Dalit Youth Beaten Up in Ayodhya, Allegations of Extortion: Case Not Registered Even After Victim’s Complaint, SHO Says Investigation Underway
A serious case of a Dalit youth being beaten up in Ayodhya's Amaniganj area for refusing to pay extortion money has come to light. The tractor driver and his Dalit assistant allege that they were demanded Rs. 10,000, and when they refused to pay, they were assaulted.
The incident took place near Baba Khaki Das Dharam Kanta on the Amaniganj-Milkipur road near Nandoli village in the Khandasa police station area. According to the victim, their tractor was stopped by a Bolero vehicle, and money was demanded. When they refused to pay, the Dalit youth was severely beaten and his clothes were torn. The victim has filed a complaint with the local police.
The police said that they have received complaints from both sides in this matter. The preliminary investigation has revealed that there was a scuffle, and allegations of extortion have also surfaced, which have been corroborated by the statements of several people.
The victim’s side has alleged that a woman and her two associates assaulted them. There is also talk in the area that the said woman and one of her associates are of a criminal nature and have previously been to jail in criminal cases. However, the police have not yet officially confirmed this.
Local people are also discussing that widespread extortion is being carried out in the area by two alleged journalists and a person with a criminal background. This has created an atmosphere of fear among village heads and other elected representatives. People say that these people reach anywhere and exert pressure, and there are also complaints of them threatening and extorting illegal gains in the name of inspecting the area’s cow shelters.
Station House Officer Surendra Kumar Sonkar said that Sub-Inspector Rajendra Prasad is thoroughly investigating the entire incident. Further legal action will be taken after the investigation is complete.

BJP plans to boost Dalit, women representation in UP cabinet, org
Lucknow: Amid speculations of expansion of the Yogi cabinet and rejig in UP BJP organisation, the spotlight has come on Dalits and women, the two key electoral blocs that play a key role in determining the fate of parties.
The development is significant even as BJP plans to step up its social coalition to counter the PDA plank of the Samajwadi Party and its ally Congress in the run-up to this year’s panchayat elections and 2027 UP polls.
A senior BJP functionary said the party plans to elevate a Dalit face in the Yogi cabinet to mobilise the SC community.
The state cabinet currently has 9 Dalit ministers — 2 cabinet (Baby Rani Maurya and Anil Kumar), 2 state ministers with independent charge (Gulab Devi and Asim Arun), and 5 state ministers (Dinesh Khatik, Sanjiv Gond, Manohar Kori, Suresh Rahi and Vijay Laxmi Gautam).
Dalit ministers thus make up a little over 16% of the total strength of the council of ministers, comprising 54 members. This is relatively lower given the fact that SCs account for 21% of the UP population.
Sources said cabinet expansion—up to a limit of 60 ministers—may see weightage being given to Dalits.
The party think tank believes that the existing representation did not fully translate into political traction, particularly among non-Jatav Dalits and first-time voters, especially during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls when the BJP tally plunged from 62 to 33.
The talk of promoting a Dalit face, sources said, may not just be an addition, but also a possible upgrade in visibility, portfolio weight, or political positioning—a move designed to counter the SP’s attempt to mobilise the Dalit-OBC by heightening their grievances.
Likewise, BJP’s organisational unit in UP also contemplates playing a Dalit card to blunt the opposition’s increasing aggression vis-a-vis the narrative of social justice. The move will attain significance days after the BJP appointed Union minister and 7-time MP Pankaj Chaudhary, a Kurmi, as the new UP BJP chief.
Organisationally, 8 out of 45 members in the state unit are Dalit. This is a little over 17%, numerically, leaving room for induction of more Dalit faces.
Experts said unlike the cabinet, organisational changes have a deeper and long-lasting electoral impact.
More Dalit functionaries at the state level can improve the cadre-level messaging, booth management and grievance redressal, especially in the rural and semi-rural pockets where panchayat polls are due soon.
Focus on Dalits, sources said, will also be crucial during the appointment of party functionaries as members of boards and corporations, besides nomination as members in the municipal corporations.
Experts said the possibility of women also gaining the spotlight will serve the purpose of reinforcing the BJP’s governance narrative around welfare delivery (Ujjwala, PM Awas, Mission Shakti, etc.), which has widely resonated with women voters in recent elections.

The Bench of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vijay Bishnoi took on record multiple intervention applications, including one filed by the All India SC/ST Employees of the Railways opposing the plea. Muniswamy Pillai emphasized that reservation was meant to uplift those who were backward in social, educational, and economic terms and not those who had already overcome such disadvantages," the plea states. The writ petition filed through AOR Ashwani Kumar Dubey submits that the continued non-exclusion of the creamy layer has serious national consequences, as it fosters resentment between reserved and non-reserved categories and concentrates power and opportunity in the hands of a small elite section within SC/ST communities. "This weakens public faith in constitutional governance, threatens fraternity, and undermines administrative efficiency, which the Constitution expressly seeks to protect. Socially, the absence of creamy layer exclusion has resulted in internal stratification within SC/ST communities, creating a “class within a class.” Advanced families repeatedly corner reservation benefits, while the most backward and first-generation beneficiaries remain excluded. This perpetuates inequality within the reserved categories, deepens social stigma, and defeats the very purpose of social justice. Economically, reservation without creamy layer exclusion leads to misallocation of scarce public resources," it adds. The plea also relies on a recent Supreme Court judgment of State of Punjab v. Davinder Singh (2024), wherein a Constitution Bench authoritatively held that Scheduled Castes are not homogeneous and that sub-classification is constitutionally permissible to ensure equitable distribution of reservation benefits. Justice Pankaj Mithal in the said judgment observed that reservation must evolve, should ordinarily be confined to the first generation, and must be subject to periodic reassessment to exclude those who have already achieved parity.
