 Maharashtra: 

CM Devendra Fadnavis chaired a review at Vidhan Bhavan, Mumbai, on July 2-3. Directives: raise conviction rates under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, set up fast-track courts in high-incidence districts, mandate video recording of evidence, and hold bi-annual CM/DGP oversight meetings   

 • Tamil Nadu –

 Mayiladuthurai: Four arrests under the SC/ST Act in the Sathangudi case. Police say a 19-year-old, Parthiban, was found dead with a 16-year-old girl; Parthiban had earlier filed a harassment complaint linked to an inter-caste relationship. Four of five named accused are in custody, the girl's father is reported absconding. Tamil news pages Sun News Tamil carried the night-time escort photos on July 1, sparking heavy local comment about police response time   

 • Madhya Pradesh – Morena: A Dalit lawyer identified as Jatav was fatally assaulted by neighbours on July 2, after he killed a black cobra that had entered his home. The snake was worshipped locally. Family staged a road-block alleging police released the accused    • Gujarat – Kutch: July 2 report from Selari village, Rapar taluka: a witness in a two-year-old atrocity case was attacked with an iron rod after refusing to withdraw testimony. Case registered under the SC/ST Act at Bhuj   

 • Chhattisgarh: Assembly reply, March 12, 2026: 2,455 SC/ST Act cases registered Jan 2023 – Feb 2026, with 1,013 rape cases (about 41%), and 73 murders    • Odisha: Courts in anti-mining protest cases (Vedanta-linked bauxite project) imposed bail conditions requiring Adivasi/Dalit protesters to clean police station premises. Rights groups called it forced labour    Dalit & Adivasi rights • Sanitation workers: Dalit Adivasi Shakti Adhikar Manch (DASAM) reported 55+ sewer/septic tank worker deaths Feb–June 2026 across Surat, Bengaluru, Ludhiana, Faridabad, Delhi-Mundka, Lucknow. 1. Supreme Court – Dr. Anand Rai v. State of MP, 2026 INSC 141: SC/ST Act prosecutions require prima facie caste-based insult/intent and knowledge of the complainant's caste. Victim's caste alone is insufficient; BNSS has not changed the "grave suspicion" discharge test    

2. Calcutta High Court: quashed an SC/ST case where a land dispute was "given colour of atrocity to wreak vengeance", and separately held "not every insult to an SC/ST person is an atrocity" under the 1989 Act
