India to send Lord Buddha's holy relics from Gujarat's Aravalli to Thailand: PM Modi
He made the announcement during his speech with his Thai counterpart, PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra, in Bangkok.
Elaborating on the cultural ties between the two countries, PM Modi shared how India had sent Lord Buddha's relics to Thailand last year. He said, "Last year, holy relics of Lord Buddha were sent from India to Thailand. It is a matter of great joy that over 4 million devotees received the opportunity to have a darshan."
Typically housed in the National Museum in New Delhi, these holy relics rarely leave India for public exposition. This occasion marked the first time in recorded history that the relics of Buddha, along with those of Sariputta and Maha Moggallana from Sanchi, were enshrined together, wrote Ambassador Nagesh Singh in an op-ed published by the Embassy of India in Thailand.
On Thursday, PM Modi announced, "I am happy to announce that the holy relics of Lord Buddha, which were found in Gujarat's Aravalli in 1960, will also be sent to Thailand for darshan."
According to the Gujarat Tourism website, these relics were unearthed from Devni Mori, which contains the remains of a Buddhist monastery dating back to the 3rd- 4th century AD.
"Excavation of the stupa brought to light an inscribed casket which contained relics of Budhha. The inscription clearly mentions that the casket contains bodily relics of Buddha", the website states.
Previously, the exposition of Buddha's holy relics from India to Thailand took place in 1995-96 to mark the 50th anniversary of King Rama IX's accession to the throne. The relics of Arahata Sariputta and Arahata Maha Moggallana were brought to India in 1952 by Syama Prasad Mookerjee, the then President of the Maha Bodhi Society, as part of a Dhammayatra to several countries after being retrieved from England following India's independence.
PM Modi also highlighted the long-standing ties between India and Thailand, which were evident during the Mahakumbh earlier this year.
He said, "Our ancient ties were also seen in India during the Mahakumbh. More than 600 Buddhist devotees from Thailand and several other countries became a part of this spiritual and cultural gathering. Mahakumbh gave a message of world peace..."
PM Modi is in Thailand to participate in the sixth BIMSTEC Summit.
The summit, scheduled for Friday, marks a significant regional engagement between India and its neighbouring countries in the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) group. (ANI)

Dalit Student Protests Outside BHU Claiming PhD Admission Denial

The student argued that the Banaras Hindu University had the discretion to allocate the unfilled seats to candidates from other categories “but refused” to do so in his case.
A Dalit student has been protesting outside the Vice Chancellor’s residence at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) for the past 14 days after being allegedly denied PhD admission.
Shivam Sonkar claimed that the BHU’s Department of Peace and Conflict Studies had announced six PhD seats, with three reserved for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) candidates and three to be filled through an entrance test.
He said he applied for admission via the entrance test and secured the second position. However, there were no reserved seats for Scheduled Caste candidates in the entrance test category, and the three available seats were allotted to General and OBC candidates.
“Additionally, the department failed to fill three seats under the JRF category,” he claimed. Sonkar argued that the university had the discretion to allocate the unfilled seats to candidates from other categories “but refused” to do so in his case. He began his sit-in protest on March 21, the day after the results were announced.
Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Sanjay Kumar assured him on April 3 that his admission request would be reconsidered, Sonkar said. However, the student stated that he will not end his protest until the university grants him admission.
In response, the university administration issued a statement clarifying that Sonkar had applied for admission through the Research Entrance Test, which had only two available seats one for a General category candidate and one for an OBC candidate both of which were filled.
“Since he ranked second, he could not secure admission,” the statement read. The administration further stated that Sonkar is demanding the conversion of three unfilled JRF seats into regular entrance test seats to facilitate his admission.
“However, according to PhD regulations, such a conversion is not permitted, and his admission could not be granted due to his rank,” it added.

Bantwal: Protest demands immediate arrest of landowner for sexual assault on Dalit minor

Bantwal : Dalit rights activists, along with various Dalit and like-minded organizations, staged a protest in Vittal, demanding the immediate arrest of landowner Mahesh Bhat, accused of sexually assaulting a Dalit minor girl in Manila village. The protestors also urged a thorough investigation and the registration of the case under stringent laws to ensure justice for the victim.
The protest march started from Vittal’s private bus stand, proceeded through the main streets, and culminated in a protest gathering near the Nada Kacheri.
Addressing the gathering, Eshwari Padmunja, a member of the State Dalit Rights Committee, accused the police of attempting to cover up the case. She stated that despite the victim’s parents receiving death threats, the police remained silent. She demanded a medical examination of the girl and the immediate arrest of Mahesh Bhat. She further questioned whether the police would remain passive if such an atrocity were committed against their own children.
DYFI district secretary Santosh Bajal stated that the crime was not just sexual harassment but suspected to be rape, and strict action must be taken against the accused. He criticized the police for failing to arrest the accused even after several days, alleging that they were shielding the perpetrator. He also condemned the systemic oppression of Dalit women and called out the silence of BJP leaders on the issue. He warned that if the police failed to act, the agitation would intensify, including a march to the SP’s office.
Labor leader Shekhar emphasized that the protest was beyond caste and religion, uniting people to seek justice for the victim’s family. He condemned the political and police systems for denying justice to marginalized communities.
Dinesh Moolur criticized Dalit youth within the BJP for their silence on the matter, warning that when injustice befalls them, only progressive and Dalit organizations will stand by them. He reiterated that stronger protests would continue if strict legal action was not taken against Mahesh Bhat.
Labor leader B M Bhat, along with farmer leaders K Yadav Shetty, Manjula Nayak, Asadok Konchadi, B K Imtiyaz, Sadashiva Padubidri, Sarojini, Dinesh, S P Anand, and Sesappa Bedrakad, also addressed the gathering.
Several Dalit leaders, including Chandrashekhar Kinya, Vishwanath Manjanadi, Pushparaj Manila, Suresh, Chandappa, Radhakrishna Bondantila, Kamalaksha Bajal, Raghavendra Padpu, Shina Kanyana, Ramappa Manjeshwar, Gangadhar Goliadka, and Vijay Moodbidri, participated in the protest. DYFI leaders Rizwan Harekala, Jagadish Bajal, Naveen Konchadi, Razak Mudipu, Asunt D’Souza, Pramila Shaktinagar, Sunita Tanneerubavi, Jacinta Jokatte, Abhishek Beltangady, and Yogita, along with labor leaders Sukumar Tokkottu, Ramesh, and Yogish Jappinamogaru, were also present.
Following the protest, a memorandum was submitted through the tahsildar’s office. The event was coordinated by Dalit Rights Committee president Krishna Konaje, with Krishna Tanneerubavi delivering the vote of thanks. Vittal police had deployed security arrangements during the protest.

New Delhi- In a significant step towards reshaping India’s media landscape, The Ambedkarian Chronicle (TAC), a new independent media platform dedicated to amplifying Dalit, Adivasi, Bahujan, and other marginalised voices, will officially launch on April 4, at the Constitution Club in New Delhi.
Announcing the launch, Rahul Sonpimple, Editor of The Ambedkarian Chronicle, stated, “This is not just another media platform—it is a movement to reclaim narratives that have been suppressed, distorted, or tokenised by mainstream and even so-called ‘alternative’ media. We refuse to let marginalised voices be filtered through casteist frameworks.”
The platform takes inspiration from Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s radical legacy, aiming to provide an unapologetic space for writers, thinkers, and activists from oppressed communities to articulate their struggles, aspirations, and analyses without censorship or dilution.
TAC is a space dedicated to nurturing young writers, thinkers, and activists from the most marginalized sections of our society, providing them with the platform they deserve to share their untold stories and perspectives.
Inaugural Event to Feature Prominent Dissenting Voices
The launch event, scheduled from 5 PM to 8 PM, will feature speeches and discussions by some of India’s most influential anti-caste and progressive voices, including:
- Arundhati Roy (Author & Activist)
- Meena Kotwal (Founder-Editor, The Mooknayak)
- Sudipto Mondal (Executive Editor, The News Minute)
The discussions will focus on media representation, caste hegemony in journalism, and the need for autonomous Dalit-Bahujan media spaces.
Why This Matters:
In India, even so-called alternative media, which claims to represent diverse voices, often remains under the control of traditional upper-caste structures. These platforms may offer space for some, but they often force marginalized writers to conform to a certain narrative — a narrative shaped by political correctness that caters to the upper-caste sensibilities. Young, new voices from Dalit, Adivasi, and Muslim communities are rarely given the opportunity to speak on their own terms. Instead, their stories, struggles, and aspirations are filtered through lenses that are not their own.
The Ambedkarian Chronicle rises to break that chain. It is a platform that does not simply reflect the power structures of the day, but challenges them. It is a space dedicated to nurturing young writers, thinkers, and activists from the most marginalized sections of our society, providing them with the platform they deserve to share their untold stories and perspectives.
“We are committed to amplifying voices that have often been relegated to the margins of our media landscape, and in doing so, we aim to ensure that their narratives are no longer ignored, but celebrated. Our mission is clear: to create a larger media platform that goes beyond tokenism and political correctness. We do not seek to merely show how “pro-Dalit” or “pro-Muslim” we are. Instead, we aim to center the voices of those who have been systematically excluded from the mainstream and alternative media alike. This is not a project of charity; it is a project of justice, a project of dignity, and a project that is rooted in the very principles of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar — who fought tirelessly to uplift the oppressed and ensure their rightful place in society.
The Ambedkarian Chronicle is not just about amplifying these voices; it is about empowering them to reclaim their narratives and to shape the future of our nation. We are committed to bringing together the wisdom, courage, and resilience of young writers who will not be silenced, who will not bend to the pressures of dominant political and social forces. They will write their truth, and in doing so, they will inspire generations to come”, Dr Sonpimple stated.
