3 RPF officials booked for murder after Dalit man dies in custody

His family members allege that he was beaten severely by the RPF personnel and was given electric shocks during interrogation.

A 35-year-old Dalit man, taken in for theft, was found dead while in the custody of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) in Uttar Pradesh‘s Gonda district. The incident prompted the suspension of three officials, who have also been booked for murder.

The victim, Sanjay Kumar Sonkar’s family, has claimed that his death was a result of custodial torture.

They alleged that he was beaten severely by the RPF personnel and was given electric shocks during interrogation. The officers reportedly placed the body in the mortuary without informing them.

The RPF had detained him on Tuesday, November 4, in connection with a recent oil theft case from a goods train at Barua Chak railway station.

Soon after, Sonkar was rushed to the government medical college by the RPF officials, where he was declared dead.

Three officers suspended

Sub-inspectors Surendra Kumar and Karan Singh Yadave, along with constable Amit Kumar Yadav, have been suspended. RPF senior commandant Chadra Mohan Mishra confirmed that a departmental probe was initiated into the custodial death charges.

Crime inspector of Gonda City Kotwali police station, Sabhajeet Singh, verified that a murder case has also been registered against the three officers.

Singh stated that the preliminary medical report from the attending doctor confirmed that Sonkar was dead when he arrived at the hospital.

Meanwhile, RPF senior commandant Mishra stated that the RPF team was led to Sonkar during the investigation of the oil theft case. The stolen oil was procured from the accused victim’s possession on the same day.

Mishra also claimed that the accused’s condition deteriorated while they were conducting the recovery procedure. He was immediately transported to the hospital, where he later died.

The circle officer (CO) of Gonda City said that the initial autopsy report was inconclusive, stating that the “cause of death is not ascertained.” However, the viscera were preserved for forensic tests to investigate further. The CO also clarified that the body showed no clear signs of injury, other than “one or two abrasions”, which cannot be a cause for death.

Bahujan Samaj Party: Mayawati’s party, BSP, will contest the Bihar elections alone; who will prevail in the battle for Dalit votes?

In the 2000 assembly elections, the BSP fielded candidates in 294 seats and won five. This was the BSP's biggest victory in the state. In the 2005 elections, the party fielded candidates in 283 seats and won two. In the October 2005 assembly elections, it fielded candidates in 212 seats and won four.

Mayawati’s party, the Bahujan Samaj Party, has been steadily falling behind in Uttar Pradesh politics. In such a situation, Mayawati has once again increased her political activism. Troubled by the continued erosion of the Dalit vote bank, the BSP president has begun formulating her strategy for the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections. The party has announced that it will field candidates in all 243 assembly seats.

This raises questions about whether Mayawati is preparing to re-launch her nephew, Akash Anand, in Bihar’s political arena. At the same time, a crucial question arises: will the BSP, which won just one seat in the UP Assembly elections, be able to attract the Dalit vote bank in Bihar? The BSP has been steadily lagging behind in Uttar Pradesh politics. Mayawati is striving to establish herself as a national-level Dalit leader. In this context, the Bihar elections present a significant opportunity for her.

Party’s Performance in Bihar

The Bahujan Samaj Party entered the Bihar Assembly elections in 1990. At that time, Bihar and Jharkhand were a united state, and the number of Bihar Assembly seats was 324. In the 1990 Assembly elections, the BSP fielded candidates in 164 seats. However, with a vote share of 0.7 percent, the party failed to win any seats. In the 1995 Assembly elections, the BSP contested 161 seats and won two seats with a vote share of 1.34 percent.

In the 2000 Assembly elections, the BSP contested 294 seats and won five seats. This was the BSP’s biggest victory in the state. In the 2005 elections, the party fielded candidates in 283 seats and won two. In the October 2005 assembly elections, it fielded candidates in 212 seats and won four. In the 2010 and 2015 assembly elections, the party received 3.21 and 2.1 percent vote shares, respectively, but failed to win any seats. In the 2020 assembly elections, the party fielded candidates in 80 seats, but managed to win just one seat with a 1.5 percent vote share.

Why the Bihar Elections Are Important

Although the BSP is severely short of options, given that the Bihar assembly elections will be followed by panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh, followed by assembly elections the following year. However, ahead of the 2027 assembly elections, the BSP is attempting to send a strong message to its party workers. Even if the BSP doesn’t win a single seat in the Bihar assembly elections, the party will aim to secure a 3 to 5 percent vote share.

It’s worth noting that the BSP party’s influence has been evident in the border districts of Bihar before. Districts like Buxar and Gopalganj have seen the party’s MLAs elected to the Bihar Assembly several times. Consequently, the BSP appears to be making a significant bet on the Dalit vote bank.

Gwalior – In a decisive blow against caste-based violence, the Madhya Pradesh High Court at Gwalior on November 6, dismissed the bail plea of Alok Sharma, a key accused in the shocking Bhind urination incident that exposed deep-seated atrocities against the Scheduled Caste community. The ruling, delivered by Justice Anil Verma, emphasizes the severity of the offenses under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, and prioritizes societal harmony amid an ongoing investigation.

The Gruesome Incident: Abduction, Urine-Forced Humiliation, and Casteist Assault

The case stems from a horrifying episode of caste discrimination and brutality that unfolded on October 20, in Bhind district, Madhya Pradesh, drawing widespread condemnation from human rights activists and Dalit organizations. The victim, a member of the Scheduled Caste community and the complainant in the case, had a prior phone dispute with the accused, including Alok Sharma, Sonu (also referred to as Sonu Barua), Chhotu, and others.

According to the FIR (Crime No. 63/2025) registered at Surpura Police Station on October 21, the ordeal began around 2-3 PM when Alok Sharma, accompanied by two co-accused, stormed Gyan Singh's residence. Armed with abusive language laced with casteist slurs, they allegedly dragged the victim out of his home and bundled him into a Bolero four-wheeler, abducting him against his will.

En route to a secluded area on Semarpura Road, the accused escalated the assault by beating Singh with an iron rod inside the moving vehicle. In a dehumanizing act of extreme humiliation, Sonu, Alok, and Chhotu took turns forcing the victim to drink their urine, reducing him to an object of caste-based vengeance. The group then transported him to Sonu Barua's agricultural field, where they continued the savage beating , hurled filthy caste-related abuses, and issued death threats to silence him.

The victim's rescue came at the hands of locals Kedar and Charan Singh, who intercepted the perpetrators and freed Gyan Singh. Traumatized but defiant, Singh lodged the FIR approximately six hours later, triggering swift arrests. Alok Sharma and his co-accused were taken into custody on October 21, and charged under Sections 140(3) (kidnapping to cause death or grievous hurt), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant), 352 (intentional insult to provoke breach of peace), 351(2) (criminal force), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. The charges were further bolstered by Sections 3(1)(r) (insult in public view on caste grounds), 3(1)(s) (promoting enmity against SC/ST), and 3(2)(va) (assault or force against SC/ST persons) of the SC/ST Act, 1989.
