Gandhi shared a video on his social media handles of his recent interaction at a Dalit household where he helped out in cooking a meal in their kitchen.

NEW DELHI: The Congress will protect that Constitution that gives Bahujans their rights but true inclusion and equality for all in the society will be possible only when every Indian strives with the spirit of brotherhood in their hearts, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said on Monday.

Gandhi shared a video on his social media handles of his recent interaction at a Dalit household where he helped out in cooking a meal in their kitchen.

“Even today, very few people know about Dalit kitchens.As Shahu Patole said, ‘Nobody knows what Dalits eat.’ Intrigued by what they eat, how they cook, and its social and political significance, I spent an afternoon with Ajay Tukaram Sanade and Anjana Tukaram Sanade,” Gandhi said in his post in Hindi on X along with the video.

“They honored me by inviting me to their home in Kolhapur, Maharashtra to help out in the kitchen.

Together we cooked ‘chane ke saag ki sabzi ‘? ‘harbharyachi bhaji’, and ‘tuvar dal’ with brinjal,” the former Congress president said.

“Drawing on Patole and the Sanade family’s personal experiences with caste and discrimination, we discussed the lack of awareness about Dalit cuisine and the importance of documenting this culture,” he said.

The Constitution gives Bahujans a share and rights, and we will protect that Constitution, he asserted. But true inclusion and equality for all in the society will be possible only when every Indian strives with the spirit of brotherhood in their hearts, Gandhi said.

In the video, Gandhi is seen helping out in the kitchen and then having a meal with the family at their home.

Shahu Patole informed Gandhi that he had written a book in Marathi and now translated into English ‘Dalit Kitchens of Marathwada’, to highlight foods eaten by the Dalits.

शाहू पटोले ने गांधी को सूचित किया कि उन्होंने दलितों द्वारा खाए जाने वाले खाद्य पदार्थों को उजागर करने के लिए मराठी में एक किताब लिखी है और अब इसका अंग्रेजी में अनुवाद 'दलित किचन ऑफ मराठवाड़ा' किया है।

A big news is coming from Odisha. Where on Saturday, Dalit women sat on the road to protest when they were denied permission to perform the ritual of offering milk to the deity in a temple in Kendrapara district. The women say that they were not allowed to perform religious rituals at the Siddheshwari Ramchandi Shakti temple in Garjanga village in the month of Kartik.

Accused the priests

The women alleged that the priests of the temple and some people of the upper caste did not allow them to perform this religious ritual. On this, they lodged a complaint at the Marsaghai police station and demanded action against those who stopped them.

Police gave information

In this case, the police said that after receiving the complaint, efforts are being made to resolve the matter peacefully. Along with this, the police said that talks are being held with prominent people of the upper caste and Dalit community and the situation is being monitored. At the same time, the police have deployed additional forces to maintain peace in the village but the situation is still under control.

ओडिशा के केंद्रपाड़ा जिले से दलित महिलाओं को मंदिर में भगवान को दूध चढ़ाने से रोकने की खबर आ रही है. महिलाओं का आरोप है कि मंदिर के पुजारी और ऊंची जाति के कुछ लोगों ने उन्हें यह धार्मिक अनुष्ठान नहीं करने दिया.

ओडिशा से एक बड़ी खबर आ रही है. जहां शनिवार को केंद्रपाड़ा जिले के एक मंदिर में देवता को दूध चढ़ाने की रस्म निभाने की अनुमति नहीं मिलने पर दलित महिलाएं विरोध करने के लिए सड़क पर बैठ गईं। महिलाओं का कहना है कि उन्हें कार्तिक महीने में गरजंगा गांव के सिद्धेश्वरी रामचंडी शक्ति मंदिर में धार्मिक अनुष्ठान करने की अनुमति नहीं दी गई.

पुजारियों पर आरोप लगाया

महिलाओं का आरोप है कि मंदिर के पुजारी और ऊंची जाति के कुछ लोगों ने उन्हें यह धार्मिक अनुष्ठान नहीं करने दिया. इस पर उन्होंने मार्साघाई थाने में शिकायत दर्ज कराई और उन्हें रोकने वालों के खिलाफ कार्रवाई की मांग की।

पुलिस ने दी जानकारी

इस मामले में पुलिस का कहना है कि शिकायत मिलने के बाद मामले को शांतिपूर्ण तरीके से सुलझाने की कोशिश की जा रही है. इसके साथ ही पुलिस ने कहा कि ऊंची जाति और दलित समुदाय के प्रमुख लोगों से बातचीत की जा रही है और स्थिति पर नजर रखी जा रही है. वहीं, पुलिस ने गांव में शांति बनाए रखने के लिए अतिरिक्त बल तैनात किया है लेकिन स्थिति अभी भी नियंत्रण में है.

Parliament panel to debate proposal on private sector quota for Dalits, tribals

NEW DELHI: In a consequential move, a key parliamentary panel is set to discuss proposal for reservation in private sector, a sensitive issue with serious political and social repercussions.

The issue pertains to extending the frontiers of quota for Dalits and tribals from govt to private sector, a demand which gained prominence during UPA decade but then petered out. UPA govt, led by Manmohan Singh, had formed a dedicated ‘group of ministers’ to discuss the issue but its prolonged discussions did not lead to any concrete output, despite touching a crescendo at one point. It is likely the second time that a top govt or parliamentary body will discuss the subject.

The parliamentary committee on welfare of SCs/STs has listed it as part of its annual agenda of deliberations. Sources said the subject was mooted by Azad Samaj Party MP Chandrashekhar Azad in the first meeting of the panel to finalise list of business, and found support from others.

The proposal to extend quotas to private sector, which has had some push from champions of social justice but never became a forceful demand, has a polarising edge. While its proponents argue that rapid privatisation is leading to shrinking of seats in govt sector that fall in ambit of reservations, other decry that it will hurt the economy and compromise merit in appointments in the industry and corporate sector. Some also argue that enforcing quotas in private bodies would be unconstitutional.

Chairman of the committee, Faggan Singh Kulaste said, “The issues are decided by the members. It is the agenda of the year and we will take up this subject with time.”
