TN: Family abducts woman on highway for marrying Dalit man

M Chithiravalli belonged to the Most Backward Class (MBC) and Ajith Kumar belonged to the Scheduled Caste community.
Chennai: A woman in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruchirappalli was reportedly abducted by her family on Saturday, July 4, for marrying a Dalit man, with her kin assaulting her, hurling casteist slurs and giving death threats.
According to The Hindu, the woman was identified as 27-year-old M Chithiravalli. She was allegedly abducted on the Tiruchi-Dindigul national highway near Maravanur under Manapparai Police Station limits. A police team rescued her and subsequently arrested four people, including her elder brother, involved in the crime.
A resident of Mudukupatti, Chithiravalli married Ajith Kumar, 27, at a temple near Tiruchi in June. She belonged to the Most Backward Class (MBC) and Kumar belonged to the Scheduled Caste community.
Since her family strongly opposed the union due to the caste differences, both sides approached the Manapparai All Women Police Station.

Madhya Pradesh: No bridge, no ambulance! Woman gives birth on a cot in the middle of a raging river, video goes viral

In Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh, an ambulance was unable to reach due to a lack of roads and bridges. After this, villagers safely delivered a baby on a cot in the middle of a raging river. A video of the system’s negligence went viral.
Madhya Pradesh: A shocking and system-shattering incident has come to light in Chhindwara district. A pregnant woman was forced to give birth on a cot in the middle of a raging river due to the lack of an ambulance. Heavy rains cut off this area from the main road, and the villagers’ long-standing demand for a bridge has remained unheeded.
City and Local Guide
This horrific incident occurred in the Lohari Mohalla of Hathoda Hiri village in the Amarwara block. During the monsoon, the river, which overflows with rainwater, completely cuts off approximately 20 families living there. A video of the incident surfaced on Sunday, showing villagers carrying a pregnant woman on a cot across a swollen river. The video exposed the daily hardships faced by residents of the area.
According to family members, Shankar Vishwakarma’s 35-year-old wife, Savita Vishwakarma, suddenly experienced severe labor pains on Wednesday evening. Alarmed relatives immediately called the 108 ambulance service. However, due to the river’s overflowing waters and the lack of a proper road, the ambulance was unable to reach their neighborhood.
With no other way to help, the family and villagers were forced to place the woman on a cot and set out on foot to cross the river. While wading through the rapidly flowing water, Savita’s pain intensified, and she gave birth to the baby on the cot.
The villagers managed to reach the other side of the river with the mother and child, where they waited for an ambulance. But when no help arrived despite waiting for a long time, they gave up and resorted to a motorcycle. They were taken on the same motorcycle to Amarwada Civil Hospital, where doctors gave the reassuring news that both mother and newborn were completely healthy.
Geographical Context
The woman’s brother-in-law, Gopal Vishwakarma, expressed his anguish, explaining that their village is completely cut off every year during the monsoon. He said that his sister-in-law was in severe pain, and despite calling an ambulance, it could not reach them due to the river, forcing her to resort to a cot and deliver on the way.
Gopal leveled serious allegations against the administration, saying that the villagers have repeatedly appealed for a concrete bridge and road, but no one has listened. The same situation arises every year during the rainy season, and even schoolchildren have to risk their lives crossing the river daily. The villagers have filed written complaints with the District Panchayat, SDM, and public representatives, but no concrete action has been taken to date.
Regarding this entire incident, health officials at Amarwada Civil Hospital say they have no clear understanding of why the ambulance failed to arrive on time. A health official explained that the 108 ambulance service is operated directly from the Bhopal control room, but the good news is that both mother and child have reached the hospital and are safe.
This incident has once again exposed the ground reality of health services in remote areas of Madhya Pradesh. Even though the scope of emergency ambulance services has expanded in the state, poor roads and lack of infrastructure still pose a major obstacle to timely medical assistance in many villages. Following this incident, angry villagers have once again intensified their demand for a bridge and an all-weathuer paved road.

TN: Family abducts woman over marriage to Dalit man, husband attacked with casteist abuse

A woman was allegedly abducted by her family in Tamil Nadu for marrying a Dalit man, while her husband was assaulted with caste slurs before police rescued her and arrested four accused.
A 26-year-old woman was allegedly abducted by members of her family in Tamil Nadu's Tiruchirappalli district after marrying a Dalit man against their wishes, while the attackers allegedly assaulted her husband, hurled caste-based slurs at him and threatened to kill him.
Police rescued her within hours and arrested four people, including her relatives, in connection with the incident.
The woman, M. Chithiravalli, belongs to the Most Backward Class (MBC) community, while her husband, P. Ajith Kumar, belongs to the Scheduled Caste (SC) community.
The couple married on June 25 despite opposition from Chithiravalli's family after meeting while working at a plastic and household goods store in Manapparai owned by her brother-in-law, P. Murugesan.
Following their marriage, the couple approached the Manapparai All Women Police Station seeking protection. After conducting an inquiry with both families, the police allowed Chithiravalli to leave with Ajith Kumar after she stated that she wished to live with him.
On July 1, however, Murugesan filed a complaint alleging that Ajith Kumar had threatened him. Police summoned both parties for an inquiry on July 4. While Ajith Kumar, Chithiravalli and his mother appeared before the police, Murugesan did not.
After the inquiry, the couple and Ajith Kumar's mother left the police station in an autorickshaw. At around 1:40 p.m., near Maravanur on the Tiruchirappalli-Dindigul National Highway, their vehicle was allegedly intercepted by a group travelling in two cars.
According to police, the group assaulted Ajith Kumar, allegedly hurled caste-based slurs at him, threatened to kill him, and forcibly abducted Chithiravalli. Ajith Kumar and his mother attempted to stop them but were unsuccessful.
Based on Ajith Kumar's complaint, the Manapparai police registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Police later traced Chithiravalli to her grandmother's house in Yagapuram, where she was allegedly being confined by her family. She was rescued on Saturday night and reunited with her husband.
Four accused, Chithiravalli's brother, M. Malaisamy; her brother-in-law, P. Murugesan; Murugesan's brother, P. Prakash; and N. Amanullah alias Mala, has been arrested and remanded to judicial custody. Police also seized the two vehicles allegedly used in the abduction.
Investigators said Chithiravalli's family had allegedly been pressuring her to leave Ajith Kumar and had threatened him with consequences if she refused. Further investigation is underway.

Key accused involved in Dalit journalist assault in Villupuram yet to be arrested
VILLUPURAM: A Dalit woman reporter has allegedly been threatened by dominant caste members of the same village over past feuds, and her family members, including a pregnant woman, were physically assaulted at V Sithamur village near Villupuram on June 22.
The family has demanded immediate police action, claiming that the key accused have not yet been arrested even after two weeks following the alleged caste atrocity.
Police arrested the fourth accused, Kumar, last week.
The first encounter between the accused and S Priya (name changed) (27), a reporter at a private media channel in Villupuram, began in January 2023 after she named two suspects in her complaint about two bikes stolen from her house.
After an inquiry with the suspects, brothers E Ragu and E Anbu, the police learnt that the two were regularly involved in bike thefts and recovered 15 bikes and two tractors from them during the investigation.
However, Priya’s bikes were never found.
"After the brothers were released on bail, they threatened Priya for accusing them," said Priya’s mother (58).
Three years later, on June 22 this year, Anbu and a private insurance agent were allegedly getting into a scuffle in front of a petty shop outside the house owned by Priya’s family.
Her brother, S Sanju (31), who was at the shop then, asked the two to move and not engage in a fight near the shop as it might affect business.
Sanju told TNIE that Anbu had left the place, but returned later with Ragu and other friends. The gang allegedly began using casteist slurs against Sanju and physically assaulted him.
“My wife, my brother’s wife, and my mother got out of the house hearing the commotion and tried to defend me. While continuously hurling caste slurs and abusive words against the women, the men physically assaulted me. Ragu purposefully hit my wife with slippers thrice and pushed her away. She is four months pregnant. They also manhandled my mother and her saree tore off,” Sanju told TNIE.The entire incident was recorded by the CCTV camera placed at Sanju’s house. During the incident, the men allegedly warned the family that they would attack her when she leaves home to work, for filing a complaint against dominant caste members.
Priya, Sanju, and his wife filed a complaint with the Arakandanallur police on June 23.
Following this, Ragu, Anbu and two others were booked under SC ST PoA Act, the TN Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act, and the BNS.
Police are yet to arrest Ragu, Anbu and one more accused. Police officers from the station told TNIE that the accused duo’s location was identified in Bengaluru, Karnataka, but they are struggling to trace their exact location.
“Despite the video evidence of the incident, the police are not arresting the culprits. My sister-in-law is going through huge distress in her second trimester; we are helpless. Meanwhile, the men had also warned my family that they would attack me. But I continue to do my work beyond the fears of these casteist men,” said Priya.
Speaking to TNIE, human rights activist V Lalitha, who is currently providing legal aid to the family, accused the police station of repeatedly mishandling caste atrocity cases under their limit over the last few years.
“Vadakaraithalanur, Vasantha Krishnapuram, Veerapandi Pulikkal, and Kadakanur are villages under the police station where atrocities, including mass violence and murder against Dalits, happened in the last decade.
But none of the cases saw a conviction in court due to the inefficiency of the police officers here.
The same is repeated in Priya’s case too.
"As part of my organisation, we urge the police to arrest the two prime accused soon, as per the SC/ST PoA Act mandate,” Lalitha said.
Lalitha also claimed that the delay in arrest and reasons like “unable to trace them” were excuses that gave rise to suspicion on the cops for colluding with the culprits, as the officers allegedly tried to favour majority-dominant-caste people in the village.
