Bengaluru: Social Welfare Minister Dr H C Mahadevappa, a close aide of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, said on Thursday that “nobody can stop us” from discussing issues concerning Dalits.
Mahadevappa also wondered why Congress general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala asked Home Minister G Parameshwara to postpone a dinner meet-up of SC/ST ministers scheduled on Wednesday.
“Dalit issues will be discussed always. We were, are and will keep discussing them. Who’s there to say that we shouldn’t discuss Dalit issues? Nobody can stop us. We won’t listen to whoever says we shouldn’t,” Mahadevappa, a Dalit, said.
Political speculation
The postponement of Wednesday’s dinner meet-up has annoyed SC/ST ministers in Congress. The high command was worried about optics after a dinner meeting Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had with Ministers Mahadevappa, Satish Jarkiholi, Parameshwara and K N Rajanna earlier this month caused political speculation.
On Wednesday, Rajanna was so upset that he asked if the Congress high command was anti-SC/STs.
Mahadevappa said the Congress had organised an SC/ST convention in Chitradurga ahead of the 2023 Legislative Assembly election.
“That resulted in Congress winning 135-136 seats. Dalits are the base of Congress. So, I don’t think anybody will come in the way (of discussing Dalit issues),” Mahadevappa said.
“We should ask why Surjewala got (Wednesday’s) meeting postponed,” he added.
The minister, however, maintained that there was no confusion within the Congress.
Earlier in the day, Parameshwara also maintained that there was no confusion in the party.
He said the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting will be held on January 13. “The agenda is still not known. There’s no confusion. Where’s the confusion?” he said.
To a question on whether the dinner meet-up plan had caused anxiety among a section of Congress leaders, Parameshwara said: “Who caused anxiety to whom? I don’t know. As far as I know, no one is anxious and there’s no need for it. Have we ever said the meeting will be organised outside the party forum?”
As 100 Dalit groups observe bandh in Hubballi-Dharwad against Shah’s Ambedkar remark, BJP says Congress creating ‘atmosphere of fear’
Karnataka’s Opposition BJP says the ruling Congress is creating an ‘atmosphere of fear’ through a ‘state-sponsored bandh’.

Businesses, educational institutions and public transport remained shut in Karnataka’s twin cities of Hubballi and Dharwad on Thursday owing to a bandh called by over 100 Dalit organisations to protest against Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent statement about Dr Ambedkar.
Holding blue flags, many people gathered at Jubilee Circle in Dharwad, raising slogans such as Jai Bhim and Inquilab Zindabad and demanding Shah’s resignation.
During the winter session of Parliament that concluded last month, Shah said in the Rajya Sabha, “Abhi ek fashion ho gaya hai – Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar. Itna naam agar bhagwan ka lete to saat janmon tak swarg mil jata (It has become a fashion to say Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar. If they had taken God’s name so many times, they would have got a place in heaven).”
Select checkpoints were created in Hubballi and Dharwad and traffic police were deployed in view of the shutdown. Many pharmacies were among the businesses that remained shut in Dharwad. Petrol bunks were also closed in the city. It was only after 1 pm that a few fuel stations opened.
A similar shutdown was observed in Kalaburagi, where Dalit organisations took to the streets to protest against Shah’s statement.
Thursday’s shutdown was called by several Dalit outfits under the SC/ST, Backward Classes, Minorities Unity Forum.
However, Dharwad BJP MLA Arvind Bellad called it a “state-sponsored bandh” and accused the ruling Congress of creating an atmosphere of fear through the shutdown.
“The Congress government ordered the authorities and BEOs to shut all schools and colleges. Congress workers were seen recceing the city asking businesses to close their shops. The Congress is trying to build a narrative by cutting the 29-second clip from the video in which Amit Shah made the statement,” he told indianexpres.com. “They are the sole reason for the sufferings of Ambedkar.”
Hubballi Congress MLA Prasad Abbayya said that close to 120 Dalit organisations came together to protest against Shah’s statement. “His statement is demeaning to the creator of the Indian Constitution, and he is answerable for the same. He must resign and apologise for the remarks he has made. The bandh was successful and peaceful,” he told indianexpres.com.
A representative of a Dalit outfit said, “Who is Amit Shah to make such defaming comments on the maker of our Constitution? He is able to speak in Parliament today only because Ambedkar drafted the Constitution. Leaders like Shah do not deserve to be in Parliament.”
Another representative of a Dalit outfit said Dalits must get the recognition that Ambedkar had asked for. “There must be different constituencies for Dalits, and their MLAs and MPs must also be different. Such changes will help transform the atmosphere created against the community by those like Shah,” the representative said.

JAMMU, Jan 8: Reiterating the demand for restoration of reservation in promotions, Jammu Kashmir Reserved Categories Empowerment Alliance (JKRCEA) has castigated ruling dispensation of both Central and JKUT Government for allegedly misleading the SC/ST/OBC masses in the matter of reservation.
“During election campaigns, all political parties do sloganeering regarding reservation for SC/ST/OBCs as enshrined in the Indian Constitution but after getting their vote and coming to power they linger on the issue and create confusions,” said leaders of JKRCEA, while addressing a press conference, here today.
Prof G L Thapa, working president of JKRCEA, while elaborating on the issue, said that during BJP-PDP coalition Government, in Dec 2015, High Court of J&K struck down provisions of reservation in promotions for reserved categories of J&K. Even as SC/ST employees filed SLP in Supreme Court and got ‘blanket stay’ on High Court order, the same has not been implemented so far in spite of JKRCEA’s hundreds of memorandums to Government and LG, he added.
“BJP not only tried to bury the issue of reservation in promotion in JKUT even after 370 abrogation but attacked direct recruitment reservation also by re-casting direct recruitment roster point for SC/STs and finished off backlog post of SC/STs with one stroke of pen,” he said.
Asad Noomani, while further elaborating, alleged that JK bureaucrats miscommunicated and misguided political system of the erstwhile State and now UT when Apex court put a blanket ban on High Court Order that struck down reservation in promotions.
The members of JKRCEA demanded clear stand of National Conference top leadership on the issue of reservation for SC/ST/OBCs including reservation in promotions. The members also warned SC/ST/OBC Morcha leaders of BJP to stop parroting the songs of their political masters and stop befooling their own communities for meager personal political gains.
The JKRCEA leaders reiterated their demand of safeguarding reservation in employments and restoration of reservation in promotions by implementing CAT order, along with submitting urgency memo in the Supreme Court and getting the case disposed off there.
JKRCEA also demanded restoring back the direct recruitments roster, in toto implementation of Mandal Commission Report and initiation of caste based census in JKUT.
The members who attended press conference includes Sham Basson, R C Bhasin, Joginder Pal, T C Bavouria, G L Rahi, M L Banalia, Surinder Dewagowda, Darshan Kalsotra, Kali Dass, M R Bangotra and others.
