance days after the BJP found itself in a spot in the wake of a row in Parliament over home minister Amit Shah's remark on Dalit icon BR Ambedkar. Led by Mallikarjun Kharge, a Dalit, the Congress stirred up a narrative to paint BJP as anti-Dalit while cashing in on it effectively during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Not surprisingly, picking a Dalit for a top organisational chair could potentially arm the BJP to counter the opposition more aggressively while consolidating the electorally significant SC vote bank.
Political analysts said that BJP plans to consider a Dalit face for the top organisational post would also require the backing of its ideological fountainhead, the RSS. Sources said that former Etawah MP Ram Shankar Katheria, who belongs to the Dhanuk community, a Dalit sub-caste, is one of the few choices of the RSS, essentially for the post of UP BJP chief. Katheria was also BJP national general secretary and chairman of the National Commission for SC.
Among other names from the Dalit community, the BJP is mulling the names of former MPs Vidya Sagar Sonkar and Vinod Sonkar.
UP BJP spokesperson Hero Bajpai said that the party would choose its national and state presidents after considering all parameters and equations which are suitable for the party. "It is early to say anything at this point in time," he said.
Sources said that the BJP would give the RSS's choice a high priority. Reason: the BJP burned its fingers in the Lok Sabha elections when RSS kept away following national party president JP Nadda's remarks that the party was "Saksham" (capable) on its own.
The new national president, undoubtedly, will have the stamp of PM Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah. Likewise, the new state president in UP will have to be in consonance with CM Yogi Adityanath, the key political figure who would be steering the party's electoral prospects in the run-up to the high-stakes 2027 UP assembly elections.

Two dalits tonsured, paraded on charges of goat theft in Cuttack

Posted On January 5, 2025

The incident drew widespread criticism, with social activists and opposition political parties seeking stringent action against those responsible.

JAGATSINGHPUR: Two dalit men were allegedly tonsured, beaten and had shoes hung around their necks on suspicion of stealing goats in a village under Cuttack district.

The incident which took place recently came to light after a video went viral. A case was later registered with Biridi police in this regard.

According to sources, Bikram Bhoi and Dinesh Bhoi, both in their 30s, allegedly stole two goats from the canal embankment in Gobindpur area of Cuttack district on December 27. As they were fleeing after committing the theft, villagers pursued and apprehended them near a bridge in Bareida village under Biridi police limits in neighbouring Jagatsinghpur district. Gobindpur and Biridi police stations share the borders.

As punishment, villagers tied the hands of Bikram and Dinesh and hung chappals around their necks. Later, they tonsured their heads in public and beat them with sticks and chappals.

The incident was recorded on mobile phone by one of the villagers which later found its way to social media. Both Bikram and Dinesh belong to Sundargaon village under Gobindpur under Cuttack district.

The owners of stolen goats later lodged a complaint with Gobindpur police station, prompting the cops to register a case against Bikram and Dinesh on charges of theft. Meanwhile, the act of dehumanisation, including public humiliation and physical assault, caused outrage.

Bikram’s father Bilash Chandra Bhoi filed an FIR with Biridi police on January 1 against the villagers involved in the act.

The incident drew widespread criticism, with social activists and opposition political parties seeking stringent action against those responsible.

Inspector-in-charge of Biridi police station Sabyasachi Rout confirmed that such an incident was reported. “On January 1, the father of one of the victims lodged an FIR against the villagers who tortured and tonsured the men. A case has been registered against seven persons. Investigation is underway but no arrests have been made so far,” he added.

An eye on the oppressed

Posted On January 5,

“My work is driven by memory, nostalgia for my childhood, and Dalit experiences,” the 45-year-old explains.

Photographer Jaisingh Nageswaran’s childhood was defined by just one incident. Growing up in Vadipatti village (near Madurai) of Tamil Nadu, the school his grandmother, Ponnuthai, ran (Gandhiji Primary School) was demolished owing to caste conflicts and because the family were Dalits. Though rebuilt later, the incident scarred the young boy about how power is always skewed in favor of the rich and powerful and how displacement is reserved for the oppressed. “My work is driven by memory, nostalgia for my childhood, and Dalit experiences,” the 45-year-old explains.

Growing up, his early life in a rural setting shaped his visual storytelling, where themes of simplicity, nature, and nostalgia frequently surface in the form of one’s relationship with agriculture or with the local river. These are the experiences that the photographer exhibits in The Land that is No More at the Indian Photo Festival in Hyderabad. The images were captured during a visit to the villages in the Narmada Valley between 2002 and 2004 at the height of the protests that were witnessed against the increasing the height of the Sardar Sarovar Dam.

The fact that he was a Tamilian who spoke next to no Hindi was no deterrent for the photographer who wanted to capture the displacement of marginalised people. “When I went to the valley, I found that though it was a different state, yet there was an unerring similarity to my own village. The landscape was universal so I faced no challenges. Those fields could have been the rice fields of Madurai, and Narmada could have been the Periyar River that flows through my village,” he says.

In the over 35 images, one can see Nageswaran’s signature exploration of people and spaces—capturing stories that convey strength, belonging, and lived experiences. He strives to highlight the beauty in the ordinary and the unseen, creating a visual dialogue between the subjects and the viewers. Each frame speaks to a greater socio-cultural and emotional truth, a hallmark of his storytelling lens.

Inspired by Iranian cinema and the French New Wave Cinema, his imagery is evocative and deeply personal, blurring the boundaries between documentary and art, creating a poignant record of the subtle beauty of everyday village life. By focusing on simplicity and everyday scenes, he challenges the invisibility of Dalit narratives in mainstream visual culture.

It is this blend of personal nostalgia and broader social commentary that won him the prestigious Grand Prix at the 2023 KYOTOGRAPHIE International Photography Festival in Japan. Currently, he is working on a new series centered on his childhood memories, family history, and the caste struggle and resilience faced by four generations of his family.
