BSNL pensioners stage protest against non-disbursal of pension to 170 SC/ST employees who had taken VRS in 2020

Members of All India BSNL and Department of Telecommunication Pensioners’ Association staged a protest here on Monday against the inordinate delay in disbursal of pension to 170 BSNL employees from Maharashtra who had taken voluntary retirement in 2020.

The protesters said that the administration has been delaying the disbursal of pension with the claim that the genuineness of the community certificate of 170 former employees belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes was being verified.

The association’s Virudhunagar treasurer, Perumalsamy, said that all the employees who had taken VRS from across the nation had got pension but for these 170 SC/ST employees.

“The usual practice is that the administration would take an undertaking from the employees in writing and start to give pension immediately even as their papers would be scrutinised. This is how it has worked in all other States,” he added.

However, in the guise of verification of the community certificates, the pension was being delayed for five long years.

“How long would it take for the administration to scrutinize the papers of 170 former employees?” he asked.

Besides, he said that disbursal of pension had nothing to do with the caste of the pensioner as it is based on the service they had rendered and not their caste. The pensioner have been suffering a lot without the pension due to them, he added.
