HYDRAA razes wall blocking Dalit Colony
Hyderabad: Residents of a Dalit Colony in Devarayamjal can now access their homes freely after HYDRAA demolished an illegally constructed wall that had blocked their entry since 1985.
The wall, built by Tirumala Ventures, had cut off previously available roads, severely restricting movement. Despite repeated petitions to officials over the years, no action was taken. On February 17, residents filed a complaint with HYDRAA Prajavani and commissioner A.V. Ranganath ordered its immediate removal.
The blockade had caused immense hardship, preventing ambulances and fire engines from reaching the colony. Residents were forced to rely on two-wheelers, and in emergencies, pregnant women and critically ill patients had to be carried manually to access medical facilities.
With the wall now dismantled, the residents expressed joy and relief, calling it a victory after decades of struggle. “After 39 years, we finally have the right to access our own homes,” one resident said.

பிப்ரவரி 17 அன்று தாக்கல் செய்யப்பட்ட எஃப்ஐஆரில், பிப்ரவரி 8 முதல் 10 வரை, சுய்காம் காவல் நிலைய எல்லைக்குட்பட்ட கல்யாண்புரா கிராமத்திற்கு அருகில் அமைந்துள்ள கல்யாணேஷ்வர் மகாதேவ் மற்றும் ராமச்சந்திர பரிவார் மற்றும் கோகா மகாராஜ் ஆகிய இடங்களில் கும்பாபிஷேகம் நடைபெற்றதாகக் கூறுகிறது.

Allege Valmiki temple in village being targeted by panchayat
Representatives of the Dalit community blocked PAP Chowk for over three hours, lodging their protest against the panchayat of Nurpur Chatha village that wants to free the panchayat land used by the community for Valmiki temple.
They said the panchayat land was being used for religious sites in various villages. “Various religious structures are often raised on panchayat land but the Valmiki temple in our village is being targeted by our panchayat. The action is one-sided and deliberate. Even the police are siding the panchayat”, alleged Joginder S Mann, Chairman, Adivasi Gian Nath Puran Sangharsh Dal, who led the protest.
The agitators alleged, “The panchayat and the police have been specifically targeting the Dalit community of our village over one issue or the other.”
The protesters were also joined by residents of Jalalpur village of Lohian where sacrilege of religious scriptures had taken place. “As many as 60 pages of our granth were found torn. We lodged a complaint with the police. The FIR has been registered against unknown persons”, they said.
During the protest, the commuters faced trouble and had to take long route to reach their destinations. The commuters from the Rama Mandi side entering Jalandhar were directed via Jalandhar Cantonment instead of the highway. The commuters from Phagwara side to Amritsar remained unaffected as the flyover was not blocked. Only the road beneath the flyover remained blocked.
Several passengers who often take buses from PAP Chowk instead of the bus stand could not catch a bus from the site as the buses could not reach the blocked PAP Chowk. The traffic police had diverted the commuters towards internal roads, not allowing them to reach near the protest site.

कई यात्री जो अक्सर बस स्टैंड के बजाय पाप चौक से बसें लेते हैं, साइट से बस नहीं पकड़ सकते थे क्योंकि बसें अवरुद्ध पाप चौक तक नहीं पहुंच सकती थीं। ट्रैफिक पुलिस ने यात्रियों को आंतरिक सड़कों की ओर मोड़ दिया था, जिससे उन्हें विरोध स्थल के पास पहुंचने की अनुमति नहीं थी।

பல்வேறு கிராமங்களில் உள்ள மத தளங்களுக்கு பஞ்சாயத்து நிலம் பயன்படுத்தப்படுவதாக அவர்கள் கூறினர். DSP Vijay Kunwar Pal, after holding a meeting with union leaders, met protesters and assured them of action – registering a case against those who had allegedly trapped Dalit workers in a cycle of debt by manipulation and forgery; recovering the trolley and motorcycle stolen by a financier of Mustafapur; action against those who tried to illegally occupy the house of an elderly woman from Baljot Nagar; action under the SC/ST Act against the upper caste people who attacked a Dalit family of Fatehjalal and investigating and taking action in the murder case registered against former Sarpanch of Kalyanpur Iqbal Singh to ensure provision of justice – in two days.
Union leaders announced that if the administration did not implement the assurance given, the union would be forced to stage a permanent morcha.
Leaders alleged that due to political pressure, the Kartarpur police were not taking action against some Phagwara residents and their aides who had trapped Dalit labourers in debt trap by cheating and forgery for a long time.

Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal on Wednesday urged AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal to choose a Dalit MLA for the post of Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Delhi Assembly.
“I request you to make an MLA from the Dalit community as the Leader of Opposition. Appointing a Dalit MLA as the LoP will not only be a political decision but also a significant step towards social justice and equal representation,” Maliwal said in a letter to Kejriwal.
Maliwal, through her letter, also reminded Kejriwal of the 2022 Punjab election promise to appoint a Dalit leader as Deputy CM.
“It is very sad that even after 3 years, the promise has not been fulfilled… Avoid repeating the breach of promise and take the historic decision in Delhi by appointing a Dalit as LoP,” Maliwal said.
She said those who trusted Kejriwal’s promise deserve to see it being honoured. This is the right time to ensure meaningful representation. She cautioned the AAP convener against repeating the mistake of allegedly “not delivering on commitments”.
Notably, the Leader of the Opposition is the one who leads the official opposition in the 70-member Delhi Legislative Assembly.
After facing a defeat in the recently concluded Assembly poll, the AAP is reduced to 22 MLAs from the previous majority of 62 legislators in the Vidhan Sabha.
The AAP faces a tough task to find the right person for the post of LoP, especially after its topmost leader Kejriwal lost the elections.
According to party sources, caretaker CM Atishi, Gopal Rai, Sanjeev Jha and Jarnail Singh are among the frontrunners for the position of LoP.

The Dalit teen athlete who was allegedly raped by 59 people in Kerala’s Pathanamthitta is keen to complete her technical training course and is likely to be tutored at the state-run after-care home where she has been kept till she is ready to attend classes at the ITI, one of the places where she was assaulted.
“The girl was pursuing a technical training course at the ITI and is disappointed that she is not able to attend college. She is keen to study further. She will be able to study at the after-care home where she is currently lodged. But she will have to visit the college to write the exams and that will be problematic because her classmates and friends have been accused of raping her. They all have been arrested but returning to the same college will be difficult,” N. Rajeev, chairman of the Child Welfare Council (CWC) in Pathanamthitta district, told The Telegraph.
Rajeev said the victim was holding up and was in a good state of mind.
So far, 57 people, including four minors, have been arrested in connection with the case. Kerala police have approached Interpol to nab the remaining two accused who have fled to West Asia. Never in Kerala had so many people been booked for sexual exploitation in a single case.
On January 10, the teen athlete shook Kerala by revealing that she had since the age of 13 been sexually abused by 59 people, including her classmates at school, her neighbours, coaches and fellow athletes.
Her day-labourer parents were unaware of the sexual abuse their daughter had undergone for five years until a group of CWC counsellors arrived at their home during a door-to-door visit and stumbled on the horrifying atrocity. Asked routine questions about whether the girl was attending school, the victim confided in them about her ordeal.
Sources said the girl was first sexually abused at the age of 13 by her then boyfriend, who later handed her over to his friends. Some of the abuse allegedly happened at her home when the parents were out for work.
Later, the girl, a local-level athlete, began staying away from home on the pretext of attending overnight training camps. She has alleged sexual abuse there, too.
Twenty-nine cases have been registered in four police stations in Pathanamthitta under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act and the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Most of the cases have been registered at the Elavumthitta and Pathanamthitta police stations.
The Kerala police’s special investigation team, headed by deputy inspector-general S. Ajeetha Begum, is overseeing the investigation.
“The police’s job of identifying the alleged abusers had become easy because the names and numbers of at least 40 of the accused were saved on the mobile of the girl’s father without his knowledge. The suspects used to communicate with the girl on the father’s phone. The SIT has arrested 57 people so far,” Ajeetha told this paper.
“The girl is cooperating with the investigation. She is keen to have a better life and wants her rapists to be brought to book. The chargesheet is being prepared. Counselling is being provided to the⁰ ⁰victim and her parents,” she said.

The bullies had already threatened, so the family had decided to perform the ritual of Toran with the mare at a distance of only 50 feet. Around 11:30 pm, four youths arrived and ran away with the groom’s mare.
A complaint was filed with the police and a case was registered
Bhagirathram Raigane, father of groom Sunil, gave a complaint to the police. He alleged that his son’s marriage was fixed with Suresh’s daughter Pooja in Hariyali. They reached Hariyali with the wedding procession on Tuesday (18 February). The accused Mahipal Singh, Balwant Singh Rajput along with four-five people, during the Toran ritual, got the groom down from the mare and used casteist words.
The mare was recovered and the rituals were completed.
On receiving the information, Gyan Chandra Yadav, Sanchore Additional Superintendent of Police Avaddan Charan, IPS trainee Kamble Sharan Gopinath, Sanchore ADM Daulatrat, Subdivision Officer Pramod Kumar Chaudhary reached the spot. A police team was formed and blockades were put up all around in search of the mare. The police recovered the mare and went to the groom’s house and completed the marriage rituals at night. The police arrested Bhikhsingh, Ramesh Kumar, Suresh Bhil for disturbing the peace. The other accused fled from the spot.

Sanchor police station incharge Devendra Singh Kachhwaha told the media that a case has been registered on the report of the groom’s father and investigation has been started, while teams have been formed to arrest the remaining accused.

17 get lifer for killing Dalit youth

Nalgonda: Special Sessions Court under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act on Tuesday sentenced 17 people to life imprisonment for killing of Dalit youth Batta Lingaiah at Ajimpet of Addagudur mandal in Bhongir district in 2017.
According to Rachakonda police, Lingaiah went to jail in 2017 on the charges of killing a person belonging to BC community and came out from the jail after three months.
To take revenge, 17 relatives of the deceased lynched Linagaiah when he was going to participate in Dasara celebrations in the village.
In another murder case, Additional District Judge-III and Family Court judge of Nalgonda D. Durja Prasad sentenced five people to life imprisonment.
It was proved in the court that Soma Sawathi, with the help of her paramour Dubba Pradeep and his friends Kodideti Shiva Kumar, Kumbham Prasad and Chinthapally Nagesh, killed her husband Keshavulu on July 1, 2019.
In another revenge killing case, the Additional District Judge of Bhongir sentenced Shetti Srishailam to life imprisonment for killing a person at Bibinagar on February 18, 2024. Dalit girl told to prostrate before OBC student by college staff: Director of NCSC meets victim
Mala Vinodhini, a resident of Nayinampatti in Tenkasi, was studying a diploma course on assistant staff nursing at a health education institute run by Dr Sivakumar in Kovilpatti. Vinodhini, who belongs to a Scheduled Caste, had an altercation with an OBC student on January 31.
When the issue came to the knowledge of the institute’s supervisor Krishnapriya, she inquired with Vinodhini and the other student. Krishnapriya allegedly assaulted Vinodhini in front of the students, and also told her to prostrate before the OBC student and apologise.
Allegedly, Krishnapriya also hurled used caste names against Vinodhini, according to her complaint to Kovilpatti DSP Jeganathan.
Acting on the complaint, an FIR was registered against Krishnapriya under four sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Jeganathan said that no arrests have been made so far, and an investigation is under way.
