Former CM Ashok Gehlot, LoP Jully Slams Rajasthan University's 'Dalit-Hostile' Neglect: Ambedkar Chair Scrapped in Secrecy, Phule Removed from Syllabus!

Astonishingly, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Alpana Kateja appointed Dr. Tarun Kumar Jorwal from the Law Department as chairperson in March 2025 – nine months after the cancellation, signing off on a leadership role for a defunct entity.

Jaipur- Rajasthan's former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully unleashed a blistering attack on Rajasthan University (RU), branding its handling of the dissolved Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Chair as a "Dalit-hostile" conspiracy that reeks of systemic erasure of social justice icons. In a scathing statement, Jully connected the dots between the chair's quiet scrapping by the central government and the recent removal of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule from the university's curriculum, vowing that such "calculated sabotage" will not go unchallenged.

The controversy erupted from an investigative report by Dainik Navjyoti, which revealed RU's shocking ignorance of the Ambedkar Chair's abolition due to prolonged inactivity.

Funded by the Dr. Ambedkar Foundation under the central government, the chair was part of a nationwide network of 26 endowments at elite institutions like Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). These hubs actively drive research on Ambedkar's visionary ideas – from constitutional rights and social-economic justice to caste eradication, gender equality, and democratic reforms – with steady government support.

— Ashok Gehlot (@ashokgehlot51) January 3, 2026

At RU, however, chronic neglect turned the unit into a "junk-filled ghost" space: cluttered rooms, no clerical staff, and zero programs for PhDs, MPhils, or certificate courses. An RTI query confirmed the damning truth: "The Ambedkar Chair has been abolished by the competent authority due to inactivity, per Note No. R.A./Ad/50681." Astonishingly, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Alpana Kateja appointed Dr. Tarun Kumar Jorwal from the Law Department as chairperson in March 2025 – nine months after the cancellation, signing off on a leadership role for a defunct entity.

Dr. Jorwal, now the "outgoing" chairperson, confessed his unawareness: "I was appointed in March 2025. I had no information that its recognition had ended."

When pressed by the media VC Kateja answered a call once, heard the query, and abruptly hung up. Subsequent WhatsApp messages, texts, and voice notes drew zero reply, underscoring a veil of administrative opacity.

Ashok Gehlot took to x to express his disappointment. He wrote: "The closure of the chair established in the name of the architect of the Indian Constitution, Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, at the University of Rajasthan by the central government, and the administration's apparent unawareness of the matter, is extremely unfortunate. Such a deplorable state of affairs and gross negligence regarding a chair established in the name of Baba Saheb in an institution of learning is inexcusable. This incident reflects the university administration's indifference towards social justice and respect for national heroes. The central and state governments should take immediate notice of this matter."

Jully, speaking to reporters, didn't mince words: "RU's indifference kept the Ambedkar Chair dormant until it was axed. Just weeks ago, Jyotiba Phule was yanked from the syllabus. This is no accident – it's a deliberate plot to obliterate the legacies of social justice warriors. Even with a Dalit higher education minister in place, this blatant disrespect has ignited fury in the Dalit community. We demand accountability from the Governor and Chief Minister. This anti-Dalit policy is intolerable!"

The backlash is building. Dr. Sajjan Kumar Saini, a Post-Doctoral Fellow at RU, echoed Juli's outrage: "Eighty years post-Independence, treating Ambedkar's chair like this is a national shame. The university's disdain for social justice pioneers is unacceptable – students will rise against it."

Experts warn this lapse undermines education's role as a "laboratory for equity," sidelining marginalized voices and stunting vital discourse on inclusion. While peer institutions thrive on Ambedkar's endowments, RU's failure highlights a troubling trend of institutional amnesia toward India's constitutional architect.

Dalits’ body stages dharna at DAC over MGNREGA workers’ pending demands

The district unit of the Dalit Dastan Virodhi Andolan (DDVA) staged a dharna in front of the District Administrative Complex (DAC) here on Monday. They were highlighting the pending demands of MGNREGA workers.

The union also submitted a memorandum of demands to the Deputy Commissioner. Workers, including women, from various villages across the district participated in the dharna.

Addressing the gathering, Ranjit Singh Shakri, district president of the DDVA, said the state government had failed to provide compensation to people whose houses collapsed during the floods. He said the DDVA had submitted applications of 336 flood-affected families from different villages, but officials flatly refused to accept them.

He further stated that while the Union Government claims to provide 150 days of employment annually under NREGA, workers are not being provided even 100 days of work. He demanded that unemployment allowance be paid to workers who are denied employment.

Union leaders Aroor Singh, Joga Singh, Hira Singh, Amandeep Kaur, Kuldeep Singh Kirian, Gurnam Singh Chamba and Nirmal Singh Narli, among others, addressed the gathering. The leaders condemned the replacement of MGNREGA with VB-G RAM G.

They alleged that ruling party leaders in villages were using the NREGA scheme as a political weapon, depriving people with opposing views of employment under the MGNREGA scheme.

Three booked for hurling caste abuses, assaulting Dalit hotel owner in TN’s Dharmapuri

After Sampathkumar stated he was from Annal Nagar in Harur, Velmurugan allegedly hurled caste abuses and attacked Sampathkumar with a broomstick handle.

DHARMAPURI: Two persons were arrested by the Morappur police under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act for attacking a 62-year-old SC man on Saturday. Police are on the lookout for one other suspect involved.

On Saturday, the victim — A Sampathkumar (62), a retired TNSTC bus driver who currently works in a spinning mill near Tiruppur — had gone to a hotel on the Dharmapuri-Morappur Road for dinner. Sampathkumar asked the hotel proprietor, B Velmurugan (47), if idlis were available.

When Velmurugan said only one idli was available, Sampathkumar asked how so, as it was only 7:30 pm. Velmurugan then questioned Sampathkumar about his nativity.

After Sampathkumar stated he was from Annal Nagar in Harur, Velmurugan allegedly hurled caste abuses and attacked Sampathkumar with a broomstick handle. K Ramalingam (48) and M Settu (45) also pushed Sampathkumar and attacked him.

Sampathkumar then sought treatment at Morappur primary health centre (PHC) and later admitted to the Harur government hospital for treatment. He then reported the incident to Morappur police, who register a case against the three caste Hindus under sections of the BNS and SC/ST (POA) Act.

Meanwhile, Velmurugan’s wife, V Lakshmi (37), also registered a complaint against Sampathkumar. She stated in her petition that Sampathkumar arrived inebriated and refused to pay for the food he ate and verbally abused her.

Further, she also claimed that she was attacked and Velmurugan had defended her and urged the police to take action against Sampathkumar. Morappur police also registered a case against Sampathkumar.

On Sunday, police arrested Velmurugan and Ramalingam, and the duo was remanded. Police are searching for Settu, who is absconding.

Caste becomes a barrier in Telangana: Senior doctor reneges on marriage promise, Dalit intern commits suicide

A 23-year-old Dalit woman house surgeon in Siddipet, Telangana, committed suicide after a senior doctor reneged on his promise of marriage, citing caste differences. Police have arrested the accused under the SC/ST Act.

A 23-year-old Dalit house surgeon (intern doctor) at a government medical college in Siddipet district of Telangana allegedly committed suicide after being cheated by a senior resident doctor who had promised to marry her, police said. Distraught by the accused’s refusal to marry her due to caste differences, the student injected herself with a herbicide at the college hostel on January 3, rendering her unconscious, police said.

Her roommates admitted her to a hospital, officials said on Monday. She was first admitted to a hospital in Siddipet and later shifted to a government hospital in Hyderabad, where she died during treatment in the early hours of January 4.

According to the police, based on a complaint lodged by the victim’s sister, a case was registered against the accused under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, and he was arrested. They said the student, who hailed from a poor family in Jogulamba-Gadwal district, had studied at a Social Welfare School and later enrolled in MBBS at the Government Medical College in Siddipet in 2020.

Police said she excelled in academics and sports. Her parents are laborers, while her elder sister is a software engineer. According to the police, the 23-year-old student was doing her internship at the Government Medical College in Siddipet, where she met the accused senior resident last July.

Police said the accused, who belongs to a backward class, had promised to marry her but later refused, citing caste, following which the student took the extreme step.

Synopsis: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that a special law would be enacted to curb caste killing incidents. The chief minister made the announcement following a caste killing in Hubbali in December.

Just a few weeks after the state government passed a bill to check hate speech, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, on Sunday, 4 January, said that a special law would be enacted to curb caste killing incidents.

The chief minister made the announcement following a caste killing in Hubbali in December.

In a statement on X, Siddaramaiah said that ensuring a swift investigation into the caste killing of a young woman, Manya, from Inam Veerapur in Hubballi taluk in December, and delivering justice to the affected family, is the government’s top priority.

“In this context, the government will take steps to establish a fast-track court,” he said.

‘Charge sheet must be filed in 60 days’

Siddaramaiah said that a murder case has been registered, also including sections under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

“As this is an Atrocities Act case, the charge sheet must be filed within 60 days. Accordingly, steps are being taken to appoint special public prosecutors,” he said.

Siddaramaiah further said that forcing a girl into marriage against her will or rejecting a marriage, caste-based violence, incidents such as assaults and honour killings, are despicable acts that shame human society.

“Under no circumstances will our government tolerate this. In the future, to curb such incidents and to raise awareness about the law among the people, a special law will be enacted,” he said.

He said that the matter would be discussed in the next session of the Legislative Council and appropriate decisions would be made.

In December, the Karnataka government had passed the Hate Speech and Hate Crimes (Prevention) Bill, 2025, amid uproar from the Opposition and an incomplete debate in the Assembly. With the Bill, the state became the first in the country to introduce dedicated legislation to tackle hate speech and hate crimes.

Opposing the Soren govt’s PESA rules, Adivasi leaders alleged, definition of Gram Sabha inconsistent with the PESA Act of 1996

    05 January 2026.

Four tribal leaders- Laxmi Narayan Munda, Geeta Sri Oraon,Prem Shahi Munda and Dev Kumar Dhan have pounced on the Hemant Soren government alleging that the PESA rules notified by it “ weaken” the power of governance of the Gram Sabha. “ Withdraw these rules and formulate new rules in accordance with the spirit of the PESA Act, 1996”, they have demanded under the banner of Adivasi Bacchawo Morcha.

These Adivasi leaders are not alone in flagging allegations of dilution of Adivasi rights under the newly notified PESA rules.

Adivasi leader belonging to the BJP and former Chief Minister and Union Tribal Affairs Minister has accused the Hemant Soren government of weakening the very spirit of the Panchayats (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act, 1996.

Arjun Munda has alleged that the Panchayat Provisions (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Jharkhand Rules, 2025, amount to a direct attack on tribal self-governance.

Talking to media persons at the state BJP headquarters in Ranchi on Sunday, Arjun Munda said the rules have tampered with the basic intent of the Panchayats (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act, 1996, which was enacted to safeguard the rights of tribal communities in the Fifth Schedule areas including Ranchi, Khunti, Simdega and Gumla.

According to Munda, the Hemant Soren government has “stabbed the very soul of the PESA” Act.

“What has been done through these rules is nothing but a cold-blooded murder of the Act,” Munda said.

While the state has the authority to frame rules for implementing the PESA Act, it has no right to alter its fundamental spirit, he added.

Munda further said that the demand for implementation of PESA in Jharkhand had been pending for years and that people were forced to approach the courts, compelling the government to notify the rules after a prolonged delay.

Raising objections to the content of the rules, Munda alleged that the definition of Gram Sabha in the Jharkhand PESA Rules is inconsistent with the central PESA Act of 1996.

What is noteworthy is that Munda has gone on record saying, “the Act defines Gram Sabha on the basis of customary law, religious practices and age-old traditions, whereas the state rules have concealed this definition and merely referred to ‘tradition’, without defining the term.

Also, Munda referred to the other nine tribal dominated states where the PESA Act was in force and have framed their rules strictly in accordance with the Act. Although the notified rules are voluminous in Jharkhand, they lack clarity and substance, Muna said.

“The rules are large in pages but hollow in content. Such ambiguity will allow the administration to implement them according to its convenience, weakening tribal self-governance institutions,” Munda said.

Dilution of the original spirit of the Act would lead to serious consequences in the future, he warned.

Munda accused the state government of attempting to alter the character and identity of tribal society. “Just as an individual’s identity is shaped by family, tribal society too has a distinct character. The government has tried to change this character,” said Munda, calling the rules a major fraud on the tribal community.

The former Chief Minister said governments in Fifth Schedule areas are expected to function with sensitivity towards tribal communities, but the Jharkhand government has failed to do so.

“Despite the delay, the rules are still incorrect and deviate from the original intent of the PESA Act. This shows the government’s insensitivity towards tribals,” he said.

Notably, under continued pressure from the Jharkhand High Court over delays in implementing the Panchayat (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act, 1996, the Jharkhand Cabinet on December 23 cleared the Panchayat Provisions (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Jharkhand Rules, 2025, finally putting in place a long-awaited legal framework considered vital for grassroots governance in tribal areas.
